Officer Brandon James had been the head of Oakwood's gang commission for a relatively short time. In that time, however, he had made great strides against the five gangs in the city. The one thing that Officer James could not put his finger on was the tall red headed kid that had just appeared without warning. "The Red Headed Stranger" as they called him was part of the reason he had had so much early success. The kid would show up at gang activity, bring it to a peaceful resolution, then disappear, just as fast as he had shown up. Things were going well. Officer James had met a lovely nurse named April who was also looking for the red headed kid, but for different reasons. They both were single parents with teenagers. All was going well until someone put a million dollar bounty on the family of Officer James. "Oh my God!" exclaimed the Chief, not hiding the emotion that was welling up in his eyes. The camera panned to the front of the damaged building. The scene showed two firemen with yellow oxygen tanks on their backs and fully covered with protective gear and masks. They were carrying a small, black body bag suspended between them. They placed the bag on the ground. Officer James came running hysterically into camera range shouting, "Michael! Tommy!" He threw his arms around the bag and began sobbing uncontrollably. The cameramen, in their disregard for human suffering, panned in on the distressed officer for a close-up. The boys watching the scene on television were in shock. Who had killed the children of Officer James? Who was the red headed kid, and why was he there? What is Positive Force and how will it overcome all this negative action?

There was a time when rural comedians drew most of their humor from tales of farmers' daughters, hogs, hens, and hill country high jinks. Lum and Abner and Ma and Pa Kettle might not have toured happily under the "Redneck" marquee, but they were its precursors. In Ain't That a Knee-Slapper: Rural Comedy in the Twentieth Century, author Tim Hollis traces the evolution of this classic American form of humor in the mass media, beginning with the golden age of radio, when such comedians as Bob Burns, Judy Canova, and Lum and Abner kept listeners laughing. The book then moves into the motion pictures of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, when the established radio stars enjoyed second careers on the silver screen and were joined by live-action renditions of the comic strip characters Li'l Abner and Snuffy Smith, along with the much-loved Ma and Pa Kettle series of films. Hollis explores such rural sitcoms as The Real McCoys in the late 1950s and from the 1960s, The Andy Griffith Show, The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Hee Haw, and many others. Along the way, readers are taken on side trips into the world of animated cartoons and television commercials that succeeded through a distinctly rural sense of fun. While rural comedy fell out of vogue and networks sacked shows in the early 1970s, the emergence of such hits as The Dukes of Hazzard brought the genre whooping back to the mainstream. Hollis concludes with a brief look at the current state of rural humor, which manifests itself in a more suburban, redneck brand of standup comedy.

In this memoir about overcoming adversity in America, the U. S. Senator responsible for creating "opportunity zones" explains how hard work and community growth can drive businesses and end poverty. Senator Tim Scott knows adversity. As the son of a single mother from North Charleston, South Carolina, he struggled to get through school and had his dreams of a college football career shattered by a car wreck. But thanks to his mother and a few mentors along the way, he learned that "failure isn't failure unless you quit." He also learned that it's hard work and perseverance, not a government handout, that will get you ahead in life. Today, Senator Scott is the only black Republican in the Senate, and he believes that investment and commerce are the best ways to rebuild our most impoverished communities. This is the idea behind his signature piece of legislation, the "opportunity zones" program, which President Trump has strongly endorsed. The program provides tax incentives for businesses that invest in low-income urban areas, seeking to replace things like welfare and government assistance. In Opportunity Knocks, Senator Scott will tell his life story with a focus on adversity and opportunity. He will teach readers about the principles of hard work and hope while addressing the dangers of veering too far toward socialist policies. The book will also not shy away from discussions of racism and racial inequality in the United States and will recount some of Senator Scott's own brushes with racism as well as the many discussions he's had with people who want to help, including President Trump.
