This second Lent resource from the author of The Naturalist and the Christ explores Christian understandings of “salvation” in a five-part study course based on the film The Way. Starring Martin Sheen as a bereaved father, this soulful and uplifting film observes a group of pilgrims walking the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela. As it follows their journey of inner transformation, the course examines biblical accounts and images of salvation – past, present and future – and addresses the questions: What are we saved from? What are we saved for? Who can be saved? What do we have to do to be saved? How are we saved? ,
This is a fan's nostalgic reminder of the great (and some not-so-great) moments in the last 50 years of Cleveland Indians baseball. From the 1948 World Championship through some laughably bad seasons in the 1970s and 1980s to the championship seasons of the mid-1990s, this roller-coaster collection celebrates the top 350 highlights. Just mention a couple of them to any Indians fan and you'll see the reaction: The Trade. Ten-Cent Beer Night. Len Barker's perfect game. Albert Belle's corked bat. The memories roll on ...
Soldier Chief, no Lakota braveheart forgets where he buries hatchet," said White Bull, a Cheshire-cat grin across his face. General Edward S. Godfrey (K Co., 7th Cavalry, Ret.) at the Little Bighorn Battle's 50th anniversary responds with surprise. A picture captures this moment at the burial of an unknown 7th Cavalry trooper- Bury the Hatchet Celebration-June 25, 1926. Horse-backed, Godfrey and Sitting Bull's nephew, White Bull, shake hands reaching across the open Tomb of the Unknown Soldier near the battlefield. White Bull sneers. As Godfrey stares into the marble coffin, his face is in shock. Godfrey relives unspeakable horror of yesteryears' fighting. Out of context with the crowd's gaiety celebrating the grand occasion, Godfrey gasps seeing the headless corpse. "We head-chopped thirty pony soldiers. We turned heads to face dancing-fire's heat, "goaded White Bull, gesturing to his neck with a cutting motion. Godfrey reached for a pistol no longer there. Remember the announcer's voice over the William Tell overture when the Lone Ranger TV show started? "Come with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear!" It's about Crazy Horse, tragic hero, real person - his foibles, his invincibility and incomparable hand-to-eye coordination. Readers meet his friends and adversaries who plotted his murder. Custer needed victory to become president. Lakota Headhunters is a novella, of the 5-book Talking Leaves series: The Crazy Horse Conspiracies. Taken together, these stories recreate the full-bodied character of Crazy Horse-where he stood, what he felt, and what he did-caught up as he was with intrigue, lust, betrayal, rage, and close-quarters-fighting against the U.S. Army. This is a character study long sought by avid Western history readers-a worldwide audience. It belongs in the library of those who must have every book on the subject of Crazy Horse's role in the American Plains Indian wars. Lakota Headhunters is a race to hide Crazy Horse's corpse. 'Crazy Horse'-the very words invoke mystical intakes of breath, while Custer stands as the epitome of America's Western legend. The story line collides their myths-these warriors breathe again in full dramatic life as living human beings. This is a fictional history thriller which readers will want to believe is true, and it could be. No one truly knows how Custer died; save for secret Crow sect Curley confided in.The Crazy Horse People to this day do not "connect" with Red Cloud's followers. These Hunkpatila Oglala descendants of "nontreaty" Lakota-Sioux do not live at Pine River Reservation. If you get them to talk, Red Cloud and Spotted Tail are not heroes. Who killed Crazy Horse? A conspiracy continues even today to keep the story hidden from paleface Wasicus. Red Cloud's Oglala and Spotted Tail's Brule tribesmen want what happened kept secret. This story breeds contentious debate-it breeds antagonizing notoriety depicting Red Cloud, Spotted Tail, and the Army's agents in a conspiracy that killed Crazy Horse. These books are controversial, presenting never-before-described conspiracies regarding Crazy Horse's murder and killing Custer-America's beloved "Boy General." I've walked campsites and battlefields, interviewed Crow and Lakota tribal historians, studied historic facts in museums and libraries as well as found Crazy Horse's Quest Site-near where his body's buried. These books provide new perceptions delving into historical figures' human side. Holding true to known facts-in-evidence, these books reach beyond, interpreting where people walked, what they felt, why they acted the way they did. Crazy Horse. Custer. Little Bighorn. They interconnect myth, legend, and emotion as no other story line in American history-a sad tale of the destruction of the Lakota horse culture, Custer's "Luck" and Crazy Horse's "invincibility.

This book outlines the creative process of making environmental management decisions using the approach called Structured Decision Making. It is a short introductory guide to this popular form of decision making and is aimed at environmental managers and scientists. This is a distinctly pragmatic label given to ways for helping individuals and groups think through tough multidimensional choices characterized by uncertain science, diverse stakeholders, and difficult tradeoffs. This is the everyday reality of environmental management, yet many important decisions currently are made on an ad hoc basis that lacks a solid value-based foundation, ignores key information, and results in selection of an inferior alternative. Making progress – in a way that is rigorous, inclusive, defensible and transparent – requires combining analytical methods drawn from the decision sciences and applied ecology with deliberative insights from cognitive psychology, facilitation and negotiation. The authors review key methods and discuss case-study examples based in their experiences in communities, boardrooms, and stakeholder meetings. The goal of this book is to lay out a compelling guide that will change how you think about making environmental decisions. With the ever-increasing impacts of climate change, it is now clear that global society will have to restructure its energy systems in order to decrease carbon emissions. The scenarios under which this transition to low-carbon societies (LCS) could occur would have complex economic, technological, behavioural and policy implications. This volume, a supplement to the Climate Policy journal, considers these implications by examining different low-carbon scenarios for different countries, modelled at different scales and typologies. Two overview chapters, co-written by international experts, set the context of scenario development and quantification of LCS, and summarize the findings on the economic implications, societal responses, technological developments and required policy measures to enable LCS across a range of countries. Further chapters detail the modelling of various scenarios and outline the model methodology, detail the economic and technological consequences of transitions to LCS, and comment on the strengths and weaknesses of specific policies.
“A tender-hearted novel and a dream to read. I loved this book.” -- Matt Haig #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Midnight Library “so so so so good…[Speech Team] is a MUST…It has all the feels and brilliant writing to boot.” -- Elin Hilderband (on Instagram) #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Five Star Weekend A funny, gossipy and ultimately poignant novel about four Gen X teen friends turned 21st-century adults who awkwardly come back together to confront an influential teacher whose brutal remarks have haunted them all for years. In his early forties, nonprofit writer Tip Murray is just getting past the wreckage of his youth and settling into semi-humdrum married New England domesticity. Things take an unusual turn when he receives shocking news from his high school best friend, hippie farmer Natalie, that one of their former teammates from speech team, Pete, has committed suicide. Surprisingly mentioned in Pete’s final Facebook post? A devastating comment made to him by their speech team coach, Gary Gold. Feeling nostalgic for their 80s adolescence, Tip and Nat decide to reconnect with two long lost friends from the team, haughty menswear designer Anthony and tightly wound college professor Jennifer. The reunited quartet quickly discover an unsettling thread: all were quietly wounded by Mr. Gold’s deeply cutting remarks. The silver lining? Gold is still alive, and a quick Google search shows that he has retired to Florida. There’s only one thing left to do: fly down to a posh resort to confront him. What happens next is far from what any of them could have imagined. Fueled by cringe-y confrontations and 80s nostalgia, a literary mashup of The Breakfast Club and The Big Chill, Speech Team explores what it means to take account of the pain that can suffuse a life and what it means, years on, to move forward. "Tim Murphy is a genius at sweeping, character-driven stories that suck you in until the very last page, and Speech Team is no exception." —Andy Cohen

Eamon de Valera – 'The Long Fellow' – remains a towering presence whose shadow still falls over Irish life. The history of Ireland for much of the twentieth century is the history of de Valera. From the 1916 Rising, the troubled Treaty negotiations and the Civil War, right through to his retirement after a longer period in power than any other 20th-century leader, Eamon de Valera has both defined and divided Ireland. He was directly responsible for the Irish Constitution, Fianna Fail (the largest Irish political party) and the Irish Press Group. He helped create a political church-state monolith with continuing implications for Northern Ireland, the social role of women, the Irish language and the whole concept of an Irish nation. Many of the challenges he confronted are still troubling the peace of Ireland and of Britain, and some of the problems are his legacy. Tim Pat Coogan's comprehensive study of this political giant is a major addition to the history of Irish-British relationships.
