A philandering president. Rumors about The First Lady. Public lies about private lives. Talk about impeachment. Unstable world events that could lead to war. 1941. Soon after Franklin Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term and before the US entered World War II, the Betz Radio Network aired scandalous and previously unreported stories about the First Family. Michael Audray, the network's high-profile host of the most listened-to radio program in the country, asked the question that set off a chain of events that changed modern history before and after Pearl Harbor. The Affairs of State is about power politics, broadcasting, private lives and the public's right to know. History and fiction combine to question what is the greater good and to illuminate its moral ambiguity. TIM STEELE Tim Steele draws on his broadcasting and political experience for this, his first novel. He lives in Michigan. For more information, visit www.timsteele.net
A highly readable Poyser monograph on one of the most widespread raptors. The Osprey is a large, fish-eating bird of prey. Distinctively marked in deep brown and white, with a piercing yellow eye and powerful hooked bill, the Osprey snatches its prey in spectacular swoops above lakes and wetlands around the world it is one of the most widespread of all birds. Persecuted mercilessly in Britain, it became extinct in the 1890s before returning to the famous Loch Garten in Scotland in the 1950s. The return of the bird has been slow, but reintroduction programmes elsewhere notably at Rutland Water have been successful, and this remarkable raptor is an increasingly common sight in our skies. This Poyser monograph is dedicated to this fine species and includes more than 150 colour photographs. The Osprey looks at the distribution, foraging ecology, migration, breeding behaviour and population dynamics of this spectacular bird, with emphasis placed on conservation efforts both in Britain and in the species' African haunts, which have been discovered only very recently thanks to advances in satellite tagging technology.

The minstrel show occupies a complex and controversial space in the history of American popular culture. Today considered a shameful relic of America's racist past, it nonetheless offered many black performers of the 19th and early 20th centuries their only opportunity to succeed in a white-dominated entertainment world, where white performers in blackface had by the 1830s established minstrelsy as an enduringly popular national art form. This book traces the often overlooked history of the "modern" minstrel show through the advent of 20th century mass media--when stars like Al Jolson, Bing Crosby and Mickey Rooney continued a long tradition of affecting black music, dance and theatrical styles for mainly white audiences--to its abrupt end in the 1950s. A companion two-CD reissue of recordings discussed in the book is available from Archeophone Records at www.archeophone.com.

Birmingham, Alabama, has enjoyed a long and distinguished broadcasting history. The citys first radio station aired in 1922, and television arrived in 1949. Both media produced personalities who became household names in the city. Audiences came to know Joe Rumore, Tommy Charles, Country Boy Eddy, Cousin Cliff Holman, Rosemary, Pat Gray, Tom York, and many others as if they were members of their own families. Even the commercials became as memorable as the news, entertainment, talk, and childrens shows they interrupted.
Dr. Samuel Allen was at the epicenter of the American Civil War, Missouri. As a slave-owning native Virginian that lived in the shadows of pro-Union Columbia and a Union occupied Jefferson City, he was challenged at every turn with the new state of affairs after the outbreak of the Civil War. His southern Boone County home in a township, country and state was split on the issue of slavery. An old veteran's simple suggestion caused this respected doctor to end up imprisoned. This is the saga of his life, imprisonment and release in southern Boone County Missouri. Dr. Allen found himself not only in a situation of local complications, but one of national implications. President Lincoln wanted to rejoin the Union and pushed for a policy that benefited Dr. Allen. The intervention of a Congressman and this new policy returned Dr. Allen to his home and practice.
The first six months of the war in Afghanistan were incredibly confused. Few journalists or civilians had access to the main events and the result was the creation of many urban myths that persist to this day. This book reveals the truth behind Operation Enduring Freedom, its objectives, successes, failures and consequences. Tim Ripley has discovered what actually happened in the first six months of this US-led intervention. He reveals the clandestine US and UK reconnaissance efforts before hostilities commenced on 7 October 2001, secret US UAV and drone operations, RAF Canberra and U-2 spy flights and details of initial combat between Taliban and Northern Alliance ground forces. This is a definitive account of the first six months of the military campaign in Afghanistan that saw the initial air and special drive to unseat the Taliban regime, the launching of search and destroy operations to hunt down Osama bin Ladens Al Qaeda organization and the setting up of President Hamid Karzais government in Kabul. These events were the catalyst for the subsequent and continuing war in that far-off troubled land.
Bruce Boudreau is living a hockey Cinderella story. After more than three decades in the minor leagues as a player and coach, he was promoted to head coach of the Washington Capitals in 2007. Boudreau revived the Caps, written off as dead, to a division championship and received the Jack Adams award as the National Hockey League s Coach of the Year in June 2008. His story is an entertaining odyssey of triumph, disappointment, and perseverance, stretching from Toronto to Washington. Today Boudreau coaches superstar Alexander Ovechkin and a young Washington club poised to become an elite NHL team vying for the Stanley Cup. Boudreau stole the limelight at the 2008 NHL Awards Show with his self-deprecating and folksy manner, which has made him a popular personality at every stop he s made. Hockey fans know there s only one Boudreau.

The central phenomenon of this book are embedded lead users (ELUs): employees of firms who experience emerging needs and profit from solutions to these needs (i.e. who exhibit lead user characteristics) in relation to one or more of their employing firm’s products or services. In three subsequent studies I explore, how embedded lead users contribute to corporate innovation. I show which factors foster the lead userness of employees and what characterizes embedded lead users’ behaviors. This holds various implications for firms, e.g. with respect to the integration of user knowledge for innovation.

The conflicts in the South Caucasus are now a decade old, but still appear impervious to solution. The hopes that independence raised have been dashed by an insidious cocktail of past and present regional hegemony, historical antipathy and Soviet planning. Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia, thus, continue to wait for their long awaited Spring. In a region where Western academic writing has focussed, during the last decade, almost exclusively on the dynamics of regional security and Great Power rivalry, even in the context of conflict, this volume provides an important and necessary legal appraisal of the possible processes and structures which may, ultimately, facilitate the finding of constitutional settlement in Nagorno-Karabakh, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. In the work, Tim Potier, an academic lawyer with much experience in the Caucasus, has written a powerful but dispassionate account which will prove not only to be of use to academics, diplomats and government officials working in the region, but also be of lasting value to the ongoing development of the international law on self-determination and autonomy. Dr Potier also considers the fate of what he prefers to term, `regionally non-dominant titular peoples'.

The topic of social deviance is inherently intriguing. People in general, and college students in particular, find the topic of deviant behavior fascinating. This can be explained, at least in part, by a combination of the subject matter itself, our own past deviant behaviors, and our willingness and desire to evaluate and comment on the behaviors of others. While the topic of deviant behavior seems straightforward at the surface, the study of social deviance reveals how complicated it really is. Although Social Deviance utilizes a textbook-style approach in its coverage of deviant behavior, this comprehensive, straightforward, and student-friendly book maintains student interest because of the author's use of real life phenomena and current examples. Each chapter includes chapter objectives, an introductory story, a glossary of key terms, discussion questions, and boxed material. The boxed materials include "A Closer Look" box that zooms in on topics that warrant deeper explanation; and a "Connecting Social Deviance and Popular Culture" box that shows how contemporary forms of popular culture illustrate deviant behavior.
