The Objects of Thought addresses the ancient question of how it is possible to think about what does not exist. Tim Crane argues that the representation of the non-existent is a pervasive feature of our thought about the world, and that we will not adequately understand thought's representational power ('intentionality') unless we have understood the representation of the non-existent. Intentionality is conceived by Crane in terms of the direction of the mind upon an object of thought, or an intentional object. Intentional objects are what we think about. Some intentional objects exist and some do not. Non-existence poses a problem because there seem to be truths about non-existent intentional objects, but truths are answerable to reality, and reality contains only what exists. The proposed solution is to accept that there are some genuine truths about non-existent intentional objects, but to hold that they must be reductively explained in terms of truths about what does exist. The Objects of Thought offers both an original account of the nature of intentionality and a solution to the problem of thought about the non-existent.

The land comprising the village of Morton Grove holds stories of American Indian villages, European settlement, and diverse ethnic groups. Following the Treaty of Chicago in 1833, early settlers utilized energy generated by damming the river to power Miller's Mill and harvested timber from the rich woodlands. Fertile prairie soils attracted truck farmers in the 1840s, and the floral industry boomed once tracks were laid for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway Company in 1872. This whistle stop was named for Levi Parsons Morton, an official of the railroad and vice president of the United States from 1889 to 1893 under Benjamin Harrison. Morton Grove became well known for its pickle companies, prize-winning roses, airfields, and roadhouses.

Irvin R. Athearn was a pioneer in model trains beginning in the late 1940s. He started in his garage putting together O Gauge metal car kits then expanded them to include HO Scale kits. Around the mid-1950s, as a result of the purchase of Globe models, he began producing the iconic F-7 A and B Units in molded plastic. Soon after that came a whole line of plastic freight cars and locomotives. Our first book, The Standard Guide to Athearn Model Trains, documented the production of those models from the beginning of the plastic models through 1997. The Athearn Collector's Companion covers the original Guide, including models discovered since publication that book, plus all the kits produced until the end of production in October 2009.
