This book contains recent results about the global dynamics defined by a class of delay differential equations which model basic feedback mechanisms and arise in a variety of applications such as neural networks. The authors describe in detail the geometric structure of a fundamental invariant set, which in special cases is the global attractor, and the asymptotic behavior of solution curves on it. The approach makes use of advanced tools which in recent years have been developed for the investigation of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems: local invariant manifolds and inclination lemmas for noninvertible maps, Floquet theory for delay differential equations, a priori estimates controlling the growth and decay of solutions with prescribed oscillation frequency, a discrete Lyapunov functional counting zeros, methods to represent invariant sets as graphs, and Poincaré-Bendixson techniques for classes of delay differential systems. Several appendices provide the general results needed in the case study, so the presentation is self-contained. Some of the general results are not available elsewhere, specifically on smooth infinite-dimensional centre-stable manifolds for maps. Results in the appendices will be useful for future studies of more complicated attractors of delay and partial differential equations.

The present book is a monograph including some recent results of mea sure and integration theory. It concerns three main ideas. The first idea deals with some ordering structures such as Riesz spaces and lattice or dered groups, and their relation to measure and integration theory. The second is the idea of fuzzy sets, quite new in general, and in measure theory particularly. The third area concerns some models of quantum mechanical systems. We study mainly models based on fuzzy set theory. Some recent results are systematically presented along with our suggestions for further development. The first chapter has an introductory character, where we present basic definitions and notations. Simultaneously, this chapter can be regarded as an elementary introduction to fuzzy set theory. Chapter 2 contains an original approach to the convergence of sequences of measurable functions. While the notion of a null set can be determined uniquely, the notion of a set of "small" measure has a fuzzy character. It is interesting that the notion of fuzzy set and the notion of a set of small measure (described mathematically by so-called small systems) were introduced independently at almost the same time. Although the axiomatic systems in both theories mentioned are quite different, we show that the notion of a small system can be considered from the point of view of fuzzy sets.
Three generations of a family of lawyers have run a firm founded in 1893 in the small city of Becskerek (today in Serbian Zrenjanin), first part of the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg monarchy, then Hungary, then Yugoslavia, then for a while under German occupation, then again part of Yugoslavia and finally Serbia. In the Banat district of the province of Vojvodina, the multiplicity of languages and religions and changes of place-names was a matter of course. What is practically unprecedented, all files, folders and documents of the law office have survived. They concern marriages, divorces, births and testaments, as well as expulsions, emigrations, incarcerations and releases of these largely rural and small-town dwellers. Mundane cases reflect times through war, peace, revolution and counter-revolution, through serfdom and freedom, through comfort and poverty. The files also show everyday lives shaped in spite of history. Tibor Várady transforms them into affecting and vivid vignettes, selecting and commenting without sentimentality but with empathy. The law office of the three generations of the Várady family demonstrates that the legal profession permits and in difficult times even requires its members to defend the ordinary men and women against the powers of state and society.

This is a social history of refugees escaping Hungary after the Bolshevik-type revolution of 1919, the ensuing counterrevolution, and the rise of anti-Semitism. Largely Jewish and German before World War I, the Hungarian middle class was torn by the disastrous war, the partitioning of Hungary in the Treaty of Trianon, and the numerus clausus act XXV in 1920 that seriously curtailed the number of Jews admitted to higher education. Hungary's outstanding future professionals, whether Jewish, Liberal or Socialist, felt compelled to leave the country and head to German-speaking universities in Austria, Czechoslovakia, and Germany. When Hitler came to power, these exiles were to flee again, many on the fringes of the huge German emigration. Emotionally prepared by their earlier threatening experiences in Hungary, they were quick to recognize the need to uproot themselves again. Many fled to the United States where their double exile catalyzed the USA into an active enemy of Nazi Germany and stimulated the transplantation of European modernism into American art and music. To their surprise, the refugees also encountered anti-Semitism in the USA. The book is based on extensive archival work in the USA and Germany.
