Land use and land-use change (including related policies) interact with climate and climate change (including related policies) in multiple ways. Land-use sectors are among the most affected by climate change. They are also a significant source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, agriculture, forestry and other land use are the second source of GHG emissions after fossil fuel use and account globally for about 23 percent of total net anthropogenic GHG emissions. However, the land use sectors are not only part of the problem, but also part of the solution. They are key to adaptation. The global potential of land-based mitigation options is evaluated at about 30 percent of the global mitigation effort required in 2050 to meet the 1.5 °C target of the Paris Agreement. This publication, resulting from a collaboration between FAO and the Center for International Forestry Research, lead centre of the CGIAR research programme on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry, aims to recall those complex interactions and to explore the opportunities to enhance the role of land use under theUnited Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to advance climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Major polls all report that "trust in government is at an all-time low" in the United States. At the same time, polarization is at an all-time high. Hetheringon and Rudolph's timely book demonstrates a direct link between polarization and the decline of political trust in America. Drawing on a cornucopia of evidence and data, the authors show that since the early 2000s polarization in the electorate has increasingly been rooted not in ideological or policy differences, but, for the first time, in extremely negative feelings toward the other party. As the authors persuasively explain, this is no longer occurring. Far from being a long-term and relatively stable psychological trait, political trust is highly variable and contingent. Whether or not one trusts government will vary depending on whether one's party is in control, what part of government one is referring to, and what policies or events are most salient. Political trust increases, for example, when the public identifies international issues as most important (as during the 1950s and 60s). They also find that the effects of economic performance on political trust are asymmetric: weak economies harm trust more than strong economies help it. Ultimately, Hetherington and Rudolph have to conclude that it is unlikely political trust will ever to return to 1960s levels (a high point in the US) for any length of time unless international concerns again dominate politics and, just as important, the economy becomes consistently strong.

This book is based on lecture notes of a seminar of the Deutsche Mathematiker Vereinigung held by the authors at Oberwolfach from April 2 to 8, 1995. It gives an introduction to the classification theory and geometry of higher dimensional complex-algebraic varieties, focusing on the tremendeous developments of the sub ject in the last 20 years. The work is in two parts, with each one preceeded by an introduction describing its contents in detail. Here, it will suffice to simply ex plain how the subject matter has been divided. Cum grano salis one might say that Part 1 (Miyaoka) is more concerned with the algebraic methods and Part 2 (Peternell) with the more analytic aspects though they have unavoidable overlaps because there is no clearcut distinction between the two methods. This thesis provides a comprehensive description of methods used to compute the vibrational spectra of liquid systems by molecular dynamics simulations. The author systematically introduces theoretical basics and discusses the implications of approximating the atomic nuclei as classical particles. The strengths of the methodology are demonstrated through several different examples. Of particular interest are ionic liquids, since their properties are governed by strong and diverse intermolecular interactions in the liquid state. As a novel contribution to the field, the author presents an alternative route toward infrared and Raman intensities on the basis of a Voronoi tessellation of the electron density. This technique is superior to existing approaches regarding the computational resources needed. Moreover, this book presents an innovative approach to obtaining the magnetic moments and vibrational circular dichroism spectra of liquids, and demonstrates its excellent agreement with experimental reference data.
