While chronicling the development of Teer's National Black Theatre of Harlem, this study explores the National Black Theatre's quest to develop a new black theory of acting. Teer's theory of performance was realized in a theater that combined elements of Pentacostal worship and African ritual, melding spontaneity from the performers, percussive music, singing, dancing, emotional expression from both actors and audience, and spectacle. The National Black Theatre's major achievement is the creation of an original art form that helps African Americans identify with their roots and invites spontaneous audience interaction. The study offers the National Black Theatre as a model African American community theater with valuable lessons for other theaters. This book is a personal account of a research professor of entomology based at University of CaliforniaRiverside who used a background in physics and electronics to first solve research problems in insect physiology and toxicology. He then applied the same background to addressing insect pest problems in cotton in California and Arizona. The narrative also describes personal interactionsmost good, a few nasty. Choosing very difficult problems to solve and using the newest tools available had the effect of attracting some of the top graduate students and postdoctorals in the world. Sometimes a visiting researcher would bring a new problem with them. Achieving breakthroughs in a number of difference disciplines sometimes created jealousies in workers who did not see the competition coming and resented it. The text also gives some idea what research in a university is like, especially in an applied field like entomology. Although based primarily in Riverside, California, both the narrative and subject are global and reflect the authors perspective.

The beginning of the Neolithic in Britain is a topic of perennial interest in archaeology, marking the end of a hunter-gatherer way of life with the introduction of domesticated plants and animals, pottery, polished stone tools, and a range of new kinds of monuments, including earthen long barrows and megalithic tombs. Every year, numerous new articles are published on different aspects of the topic, ranging from diet and subsistence economy to population movement, architecture, and seafaring. Thomas offers a treatment that synthesizes all of this material, presenting a coherent argument to explain the process of transition between the Mesolithic-Neolithic periods. Necessarily, the developments in Britain are put into the context of broader debates about the origins of agriculture in Europe, and the diversity of processes of change in different parts of the continent are explored.
