This pioneering work brings the pre-Columbian and colonial history of Latin America home: rather than starting out in Spain and following Columbus and the conquistadores as they “discover” New World peoples, The Formation of Latin American Nations begins with the Mesoamerican and South American nations as they were before the advent of European colonialism—and only then moves on to the sixteenth-century Spanish arrival and its impact. To form a clearer picture of precolonial Latin America, Thomas Ward reads between the lines in the “Chronicles of the Indies,” filling in the blanks with information derived from archaeology, anthropology, genetics, and common-sense logic. Although he finds fascinating points of comparison among the K’iche’ Maya in Central America, the polities (señoríos) of Colombia, and the Chimú of the northern Peruvian coast, Ward focuses on two of the best-known peoples: the Nahua (Aztec) of Central Mexico and the Inka of the Andes. His study privileges indigenous-identified authors such as Diego Muñoz Camargo, Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, and Felipe Guaman Poma de Ayala while it also consults Spanish chroniclers like Hernán Cortés, Bernal Diaz del Castillo, Pedro Cieza de León, and Bartolomé de las Casas. The nation-forming processes that Ward theorizes feature two forms of cultural appropriation: the horizontal, in which nations appropriate people and customs from adjacent cultures, and the vertical, in which nations dig into their own past to fortify their concept of exceptionality. In defining these processes, Ward eschews the most common measure, race, instead opting for the Nahua altepetl, the Inka panaka, and the K’iche’ amaq’. His work thus approaches the nation both as the indigenous people conceptualized it and with terminology that would have been familiar to them before and after contact with the Spanish. The result is a truly decolonial account of the formation and organization of Latin American nations, one that puts the indigenous perspective at its center.

Scientific reserach implies progress. Sometimes, however, progress merely consists of a step back to the past, as in the case of the dating of the Prochiron, one of the Byzantine law books dealt with in this study. Recently, progress seemed to imply that the Prochiron had been issued by Leo the Wise in the year 907. This book sets out to show that the Prochiron was promulgated by Basil the Macedonian in the years 870-879, thus confirming the view of Karl Eduard Zachariä von Lingenthal, one of the first scholars who paved a way in the ‘ungodly jumble’ of Byzantine law books. Of course, the present study does not exclusively deal with the dating of law books: their status appeared to be inextricably bound up with their dating. Moreover, recent research has come up with results that shed new light on the Basilica and the Novels of Leo the Wise. Reason enough to investigate Leo’s legislative intentions..... To date and not to date, that is the issue in the realm of Byzantine legal history.

By the time of the unexpected military coup of 1967, the state and society of Greece had reached a specious political stability, one imposed under the tutelage of the right, the increasingly reactionary monarchy, and the American hegemony as expressed by the U.S. Embassy and the Pentagon. They dominated the armed forces and the Western-oriented elite, which agreed to the suppression of dissent from the marginalized and persecuted left. Although The Iron Strom appears to concentrate on the shocked and overwhelmed intelligentsia as it launched its counterattack with dissident publications, it is more accurately a large-scale study of Greek literary culture from the time of the Nazi Occupation, the Civil War (the final manifestation of the Greco-Greek War) unresolved since the founding of the state and the decades-long post war era. Since the Greek nation was part of the European community and NATO, the Greeks assumed that these provided them with rights and privileges that could not easily be negated and ignored. But it was the Junta, brutal toward the elite as well as the left, that showed them how meaningless these were and provided them with insights into how they should go about viewing their role as a vassal state and achieve a true stability.

Rowland is one of the most well-respected pediatric cardiologists in the United States. He has authored three other books and more than 150 journal articles and has served in several key national leadership positions in pediatric medicine. In Biologic Regulation of Physical Activity, Rowland uses his expertise, along with numerous references and direct quotes from expert witnesses, to provide a detailed account of how current research may support the existence of a biologic regulator—a mechanism in the brain that involuntarily controls biological processes—associated with physical activity. Rowland proposes a possible mechanism for such a control and explores the implications of this theory. This developing area of research and theory offers a new lens through which health professionals and those who research issues related to obesity, physical activity adherence, and sedentary behaviors can view their work. The book moves methodically through the research, rationale, and implications of a biologic regulator of physical activity. In part I, Surveying the Evidence, readers are guided through a litany of research—both on humans and on animals—that provides support for the existence of a biologic regulator. This section synthesizes evidence from an interdisciplinary perspective, covering research on topics such as behavioral disorders, brain damage, lifetime activity patterns, and sex differences. Part II, Rationale and Mechanisms details the possible biologic explanation for control of energy output through activity and proposes a mechanism by which it might function in order to maintain an energy in–energy out balance. The hypothesis presented in this section is that the body has a need for energy balance that leads to activity regulation, similar to how the body regulates appetite. In part III, Implications of Biologic Regulation of Activity, some clear implications from current research, which may help health science professionals in their treatment and prevention efforts against patients’ obesity and inactivity, are discussed. Rowland also poses some critical questions for further research, if indeed a biologic controller of activity exists, such as how much effect a biologic controller might have on activity level as compared to environmental factors and whether this biologic regulator could be altered. This book will initiate further discussion, examination, and research into the idea that physical activity may be, at least in part, controlled by a central biologic regulator. Further study may lead to a widespread realization that there is an involuntary biologic regulator of activity that, once fully understood, could lead researchers to discover alternative interventions in the fight against inactivity and obesity.

Winner of the Modern Language Association Prize for a Scholarly Edition One of the most widely read and studied texts composed in Late Antiquity is the prison diary of Vibia Perpetua, a young woman of the elite classes who was martyred in March of the year 202 or 203 C.E. in Carthage, as part of a civic celebration honoring Caesar Geta. She was well-married and had recently become the mother of a baby son, but despite her advantages, she refused to recant her faith when she was arrested with other recent converts to Christianity. Imprisoned with her was her pregnant slave Felicity. Perpetua's steadfastness in her belief led to her martyrdom in the amphitheater. A description of the heroic deaths of both women, and the autobiography of one of the leaders of the Christian community, Saturus, is woven into Perpetua's diary by an anonymous editor, who tells us that, as they died, Perpetua, Felicity, and the other condemned Christians bid farewell with a kiss of peace. This unique and precious text survives in one Greek and in nine Latin manuscript versions. Thomas Heffernan's new study contains much that has never been done before, including a prosopography of all the individuals mentioned in the Passion, a new English translation and the first detailed historical commentary in English on the entire narrative of the Passion. It also includes a newly edited version of the Latin text based on all the extant manuscripts and - rarer still - the Greek text. He concludes the book with a complete codicological description of all of the known manuscripts and thorough scholarly indices of the text itself. Perpetua's prison diary is a revered text of early Christianity, and Heffernan's new translation and commentary brings unprecedented scholarly resources to the much-loved Passion.

Larry Cashman, the lovable rogue and scoundrel, has led an unusual life. He grew up on the means streets of New York City in the 1950s and 1960s. The cauldron of racial and ethnic conflict that was New York City in the mid-twentieth century was a tempestuous place to live for a coward and candy ass who was bereft of ambition, had no aspirations, had few if any skills, and was lazy, selfish and venal. Cashman has been called a troublemaker, a scammer, a loser, a bounder, and a rapscallion. New York City’s cold, inhospitable climate added to Cashman’s misery. He longed to leave his dismal circumstances in New York for some tropical paradise where winter was a distant memory. Given his aimless existence and the absence of any redeeming qualities, the only way Cashman could get to a tropical paradise was if Captain Kirk from Star Trek beamed him there. The best Cashman could hope for was to become a used car salesman on Long Island. What Cashman had in spades was uncanny good luck. Through pure serendipity, he met his wife Sabrina, who not only shared his dream of living in a tropical paradise; she had a concrete plan to achieve it that didn’t rely on a fictional character like Captain Kirk. The Cashman Chronicles recounts the story of Cashman’s journey from the bowels of New York City to his exploits in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. In Volume 1 “Cashman’s Odyssey,” Cashman escapes the shackles of New York City to work on the Navajo Indian Reservation in New Mexico, where a spell cast on him by a medicine man lands him in the hospital needing emergency surgery. He moves on to Hawaii where his distinguished professor overlooks his many idiosyncrasies and sends him to Thailand for his fieldwork. In Thailand, he conducts the fieldwork for his master’s in public health degree under a brilliant public health physician who regularly communicates with aliens from outer space. Then he works in a refugee camp when 140,000 Cambodian refugees fleeing the Pol Pot genocide descend on the camp seeking food, shelter, health care, and safety. In Volume 2 Cashman in the Tropics Cashman moves on to Indonesia and the Philippines where he narrowly escapes being sent to a squalid Indonesian prison. He has run-ins with Indonesian demons and whale sharks. He gets involved in a shady Philippine telecommunications deal that is scuttled when Mt. Pinatubo erupts. He idles away on a golf course in Manila while a coup d’etat threatens his wife and daughter. The helicopter transporting him over the guerilla-infested jungles of Palawan Island in the Philippines crashes because of his spinelessness. After leaving the Philippines, Cashman arrives in Laos as that benighted country opens up to the outside world after twenty years of isolation following the Vietnam War. He travels into the heart of darkness in Laos where he is introduced to its many miseries, like blood-sucking leeches, giant flying insects, toxic elixirs, and the unrecognizable culinary delicacies of Lao cuisine. He is ambushed by guerillas while on an expedition through rebel-infested jungles, and he gets hauled before Lao communist party interrogators who threaten to throw him out of the country. While living in the tropics, Cashman develops a performing act that capitalizes on his unique talent for deceit, guile, and trickery that gets him thrown into jail, causes an audience member to have a heart attack, and gets him threatened by a clown. After leaving the tropics he gets hired and nearly fired as a professor at a prestigious West Coast university. Throughout his odyssey Larry Cashman remains the same unprincipled (but lovable), lazy, venal, and selfish schemer and coward he always was, with no ambition, no aspirations, few skills, and no moral compass whom you initially met in the first chapter of the Cashman Chronicles.
