Employing the insights of recent cultural critics, Reading Marx Writing uses the eight notebooks (the Grundrisse) Marx worked on in 1857-58 to examine his literary, political, and scientific imagination and the fictional writers he admired. By exploring the Grundrisse, the project or plan that Marx did not carry through, the author speculates on the limits and possibilities of Marx's interpretive approach for addressing current issues in philosophy and hermeneutics, critical sociology and political economy, and aesthetics and literary criticism. The study employs certain literary works - notably a scene from Goethe's Faust and several stories from Balzac's Comedie humaine - as looking-glasses or sounding boards for Marx's political and scientific concerns and to connect themes emerging from the cultural economy of the nineteenth century. These literary works are treated less as dramatic illustrations of Marx's life or depictions of his scientific insights than as interpretive frameworks or social fictions which give shape to both Marx's text and the writings of others working in his wake. Through an innovative blend of German critical theory (Lukacs, Marcuse, and Habermas), French post-structuralism (Althusser, Lyotard, and Baudrillard), and Anglo-American cultural criticism (Jameson, Mitchell, and O'Neill), the author develops a unique method for articulating the play of image, text, and even music within Marx's human scientific discourse.

Marx's masterpiece Capital (Das Kapital) ignored or misread as well as selectively and creatively interpreted by the generation of social scientists that came after him. Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Georg Simmel attempt to supplement what they call ‘historical materialism’ or to engage in debates about ‘socialism’ through their readings of The Communist Manifesto and occasional Capital. Although these and other classical sociologists did not have access to most of Marx’s published and unpublished works as we do today, each is concerned with revising and refining Marx’s unfinished critique of political economy. Despite their differences with Marx and with one another, they share his concern with how empirically detailed and scientifically valid knowledge of the social world may inform historical struggles for a more human world. This commitment can be called ‘Faustian’, after the title character of the poet J. W. von Goethe’s tragic epic of modernity, insofar as Marx and the classical sociologists hope to translate theory into practice while making a pact or wager with the diabolical social, political, and economic forces of the modern world.
The essential problem in entrepreneurship is improving the performance of entrepreneurs. The most important theories will be the ones that most enable us to predict and then ultimately influence entrepreneurial performance. This book develops a new and more accurate theory of entrepreneurial performance based in entrepreneurial creativity. The field of entrepreneurship has a long tradition of expecting entrepreneurial performance to be influenced by creativity, tracing back even before the pioneering work of Joseph Schumpeter (1883 to 1950), who defined entrepreneurship as creative-destruction—creating the new by supplanting or destroying the old. Subsequently, psychologist Robert Sternberg defined creativity as broadly encompassing creative aspects of personality, motivation, intellect, thinking style and relevant knowledge. Using Sternberg’s definition of creativity, the authors reviewed the evidence directly linking entrepreneurial creativity and entrepreneurial performance, concluding that the linkage is both statistically and practically significant. In order to scientifically tie entrepreneurship to creativity the book pursues a number of major objectives: In parts one and two, the authors remind us of our scientific challenge in the light of the depressing levels of performance typically to be found in the real world of entrepreneurship and explores the limitations of the dominant paradigms driving research in the field of entrepreneurship today. In part three, they bring together existing evidence to demonstrate the predictive and explanatory powers of creativity in relation to entrepreneurship. In part four, they further explore correlations between creativity and entrepreneurial performance at the individual and macro or society, levels. In summary, the book offers a bold predictive theory linking entrepreneurial creativity to entrepreneurial performance, however neither as boldly as a definitional linkage nor as timidly as one in a hundred or so factors potentially explaining entrepreneurial performance. This result is a general scientific theory that offers a serious challenge to entrepreneurial scholars who are pursuing other means for understanding the causality of entrepreneurial performance.

This book addresses, and at the same time reflects, the impact of Max Weber on both the social sciences and on critical theory’s critique of the social sciences. Weber’s conception of ‘vocation’ is a guiding thread unifying concerns about the nature, scope and limits of theoretical thinking among social scientists, whether supportive or critical of Weber. Not surprisingly, the source of many of these concerns, whether intended or unintended, biographical or situational, is the ambiguous legacy of Weber himself. In this brilliant study, Thomas Pfau argues that the loss of foundational concepts in classical and medieval Aristotelian philosophy caused a fateful separation between reason and will in European thought. Pfau traces the evolution and eventual deterioration of key concepts of human agency—will, person, judgment, action—from antiquity through Scholasticism and on to eighteenth-century moral theory and its critical revision in the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Featuring extended critical discussions of Aristotle, Gnosticism, Augustine, Aquinas, Ockham, Hobbes, Shaftesbury, Mandeville, Hutcheson, Hume, Adam Smith, and Coleridge, this study contends that the humanistic concepts these writers seek to elucidate acquire meaning and significance only inasmuch as we are prepared positively to engage (rather than historicize) their previous usages. Beginning with the rise of theological (and, eventually, secular) voluntarism, modern thought appears increasingly reluctant and, in time, unable to engage the deep history of its own underlying conceptions, thus leaving our understanding of the nature and function of humanistic inquiry increasingly frayed and incoherent. One consequence of this shift is to leave the moral self-expression of intellectual elites and ordinary citizens alike stunted, which in turn has fueled the widespread notion that moral and ethical concerns are but a special branch of inquiry largely determined by opinion rather than dialogical reasoning, judgment, and practice. A clear sign of this regression is the present crisis in the study of the humanities, whose role is overwhelmingly conceived (and negatively appraised) in terms of scientific theories, methods, and objectives. The ultimate casualty of this reductionism has been the very idea of personhood and the disappearance of an adequate ethical language. Minding the Modern is not merely a chapter in the history of ideas; it is a thorough phenomenological and metaphysical study of the roots of today's predicaments.
