This exciting Huckleberry Finn kind of story is about two African herdboys in 1950 going down the Okavango River in a dugout canoe. The beautiful river flows down out of the Benguela Highlands of Angola, crosses the Caprivi Strip of Namibia, then into Botswana where it spreads out through the vast Okavango Delta. The true-to-life adventures of Dibebe and Andara are about hunting, fishing, surviving, visiting friends and kinsmen along the great meandering river. The Hambukushu tribal ceremonies are true to the culture of these remote riverine people. Brave canoemen have traveled through the vast delta in dugout canoes. Bushman paintings can be seen in the mysterious Tsodilo Hills. It is possible that prehistoric peoples left their bones in a cave in these hills. The anthropologist author made eight expeditions from 1950 to 1994 to study the culture of these matrilineal, Bantu-speaking hunters, fishermen, farmers. All events in the story were possible in those long ago days of 1950. This story of karikaripamatango - the olden days - is most informative and educational reading for young people and adults alike!

Moreover, the rate of data acquisitions is accelerating as improved technologies are used and as organized programs such as the Human Genome Initiative are established. Because of this data's importance, molecular biologists have turned to computational scientists for help in processing this mass of information.The Santa Fe Institute organized a workshop on "The Interface Between Computational Science and DNA Sequencing" in 1998 to address this information crisis. Approximately one hundred molecular biologists, computer scientists, mathematicians, and other scientists in diverse fields met to discuss how computational science can best keep pace with molecular biology. The papers presented at that meeting and included in this volume serve as a comprehensive introduction to the field and as a discussion of research on some of the current problems.

He survived Pearl Harbor. He survived Tulagi. He survived the wilds of Africa and the steaming jungles of Central America. This is just one chapter from the extraordinary life of Thomas J. Larson. Ensign "Swede" Larson arrived at Pearl Harbor on December 5th, 1941. He was Executive Officer on YP 109 (Yacht Patrol) through a great storm from Long Beach, California. He was transferred to CinCPac staff, and on December 7th, 1941, was delivering messages to Admiral Kimmel and his staff when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He served with Admiral Chester Nimitz until July 1942, then was assigned to Admiral Ghormley's ComSoPac staff in New Caledonia. On November 30th, he was flown to Guadalcanal, and then next day went to Tulagi as a communicator. He ended the war on the USS Lexington aircraft carrier going into Tokyo Bay in late August of 1945. His peace time career was as an explorer, and professor of Anthropology with many years of field research in Africa. He has degrees from UC Berkeley, MA American U, M Litt Oxford, PhD University of Virginia.

This searching examination of the life and philosophy of the twentieth-century Indian intellectual Jarava Lal Mehta details, among other things, his engagement with the oeuvres of Martin Heidegger, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Jacques Derrida. It shows how Mehta’s sense of cross-cultural philosophy and religious thought were affected by these engagements, and maps the two key contributions Mehta made to the sum of human ideas. First, Mehta outlined what the author dubs a ‘postcolonial hermeneutics’ that uses the ‘ethnotrope’ of the pilgrim to challenge the philosophical hermeneutic emphasis on supplementation and augmentation. For Mehta, the hermeneutic encounter ruptures, rather than supplements, the self. Secondly, Mehta extended this concept of hermeneutics to interrogate the Hindu tradition, arriving at the concept of the ‘negative messianic’. In contrast to Derrida's emphasis on the 'one to come', Mehta shows how the Hindu bhakti model represents the very opposite, that is, the 'withdrawn other,' identifying thereby the ethical pitfalls of deconstructivism's emphasis on the messianic tradition. This is the only full-length study in English of this high-profile Hindu philosopher.
