Titles in the Pets' Guides series teach young readers how to care responsibly for their chosen pet. However, in a unique spin, each book is written from the point of view of one of the animals themselves, thus also allowing the books to be used to teach perspective. In this book, Gordon the Guinea Pig reveals how readers should go about choosing pet guinea pigs, what supplies they will need, how to make a new pet guinea pig feel at home, and how to properly care for pet guinea pigs, including feeding, exercising, and keeping a guinea pig cage clean. Text in the book is accompanied by clear, labelled photographs to further reinforce key concepts.
For more than two centuries in which Catholicism was illegal in Scotland, the Scots Colleges abroad operated as a sixth Scottish university. During this time the university’s alumni, individually and collectively, helped to ensure the survival of Catholicism in Scotland through political and military activity as well as missionary work. Earlier scholarship has treated the colleges individually and overlooked the degree to which the university corpus formed coherent networks which, over two centuries, made significant contributions to greater European cultural and intellectual movements. Through a number of examples, a picture is given of the hitherto little recognised Scottish Catholic contribution to developments in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

This, the first in-depth and comprehensive book-length study of the Russian neo-Kantian movement in English language, challenges the assumption of the isolation of neo-Kantianism to Germany. The present investigation demonstrates that neo-Kantianism had an international dimension by showing the emergence of a parallel movement in Imperial Russia spanning its emergence in the late 19th century to its gradual dissolution in the aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution. The author presents a systematic portrait of the development of Russian neo-Kantianism starting with its rise as a philosophy of science. However, it was with the stream of young students returning to Imperial Russia after a period of study at German universities that the movement accelerated. More often than not, these enthusiastic, young philosophers returned home imbued with the neo-Kantianism of their respective but divergent host institutions. As a result, clashes were inevitable concerning the proper approach to philosophical issues as well as the very understanding of Kant's philosophy and his legacy for contemporary thought. In the end, the broad promise of a Western-oriented neo-Kantianism could not withstand the pressures it confronted on all sides.
Gus Reed was a freed slave who traveled north as Sherman’s March was sweeping through Georgia in 1864. His journey ended in Springfield, Illinois, a city undergoing fundamental changes as its white citizens struggled to understand the political, legal, and cultural consequences of emancipation and black citizenship. Reed became known as a petty thief, appearing time and again in the records of the state’s courts and prisons. In late 1877, he burglarized the home of a well-known Springfield attorney—and brother of Abraham Lincoln’s former law partner—a crime for which he was convicted and sentenced to the Illinois State Penitentiary. Reed died at the penitentiary in 1878, shackled to the door of his cell for days with a gag strapped in his mouth. An investigation established that two guards were responsible for the prisoner’s death, but neither they nor the prison warden suffered any penalty. The guards were dismissed, the investigation was closed, and Reed was forgotten. Gus Reed’s story connects the political and legal cultures of white supremacy, black migration and black communities, the Midwest’s experience with the Civil War and Reconstruction, and the resurgence of nationwide opposition to African American civil rights in the late nineteenth century. These experiences shaped a nation with deep and unresolved misgivings about race, as well as distinctive and conflicting ideas about justice and how to achieve it.
Based on extensive archival research, this book builds on previous studies for the first thorough investigation of the Jesuit mission to England during a critical period between the unsuccessful armadas of 1588 and 1597, a period during which the mission was threatened as much by Catholic and Jesuit opponents as it was by the crown.
This work provides a how-to approach to the fundamentals, methodologies and dynamics of computational organometallic chemistry, including classical and molecular mechanics (MM), quantum mechanics (QM), and hybrid MM/QM techniques. master historian gives readers a fresh new picture of the Civil War as it really was. Buell examines three pairs of commanders from the North and South, who met each other in battle. Following each pair through the entire war, the author reveals the human dimensions of the drama and brings the battles to life. 38 b&w photos.
At approximately seven o’clock in the evening on May 7, 1950, Gordon Malherbe Hillman filled an empty bottle with water, capped it, and walked into his mother’s room in the pair’s fifth-floor suite at Boston’s luxurious Copley Plaza Hotel. He then edged up behind the semi-invalid woman and bludgeoned her to death. Hotel staff had planned to evict the two the following day after several weeks of unpaid rent. Mounting debts had finally broken the fifty-year-old Hillman, a now-struggling author of mixed success, but it had not always been that way, as Thomas Aiello shows in his study of the life and work of this forgotten midcentury figure. As a youth, Hillman attended the prestigious Noble and Greenough School near Boston. Pursuing a career as a writer, he published several dozen pieces of short fiction and a critically acclaimed novel, Fortune’s Cup (1941). Hollywood studios purchased the rights to two of his stories and made them into films, The Great Man Votes (1939) and Here I Am a Stranger (1940). But Hillman remained, for the most part, a middling magazine writer like the majority of fiction authors working during the Depression. Although most did not resort to acts of manic violence, Hillman’s tenuous position in literary circles, along with his gradual descent into financial ruin, proved a far more common tale than the stories of literary success often pored over by critics and historians of this period. In The Trouble in Room 519: Money, Matricide, and Marginal Fiction in the Early Twentieth Century, Aiello weaves a compelling true crime narrative into his exploration of the economics of magazine fiction and the strains placed on authors by the publishing industry prior to World War II. Examining Hillman’s writing as exemplary of Depression-era popular fiction, Aiello includes eight stories written by Hillman and originally published in prominent midcentury American magazines, including Collier’s, Liberty, and McCall’s, to provide additional context and insight into this trying time and tragic life.

I thing that one of the great strengths of this book is its ′real-life′ cases for the students to examine from multiple perspectives." -Sherry Dingman, Marist College "This book approaches ethics from a unique perspective that appeals to students. In addition to providing stimulating cases, it provides the framework and legal background important to psychologists-in-training. Amazing work!...The vignette approach makes the book much more interesting than its competitors." -Misty Ginicola, Southern Connecticut State University Full coverage of the American Psychological Association′s (APA) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and engaging vignettes to draw students into Ethics for Psychologists, a unique textbook that explores the standards of conduct in the field of psychology from key perspectives, including the multicultural, moral, and legal perspectives. Focusing on complex ethical dilemmas students may encounter in real life, this book offers a variety of frameworks through which to examine such dilemmas, as well as commentaries about the dictates of our personal codes of ethics. Students are challenged to take control of their learning experience by moving beyond the basics of looking up each situation to find "the right thing to do," into a more active and engaged approach with the goal of becoming ethical thinkers and informed decision-makers.
Originally published in 1987 Barnaby Rudge is a comprehensive collection of bibliographical resources surrounding Dickens fifth novel Barnaby Rudge. The book addresses what the author terms, a ‘prevalent lack of research’ surrounding the novel. The collection lists bibliographic references which not only looks at the novel itself, but also covers older resources that interested Dicken’s first critics, such as the originality of the settings and characters. The book’s core focus is examining the novel’s historical subject matter in the context of the social and political context in which it was written. The book acts as a core resource for research on Barnaby Rudge.
