Alan Nolan's 1961 Iron Brigade, the classic study of Brigadier General John Gibbon's Black Hat Brigade composed of the 19th Indiana, the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin and the 24th Michigan, drew public attention to the superior unit during the Civil War Centennial. Since then, much has been written about Gibbon's Iron Brigade but nothing has published on the original Iron Brigade from which Gibbon's brigade inherited it name. A moving narrative that offers a rare glimpse into the lives of African American men, women, and children on the cusp of freedom, First Fruits of Freedom chronicles one of the first collective migrations of blacks from the South to the North during and after the Civil War. Janette Thomas Greenwood relates the history of a network forged between Worcester County, Massachusetts, and eastern North Carolina as a result of Worcester regiments taking control of northeastern North Carolina during the war. White soldiers from Worcester, a hotbed of abolitionism, protected refugee slaves, set up schools for them, and led them north at war's end. White patrons and a supportive black community helped many migrants fulfill their aspirations for complete emancipation and facilitated the arrival of additional family members and friends. Migrants established a small black community in Worcester with a distinctive southern flavor. But even in the North, white sympathy did not continue after the Civil War. Despite their many efforts, black Worcesterites were generally disappointed in their hopes for full-fledged citizenship, reflecting the larger national trajectory of Reconstruction and its aftermath.
This book looks at the foundations of school self-evaluation from a scientific as from a practical perspective. The Kanrin Maru was the first Japanese ship to visit the United States of America in an official capacity as the Treaty of Edo that Japan signed with the US Government in 1858 stipulated that Japan should subsequently dispatch an envoy to the US to ratify the Treaty. By March 1859 it had been agreed that a Japanese ambassador and officials would travel to Washington on the Powhatan, the US’s flagship of the East India Squadron, a voyage that was then scheduled to start a year later in February 1860. Preparations to dispatch an ambassador then began. Sometime thereafter, the Japanese government decided they would also send a ship of their own to America. Behind this decision lay three reasons. First this was a matter of pride showing that they too were capable of crossing the mighty Pacific Ocean in their own vessel; second, on a practical note, the Kanrin Maru (the vessel that made the journey) would return with news of Powhatan’s safe arrival in the US but third, she would also carry a second Ambassador in case the Powhatan failed to reach the US. This is the story of that voyage.
