Of the norms presented here, which summarize an experience of more than thirty years, several are not part of any of the usual methods of suggestion, and among the rest some are modifications of norms followed in some of those. That a much better method of suggestion is possible than the usual ones should not be surprising. The means to give to the suggested idea or image the maximum intensity, and therefore the maximum effectiveness, have much more relation to psychology than to the ordinary medical knowledge: moreover very few physicians apply real cures by suggestion and these ones do it too rarely or do not study to go perfecting their procedures enough to be able to discover certain norms that only a long, varied and meditated practice of suggestion can teach. The advantages of the present method over the usual ones consist: in a constant harmlessness of the procedures in placing the sick person in that state of mind which is almost always indispensable; in a very great increase in the number and variety of cases in which results are obtained which no other cure can give; and in a much more frequent stability of the results obtained. If the book has a rather large number of pages, the norms, however, occupy only a small part of it, the largest part being occupied by explanations; moreover, many norms are only rarely applied, and some (as will result from what will be said about their office) are not indispensable except in cases that are difficult to treat, while in others an eventual neglect of some of them does not cause greater damage than a delay in obtaining the result. The health conditions in which I found myself during the preparation of the first edition induced me to finish it hastily, fearing that otherwise I would not have had the possibility. The additions and many modifications that I have introduced in this second edition will certainly make the book much more worthy of the favor that the first one received.

As the site of royal coronations, Reims cathedral was a monument to French national history and identity. But after German troops bombed the cathedral during World War I, it took on new meaning. The French reimagined it as a martyr of civilization, as the rupture between the warring states. Despite a history of mutual respect, the bombing of the cathedral caused all social, scientific, artistic, and cultural ties between Germany and France to be severed for decades. The resulting battle of words and images stressed the differences between German Kultur and French civilisation. Artists and intelligentsia caricatured this entrenched cultural dichotomy, influencing portrayals of the two nations in the international press. This book explores the structure’s breadth of meaning in symbolic, art historical, and historical arenas, including competing claims over the origins of Gothic art and architecture as national style and issues of monument preservation and restoration. It highlights how vulnerable art is during war, and how the destruction of nation-al monuments can set the tone for international conflict—once again a timely and pressing issue. Thomas W. Gaehtgens articulates how these nations began to mend their relationship in the decades after World War II, starting with the courageous vision of Charles de Gaulle and Konrad Adenauer, and how the cathedral of Reims was eventually transformed into a site of reconciliation and European unification.

How come we find similar alternations in other Slavic languages and in a Baltic language like Lithuanian? The quest for the origin of the so-called "mobile accent paradigms" of Baltic and Slavic leads the reader through other Indo-European language branches such as Indo-Iranian, Greek and Germanic, all of which are relevant to the reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European accentuation system. In this landmark work, Thomas Tweed examines nineteenth-century America's encounter with one of the world's major religions. Exploring the debates about Buddhism that followed upon its introduction in this country, Tweed shows what happened when the transplanted religious movement came into contact with America's established culture and fundamentally different Protestant tradition. The book, first published in 1992, traces the efforts of various American interpreters to make sense of Buddhism in Western terms. Tweed demonstrates that while many of those interested in Buddhism considered themselves dissenters from American culture, they did not abandon some of the basic values they shared with their fellow Victorians. In the end, the Victorian understanding of Buddhism, even for its most enthusiastic proponents, was significantly shaped by the prevailing culture. Although Buddhism attracted much attention, it ultimately failed to build enduring institutions or gain significant numbers of adherents in the nineteenth century. Not until the following century did a cultural environment more conducive to Buddhism's taking root in America develop. In a new preface, Tweed addresses Buddhism's growing influence in contemporary American culture.
