In the late 1970s, while America was in the throes of the first major fabricated oil shortage in history, Tom Archer, recent academy graduate, climbed aboard his first ship as the new third mate on the BALTIMORE CANON, an old rusting T-2 tanker engaged in the Alaskan Prudhoe Bay oil trade. The youngest officer by at least eight years, he found himself frequently filling in for the second mate, occasionally for the chief, and once for the captain. This is the story of those voyages, coming directly from the third mate's personal log, including a realistic accounting of an off-shore oil operation that most people have no access to information about.
Imagine Huckleberry Fin, sold and subsequently adopted at birth through an underground market, waking up in an urban world of wealth, a dysfunctional family, ROTC prep schools and trussed in a stubborn and unforgiving religion. Add to this an illicit love story, a mystery to resolve, a psychological thriller, and Victoria, an indomitable alter ego who abducts Huckleberry only to set him free in one of the cleverest escape adventures of all time. Told with blistering pace, absolute unpredictability, a movie like read, and a frugality or words unmatched, this book can be worn in your hip pocket until read on the way to work.

Thomas B. Dewey wrote four novels featuring Singer Batts, bibliophile and hotel owner. Singer prefers the company of his books and an occasional foray into the Lonely Hearts Club world. But he keeps getting embroiled in murders! The Boston Herald called the first book "well paced and lively," and The Saturday Review called it, "lively, lurid, and outspoken." Author Dorothy Hughes said: "It's murder and mayhem and hold onto your hats. Amusing and amazing." And they’re a lot of fun. The hauntings happened to my own family members. Many of these things happened to the kids... the old lady in the closet, being chased in the middle of the night, or the red eyes. Yes, they really happened to the kids, including the hooded figure. In spite of my own experiences, I cannot imagine the terror the children went through growing up. I realize that I had no idea to the extent of things until one day, we (the children and I) started talking about it. It was terrifying and had a lifelong effect on them. Being a writer, though, I naturally thought, “great book idea!” So, with their consent and armed with (our) stories, I have penned, Silent Endurance.
This is a collection of the published and previously unpublished short stories by Thomas Murtha, a Canadian writer born and raised in Ontario. Murtha was one of the notable experimental writers of the 1920s, but his work has been largely ignored by literary historians. Thomas Murtha was a classmate and colleague of other notable Canadians including former prime minister Paul Martin, Morley Callaghan, and Raymond Knister. Callaghan, Murtha, and Knister greatly influenced each others' work. Complete with a biographical introduction from Murtha's son, William, this collection provides insight into the work and life of one of Canada's most talented writers.
Covering the entire world of business from heavy industry to the financial houses of Wall Street, this book shines a spotlight on 100 of the most infamous cases of misconduct and malfeasance in corporate history. Corporations are in the business of making money. But when companies forget ethics, take operational shortcuts, or willingly endanger customers and the general public in their quest for profits, disasters of enormous magnitude can result. This book examines 100 of the worst cases of corporate greed and irresponsibility and poses the questions: Is it necessary or desirable to conduct business in this manner? Do the penalties and other punishments levied against these companies go far enough? And what is the government's responsibility for keeping corporate misdeeds in check? Coauthored by distinguished public policy experts, When Good Companies Go Bad: 100 Corporate Miscalculations and Misdeeds presents a representative sample of cases on a variety of topics, such as the financial sector, health care, environmental protection, product liability, and copyright. This broad introduction to the dark side of the corporate world focuses on events and scandals that resulted in substantial financial penalties, regulatory actions, or criminal convictions. The cases are presented in a readable and engaging format, making the book an illuminating and informative read for high school and college students as well as businesspeople, lawyers, journalists, and professors who teach American politics, public law, or public policy.
