Eight hundred and six of Hawaii’s sons gave their lives while serving in the armed forces of the United States during the Second World War. In Freedom’s Cause is a tribute and a memorial to these men. For this roll of honor, the compilers have tried to secure biographical data and photographs of all men of Hawaii who died in military service between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946, when President Harry S. Truman proclaimed the termination of hostilities. Collection of these records started almost as soon as the Hawaii War Records Depository was established at the University of Hawaii in the spring of 1943. The Depository, set up as a result of cooperative action on the part of members of the faculty of the University, territorial legislators, and other public leaders, was authorized to collect and preserve all available historical records pertaining to Hawaii’s participation in World War II. One of its first projects was to assemble a file of biographical data on men who had died in military service, which would become one of many sources from which information for this volume was gathered.

Litigating War offers an in-depth examination of the law and procedure of the Eritrea-Ethiopia Claims Commission, which was tasked with deciding, through binding arbitration, claims for losses, damages, and injuries resulting from the 1998-2000 Eritrean-Ethiopian war. After providing an overview of the war, the authors describe how the Commission was established, its jurisdiction, the sources of law it applied, its treatment of nationality and evidentiary issues, and the relief it rendered. Separate chapters then address particular topics, such as the initiation of the war, battlefield conduct, belligerent occupation, aerial bombardment, prisoners of war, enemy aliens and their property, diplomats and diplomatic property, and general economic loss. A final chapter examines the lessons that might be learned from the experience of the Claims Commission, especially with an eye to the establishment of such commissions in the future. The volume includes a preface from James Crawford and also reproduces all the key documents relating to the Commission: the bilateral agreement establishing the Commission; its rules of procedure; and its numerous decisions and arbitral awards. The analytical portion of the volume contains extensive cross-references to these primary documents. Further, a comprehensive table of contents and indexes relating to subject matter, treaties, and cases provide ready access to all the material contained within.

Until 1947, professional ball players were paid only from opening day to season's end. Even during the season, a lot of their expenses came out of their own pockets. Even the best-paid players had trouble making ends meet. One answer to their money woes was barnstorming--tours out of season. Cities lacking their own major league teams were happy to host big-league players for such events, as well as for special exhibition games whose proceeds sometimes went to local charities. Here is a history of barnstorming and exhibition games from 1901 (when both of the two current major leagues began operating) through 1962 (when a team led by Willie Mays was unsuccessful in its attempt at a tour, signaling an end to true barnstorming).
