Innovationen können verhindern, dass Konzerne langfristig von solchen Unternehmungen verdrängt werden. Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) stellt eine geeignete Form dar das Innovationsmanagement zu unterstützen. Obwohl es eng mit dem Venture Capital Finanzierungskonzept verwandt ist, stellt CVC eine für Unternehmen variierte Form Innovation zu schüren dar. Die Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich in einem empirischen Teil mit dem Einsatz dieses Instrumentes in einem Entwicklungsland, wo naturgemäß Innovationsaktivitäten weniger ausgeprägt sind. Deswegen stoßen Konzerne beim erfolgreichen Einsatz von CVC auf Hindernisse und Grenzen. Eine Analyse des Brasilianischen CVC Marktes und eine integrierte Fallstudie eines großen nationalen CVC Gebers offenbaren Unterschiede zu Industrieländern. Die gegenwärtige Forschung, welche meist auf Industrieländer beschränkt bleibt, stuft strategische CVC Aktivitäten als sehr sinnvoll sein. Die Analyse ergibt jedoch, dass finanzielle Zielsetzungen in Brasilien überwiegen. Unterschiedliche Markt und Regulierungsbedingungen, Kulturunterschiede, Schwachstellen im der Makroökonomischen Umwelt, im Anreizsystem sowie andere Herausforderungen, erfordern Anpassungen beim Einsatz von CVC, um mit erhöhten Risiken besser umzugehen, unabhängig in welcher Phase des CVC Prozesses. Nichtsdestotrotz erscheint CVC ein geeignetes Innovationsinstrument in Brasilien zu sein und besitzt noch Entwicklungspotential. Abstract: Corporations require innovation to maintain business, since small enterprises with new products can rapidly overtake slow established ones. Corporate venture capital seems attractive to generate radical innovation. While CVC is closely related to the financing concept of venture capital, corporations increasingly use corporate venture capital to foster innovation efforts. In developing countries, where innovation activities are scarce, corporations face many obstacles and barriers to deploy successfully corporate venture capital. An empirical study of Brazil's corporate venture capital market reveals business practices different from conventional concepts in industrialized countries. Since the discovery of the endocannabinoid system, cannabis and cannabinoids have received renewed attention. The elucidation of the biochemical machinery responsible for cannabinoid effects, has led to the identification of several targets that can be addressed by cannabinoid analogs. The most prominent targets are the cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2. The endocannabinoid system acts as a versatile regulating system found in mammals that is involved in a broad range of physiological and neuronal processes. Accordingly, cannabinoid ligands have been proposed for the treatment of a large number of diseases and symptoms, including cancer, multiple sclerosis and AIDS. In the present thesis, several strategies to address the endocannabinoid system were pursued. Besides the synthesis of well over a hundred potentially active new compounds based on the lead structure of the potent cannabinoid analogs, 3-benzylcoumarins, a formal total synthesis of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) via an DIELS-ALDER-reaction was concluded. Additionally, some of the most potent compounds from preceding work have been encapsulated in micro- and nanoparticulate carrier systems. The particles were capable to release their cannabinoid payloads over hours, days, weeks and even months. The described microparticulate carrier systems should be able to generate site specific and long-term stable drug levels.

Thomas Alexander shows that the primary, guiding concern of Dewey's philosophy is his theory of aesthetic experience. He directly challenges those critics, most notably Stephen Pepper and Benedetto Croce, who argued that this area is the least consistent part of Dewey's thought. The author demonstrates that the fundamental concept in Dewey's system is that of "experience" and that paradigmatic treatment of experience is to be found in Dewey's analysis of aesthetics and art. The confusions resulting from the neglect of this orientation have led to prolonged misunderstandings, eventual neglect, and unwarranted popularity for ideas at odds with the genuine thrust of Dewey's philosophical concerns. By exposing the underlying aesthetic foundations of Dewey's philosophy, Alexander aims to rectify many of these errors, generating a fruitful new interest in Dewey.

The crusade against nuclear weapons in Great Britain, West Germany, France, and the Netherlands in the early 1980s dwarfed all previous protest movements in Western Europe in the postwar period. What produced the demonstrations against NATO's decision in December 1979 to base 572 cruise and Pershing II missiles in five West European countries? What generated the widespread support that the demonstrators enjoyed? Contrary to the frequent claim that such political movements are a symptom of governmental crisis in the advanced industrial democracies, Thomas Rochon develops the idea that they arise from a creative impulse and perform crucial functions of innovative criticism. He concludes that the West European peace movement has ignited a public debate in which reduction or elimination of certain categories of nuclear weapons is taken seriously for the first time. Among the topics examined are the sources of support for the peace movement in public opinion, the types of people who joined or supported the movement, and proposals they offered for a nonnuclear defense policy. The author discusses the organization of the movement and its choice of tactics, its impact on politics, and the links between it and other institutions such as churches, trade unions, and political parties. Originally published in 1988. Thinking Geometrically: A Survey of Geometries is a well written and comprehensive survey of college geometry that would serve a wide variety of courses for both mathematics majors and mathematics education majors. Great care and attention is spent on developing visual insights and geometric intuition while stressing the logical structure, historical development, and deep interconnectedness of the ideas. Students with less mathematical preparation than upper-division mathematics majors can successfully study the topics needed for the preparation of high school teachers. There is a multitude of exercises and projects in those chapters developing all aspects of geometric thinking for these students as well as for more advanced students. These chapters include Euclidean Geometry, Axiomatic Systems and Models, Analytic Geometry, Transformational Geometry, and Symmetry. Topics in the other chapters, including Non-Euclidean Geometry, Projective Geometry, Finite Geometry, Differential Geometry, and Discrete Geometry, provide a broader view of geometry. The different chapters are as independent as possible, while the text still manages to highlight the many connections between topics. The text is self-contained, including appendices with the material in Euclid’s first book and a high school axiomatic system as well as Hilbert’s axioms. Appendices give brief summaries of the parts of linear algebra and multivariable calculus needed for certain chapters. While some chapters use the language of groups, no prior experience with abstract algebra is presumed. The text will support an approach emphasizing dynamical geometry software without being tied to any particular software.

Guarino argues in this book that the doctrinal form of the Christian faith, in its essential characteristics, calls for certain theoretical exigencies. This is to say that the proportion and beauty of the form is not served or illuminated by simply any presuppositions. Rather, a determinate understanding of first philosophy, of the nature of truth, of hermeneutical theory, of the predication of language and mutual correlation is required if Christian faith and doctrine are to maintain a recognizable and suitably mediative form. Failing to adduce specific principles will lead either to a simple assertion of Christian truth, in which case the form of Christianity becomes less intelligible and attractive-or one will substitute a radically changed form, which is itself inappropriate for displaying the fundamental revelatory narrative of faith. The house of Christian faith possesses a certain proportion of structure; the form will sag badly if one removes an undergirding item, or if one beam is replaced with another of variable shape or size. The form's beauty will either be obscured, no longer clearly visible, or the form will become something quite different, no longer architectonically related to what was originally the case. The intention of this book is to discuss those doctrinal characteristics considered fundamental to the Christian faith, as protective of its revelatory form and, concomitantly, to examine the theoretical principles required if such form is to remain both intelligible and beautiful.
