When genocidal violence gripped Rwanda in 1994, the international community recoiled, hastily withdrawing its peacekeepers. Late that year, in an effort to redeem itself, the United Nations Security Council created the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda to seek accountability for some of the worst atrocities since World War II: the genocide suffered by the Tutsi and crimes against humanity suffered by the Hutu. Kaing Guek Eav, plus connu sous le nom de Douch, responsable de la torture et de la mort de plus de 12 000 victimes à la prison de Tuol Sleng (S-21), est seul derrière une vitre insonorisée : seul face à la justice internationale, seul face aux familles de ses victimes, seul peut-être plus que tout face à lui-même, à l’étendue d’un crime impossible à sonder, impossible à pardonner. Le maître des aveux est une saisissante évocation de son destin, mais aussi de l’étonnante « comédie humaine », tour à tour bouleversante et déroutante, qui s’est déroulée autour de son procès.
