She crept back down the stairs and turned to her left and saw a stone path which she began to follow that led to the back of the house. There she saw a large enclosed back porch that had many tall windows and a door. She thought to herself that Mama would love to sit out there in the afternoons and Rick could even sleep in his playpen in the enclosed area and how she would just love to play in this big backyard! She turned her eyes to the wide long lawn that comprised the back of the property, and she spied two very large maple trees in the very back of the yard, the leaves of which were just beginning to turn red, and mused that her father could put swings up on each of the trees! Just as she was delighting herself with all the wonderful possibilities of living there, she heard mans voice behind her softly ask, Are you looking for someone little girl? She whirled around, suddenly afraid of both being on someones property without her mothers permission and meeting up with a stranger. She began to stammer a reply but couldnt form her words very well, I...I...I was... I mean I was just looking...

In Reagan's Gun-Toting Nuns, Theresa Keeley analyzes the role of intra-Catholic conflict within the framework of U.S. foreign policy formulation and execution during the Reagan administration. She challenges the preponderance of scholarship on the administration that stresses the influence of evangelical Protestants on foreign policy toward Latin America. Especially in the case of U.S. engagement in El Salvador and Nicaragua, Keeley argues, the bitter debate between U.S. and Central American Catholics over the direction of the Catholic Church shaped President Reagan's foreign policy. The flash point for these intra-Catholic disputes was the December 1980 political murder of four American Catholic missionaries in El Salvador. Liberal Catholics described nuns and priests in Central America who worked to combat structural inequality as human rights advocates living out the Gospel's spirit. Conservative Catholics saw them as agents of class conflict who furthered the so-called Gospel according to Karl Marx. The debate was an old one among Catholics, but, as Reagan's Gun-Toting Nuns contends, it intensified as conservative, anticommunist Catholics played instrumental roles in crafting U.S. policy to fund the Salvadoran government and the Nicaraguan Contras. Reagan's Gun-Toting Nuns describes the religious actors as human rights advocates and, against prevailing understandings of the fundamentally secular activism related to human rights, highlights religion-inspired activism during the Cold War. In charting the rightward development of American Catholicism, Keeley provides a new chapter in the history of U.S. diplomacy and shows how domestic issues such as contraception and abortion joined with foreign policy matters to shift Catholic laity toward Republican principles at home and abroad.

Conducting an experiment Theresa Herrmann investigates why nonprofessional investors fail to incorporate disclosures on fair value estimates into their investment decision and what causes this exclusion. Differentiating between different types of disclosures and the development of the fair value (gain vs. loss) the results indicate that with a fair value gain, none of the disclosure information increases decision usefulness, irrespective of the presentation format. When a fair value loss occurs, fair value disclosures presented in a salient presentation format decrease decision usefulness. Thus, investors have varying information needs that are strongly linked to the development of a firm’s key asset.

This study investigates the awareness and practice of responsible lobbying in the EU and analyzes benefits and antecedents. A multidimensional model of responsible lobbying is developed which provides normative guidelines and allows for determining the degree of responsible lobbying in practice. The empirical part analyzes responsible lobbying in the EU by combining a quantitative analysis based on a survey among 142 lobbyists with a qualitative examination based on interviews. The analysis reveals that criteria of responsible lobbying are fulfilled to a large extent according to the lobbyists. This study comes at a time when researchers and practitioners increasingly recognize the need to establish responsible lobbying by aligning Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and lobbying.

We found her rolling on the ground, in a very dark part of the area. We managed to get her to sit on a wall and she told us she had just sold herself for four cans of lager, and had already taken a cocktail of drugs and alcohol.' But that is not the end of the story. 'Some days later we heard she had been admitted to hospital... this was to be the turning point in her life... She pulled through and, with determination, she now has a secure job in a high class restaurant.
