This study investigates the awareness and practice of responsible lobbying in the EU and analyzes benefits and antecedents. A multidimensional model of responsible lobbying is developed which provides normative guidelines and allows for determining the degree of responsible lobbying in practice. The empirical part analyzes responsible lobbying in the EU by combining a quantitative analysis based on a survey among 142 lobbyists with a qualitative examination based on interviews. The analysis reveals that criteria of responsible lobbying are fulfilled to a large extent according to the lobbyists. This study comes at a time when researchers and practitioners increasingly recognize the need to establish responsible lobbying by aligning Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and lobbying.

When some of the richest men in America, including John Jacob Astor, realized in the 1890s that the New York Central, Lehigh Valley, Erie, and Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroads passed through a one-mile corridor, they began planning a community. In 1892, the renowned firm of Olmsted, Olmsted & Eliot designed a residential development surrounding manufacturing facilities. In 1894, it was incorporated as the village of Depew. The first tenant, the New York Central Locomotive Works, attracted a number of railroad-related industries, and Depew continued to grow until advances in technology and the Depression caused the New York Central to withdraw in 1931. Gradually, others such as Magnus Metal, National Battery, and Symington-Gould were phased out. Depew would never become a vast industrial complex as first planned, but today, the village is a mixture of residential and commercial development.

This book aims to contribute to the discourse on women and politics in Southeast Asia. The chapters, covering Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Timor-Leste and Singapore, analyse the asymmetrical power relationships between the sexes and how power differentials between men and women play out in the realm of politics are a reflection of the power contestations women face with men in other spheres of everyday life. Each chapter seeks to ask a different question in terms of where women viz. men stand in the political landscape of their countries, in an effort to answer the question of Where are the women in the gender trope in Asian politics. While the chapters are primarily empirical as they delve into the challenges, contradictions and conflicts Southeast Asian women encounter, the main assertion is that womens struggles in the realm of politics are a result of having to operate within power structures created principally by men, thereby producing barriers for women to enter politics, on the one hand, and to increase their numbers and widen their sphere of influence, on the other. Recognizing that Asian politics is dominated by men, the question of how women have negotiated a value system that is inherently male-centred and male-controlled is also discussed. The implicit narrative demonstrated in this book is that the political arena should not be considered in isolation from other arenas but instead is essentially a mirror of other arenas whether the home, workplace, nation, and/or global spaces each marked by power contestations between men and women and having a spill-over effect on the other, as well as shaping womens experiences in the political realm.

In Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz: Feminist Reconstruction of Biography and Text, Yugar invites you to accompany Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, a seventeenth-century protofeminist and ecofeminist, on her lifelong journey within three communities of women in the Americas. Sor Juana's goal was to reconcile inequalities between men and women in central Mexico and between the Spaniards and the indigenous Nahua population of New Spain. Yugar reconstructs a her-story narrative through analysis of two primary texts Sor Juana wrote en sus propias palabras (in her own words), El Sueno (The Dream) and La Respuesta (The Answer). Yugar creates a historically-based narrative in which Sor Juana's sueno of a more just world becomes a living nightmare haunted by misogyny in the form of the church, the Spanish Tribunal, Jesuits, and more--all seeking her destruction. In the process, Sor Juana "hoists [them] with their own petard." In seventeenth-century colonial Mexico, just as her Latina sisters in the Americas are doing today, Sor Juana used her pluma (pen) to create counternarratives in which the wisdom of women and the Nahua inform her sueno of a more just world for all.

This study shows that women involved in National Socialism in the years 1924 - 1934 developed and shaped a recognizable discourse which communicated and reflected their position and status within the NS movement. The analysis is based on a variety of text-types produced by members of NS women's organisations, and includes official correspondence, circulars, reports, pamphlets, monographs and articles from NS women's journals. It draws upon several areas of linguistic theory, including feminist linguistics, semantics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, and the salient features identified in the female discourse are placed within a sociolinguistic framework. While previous research into the language of the NS-system has largely ignored the possibility of a cohesive female discourse, the study supports the idea that this discourse was dynamic, and at times heterogeneous, whilst also displaying many self-defining and self-referential features. It is characterised by its ambiguities and apparent contradictions, which expresses separateness and difference, yet also solidarity with the NSDAP.
