This volume presents a short review study of the potential relationships between cognitive neuroscience and educational science. Conducted by order of the Dutch Programme Council for Educational Research of the Netherlands Organization for Scienti c Research (NWO; cf. the American NSF), the review aims to identify: (1) how educational principles, mechanisms, and theories could be extended or re ned based on ndings from cognitive neuroscience, and (2) which neuroscience prin- ples, mechanisms, or theories may have implications for educational research and could lead to new interdisciplinary research ventures. The contents should be seen as the outcome of the ‘Explorations in Learning and the Brain’ project. In this project, we started with a ‘quick scan’ of the lite- ture that formed the input for an expert workshop that was held in Amsterdam on March 10–11,2008. This expert workshopidenti ed additional relevant themesand issues that helped us to update the ‘quick scan’ into this nal document. In this way the input from the participants of the expert workshop (listed in Appendix A) has greatly in uenced the present text. We are therefore grateful to the participants for their scholarly and enthusiastic contributions. The content of the current volume, however, is the full responsibility of the authors.
Time-variable exposure profiles of pesticides are more often the rule than exception in the surface waters of agricultural landscapes. There is, therefore, a need to adequately address the uncertainties arising from time-variable exposure profiles in the aquatic risk assessment procedure for pesticides. Linking Aquatic Exposure and Effects: Risk As
Brings together in one volume Korthagen's research on integrating theory & practice in teacher education. Focuses on the concept of "realistic teacher education" -- how teachers can use reflection to link theory & practice.

Background information on the country and the stories, and color photographs and illustrations, along with a detailed bibliography, makes this a well-rounded resource for educators, folklore scholars, and general readers. All levels.
From reviews to the first edtion: "Bornscheuer and Kazlauskas have set out, and succeeded, in producing a definitive manual on hydrolytic enzymes (especially lipases, esterases, and proteases) for organic chemists. This is quite simply the best book of its type and can be unreservedly recommended to organic chemists who have an interest in using hydrolytic enzymes in synthesis." (Nicholas J. Turner, University of Edinburgh) "The book is an indispensable source of information on the use of hydrolases in organic synthesis. The subject matter is very well set out, and the chapters are clearly written and presented from a critical viewpoint. Bornscheuer and Kazlauskas have succeeded admirably in describing the capabilities and limitations of the use of hydrolytic enzymes and in critically evaluating them. No library should be without the book." (Fritz Theil, WITEGA Angewandte Werkstoff-Forschung GmbH, Berlin) The second edition of this extremely successful and well-proven book presents recent developments in the use of hydrolases for organic synthesis, reflecting in particular the enormous progress made in enzyme discovery and optimization with a new chapter on "Protein Sources and Optimization of Biocatalyst Performance". The renowned authors survey the stereoselective reactions of hydrolases, especially lipases, esterases and proteases, giving researchers an overview of what has worked in the past so that they can judge how to solve their own synthetic problems. In total, the book contains over one thousand chemical structures, rounded off by some 1,800 invaluable references.
This text takes a wholly new look at a major early twentieth-century Dutch poet and novelist from the perspective of world literature, situating his work in both a national and a world literary context as measured against contemporaries and near-contemporaries such as Conrad, Pound, Brecht, Segalen, and Malraux. Exemplifying how an author from a “minor” literature may be a “major” world author, this book considers the debates within World Literature regarding the classification of literatures as ‘major’ and ‘minor’, canon formation within Dutch literature, Slauerhoff's position in the Dutch tradition as well as well as his contribution to world literature, particularly focusing on his East Asian poems, his East Asian novels and stories and his poetry and prose set in Latin America. This book is a key read for scholars and students of comparative literature, world literature, European literature, and Dutch literature. Lucid in style, innovative in approach, surprisingly fresh qua topic, this book opens new horizons for literary studies.
This book gathers some of the most talented and well-informed experts in the field, who not only summarize the recent breakthroughs and new findings, but also shed light on future research. Special emphasis is placed on the exciting new understanding of the molecular structure of one of the major enzymes (type 1 iodothyronine deiodinase) involved in the activation of the thyroid hormone. This breakthrough culminates the major effort in this field around the world. As a result, we can study the regulation of thyroid hormone activation mechanism at the molecular level. Two other important deiodinase enzymes (types II and III) are also reviewed. Alternate pathways of thyroid hormone metabolism represent another major advance. These pathways are associated with a variety of physiological and disease states, including fasting, glucocorticoid excess, fetal development, and inflammatory and non-thyroidal illnesses. The understanding of these pathways assists us to better understand the physiological and biological basis of the disease process and thus to improve clinical management of patients with thyroidal and non-thyroidal illnesses.
This book explores ways to drive and increase a brand’s most important property, its equity. Focussing on gender, the author analyses the impact of assigning personalities and characteristics to products and how this can affect the management of brands on a global scale. Using detailed examples, the author argues that brands with low masculine and feminine characteristics have the lowest equity, whilst brands with both high feminine and masculine characteristics are shown to have the strongest equity. Including notions of androgyny in brands, this significant study reveals the different factors which can affect a brand being perceived as either masculine or feminine. Aiming to develop a comprehensive theory and provide practitioners with a guide to increasing the equity of their brands, this controversial and pioneering book lays the foundation for creating a global brand personality model.
Discusses the IT management tasks and the objects involved. This book outlines traditional IT management; deals with controlling IT; and, tackles the financial, personnel, purchasing, legal and security aspects in IT. It explains the effects of striving for 'utility computing' and control of IT by means of 'IT portfolio management'.
Governing, managing and organizing the supply and demand for IT is the subject of this book. The book consists of five parts. These parts are the basic concepts, organizing IT demand and supply, governing and controlling IT, aspects of IT governance and management, and IT governance and management, which in the future will often use IT platforms.
Religious education seeks to help students acquire religious ideas by interpreting religious and other stories in accordance with their life world. Schools pursue this goal by organising religious learning activities. The question is whether the acquisition of religious ideas is possible for young students, considering the difficulties such as the complex and not readily understandable religious stories, and social developments as de-institutionalisation, de-traditionalisation and pluralisation? What are the possibilities for primary schools of teaching their students knowledge about religious ideas? What is the influence of feelings on the acquisition? What possibilities in the form of learning arrangements can be created for primary school students, with their diverse religious backgrounds, to acquire religious ideas optimally? That is the cardinal problem explored in this study.
This monograph presents new ideas in nomic truth approximation. It features original and revised papers from a (formal) philosopher of science who has studied the concept for more than 35 years. Over the course of time, the author's initial ideas evolved. He discovered a way to generalize his first theory of nomic truth approximation, viz. by dropping an unnecessarily strong assumption. In particular, he first believed to have to assume that theories were maximally specific in the sense that they did not only exclude certain conceptual possibilities, but also that all non-excluded possibilities were in fact claimed to be nomically possible. Now, he argues that the exclusion claim alone, or for that matter the inclusion claim alone, is sufficient to motivate the formal definition of being closer to the nomic truth. The papers collected here detail this generalized view of nomic truthlikeness or verisimilitude. Besides this, the book presents, in adapted form, the relation with several other topics, such as, domain revision, aesthetic progress, abduction, inference to the best explanation, pragmatic aspects, probabilistic methods, belief revision and epistemological positions, notably constructive realism. Overall, the volume presents profound insight into nomic truth approximation. This idea seeks to determine how one theory can be closer to, or more similar to, the truth about what is nomically, e.g. physically, chemically, biologically, possible than another theory. As a result, it represents the ultimate goal of theory oriented empirical science. Theo Kuipers is the author of Studies in Inductive Probability and Rational Expectation (1978), From Instrumentalism to Constructive Realism (2000) and Structures in Science (2001). He is the volume-editor of the Handbook on General Philosophy of Science (2007). In 2005 there appeared two volumes of Essays in Debate with Theo Kuipers, entitled Confirmation, Empirical Progress, and Truth Approximation and Cognitive Structures in Scientific Inquiry.
Governance of the World's Mineral Resources: Beyond the Foreseeable Future provides in-depth information on the geological scarcity of mineral resources. The book demonstrates the urgent need to implement sustainable utilization of mineral resources, in order to ensure that these resources will be sufficiently available for future generations too. The availability of resources, especially for modern technologies, is an increasingly important issue. Some key mineral resources are so geologically scarce that their availability for future generations may not only become substantially less, but also much less affordable than for the current generation unless timely measures are taken. This book provides detailed data and calculations of the availability of mineral resources. The book elaborates on whether and how it is possible to keep providing sufficient mineral resources to a growing world population, and for how long. The book details also how and for how much time it will be possible for all countries, worldwide, to achieve and maintain service delivery of raw materials to their population at levels equivalent to those in developed countries in 2020. Governance of the World's Mineral Resources: Beyond the Foreseeable Future is therefore an important source of knowledge for postgraduates, academics and researchers in the fields of environmental science, sustainability, and geology, as well as anyone in the field of mining and economics who need to account for sustainable provision of mineral resources. - Provides a thorough overview of all considerations related to a sustainable production rate of mineral resources - Comprehensively details scarce mineral resources and describes their applications, worldwide in-use stock increases, and sustainable production rates - Covers all aspects of a sustainable production rate of mineral resources, detailing the current challenges and possible global solutions, both technically and from a policy point of view - Includes detailed studies of thirteen different scarce mineral resources and extensive quantitative data from recent studies and in-depth research
The Present Tense in Modern Hindi Fiction contributes to the interpretation of Hindi prose by analysing the use of the present tense in over 250 texts. While sketching the history of the present tense in Hindi fiction, the book focuses primarily on the narrative techniques that invite its use, such as interior monologue, free indirect discourse, consonant psycho-narration, and camera eye. Moreover, it offers a fresh interpretation of the two types of present tense found in Hindi. The indexes of authors, titles, and analytical concepts provide easy access to the analyses. The book will also be of interest to scholars studying the use of the present tense in modern fiction worldwide. The present tense is used more widely in Hindi than in languages such as English, and some trends that are also found in the literatures of other languages (such as the occurrence of the present tense in internal sensory focalisation) are more clearly visible in Hindi fiction. More importantly, a new explanation of present-tense passages is proposed which can also be applied elsewhere. Insight into this technique, referred to as Internal Focalisation of Awareness, leads to a better understanding of present-tense texts.
The Croatian-Dutch architect duo of Branimir Medic and Pero Puljiz have a working method that could be described as cleverly linking and rearranging elements that just fall short of being identical. By these means they convincingly create new forms and surprising spaces. It is a method that yields buildings that are minimalist, and at the same time, dynamic. Indeed, their body of work can best be described as dynamic minimalist. Educated as architects at Zagreb University, the two continued their studies at the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands. After winning first and second prize in the Dutch Prix de Rome in the mid 1990s, the two decided not to establish their own office as was customary, but instead to become partners at de Architekten Cie. in Amsterdam. From one day to the next, they went from being fledgling architects to co-directors of a major architectural firm. Medic and Puljiz often follow a similarly individual path in their designs. Different Repetitions shows in words and images the versatility but most of all their cohesion, from the Acanthus office building in Amsterdam to the Cultural Centre in Tianjin, China.
The Conference of the Tongues offers a series of startling reflections on fundamental questions of translation. It throws new light on familiar problems and opens up some radically different avenues of thought. It engages with value conflicts in translation and the social accountability of translators, and turns the old issue of equivalence inside out. Drawing on a wealth of contemporary and historical examples, the book teases out the translator's subject-position in translations, makes notions of intertextuality and irony serviceable for translation studies, tries to think translation without transformation, and uses a controversial sociological model to cast a cold eye on the entire world of translating. This is a highly interdisciplinary study that remains aware of the importance of theoretical paradigms as it brings concepts from international law, social systems theory and even theology to bear on translation. Self-reference is a recurrent theme. The book invites us to read translations for what they can tell us about translating and about translators' own perceptions of their role. The argument throughout is for more self-reflexive translation studies.
We always hear about the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet, but do we really know what Mediterranean foods to cook or eat? When asked that question, most people may tick off olive oil, olives, walnuts, vegetables, and fruits, but most have little idea how to incorporate these items into a regular diet. Dr. Theo Christodoulakis, a practicing physician in Arizona with a doctorate in naturopathic medicine, explains what a Mediterranean diet is and why those who embrace it enjoy reduced incidents of cardiovascular and chronic diseases-even if they consume increased amounts of fat and animal proteins. Filled with tasty recipes and practical advice, this handbook will help you live a longer and healthier life by enjoying healthy and flavorsome foods.
