The Report presents an analysis of the diffusion and adoption of technology, particularly ICT in the region and its impact on overall economic growth, employment, poverty reduction, as well the provision of health and education services in the region. The report draws from several interesting case studies particularly from India and Bangladesh that illustrate how ICT is being used innovatively to improve the efficiency and transparency in the delivery of public services. The Report however reiterates that technology by itself does not result in wonders. It has to be accompanied with an educated and skilled population as well as basic infrastructure.
The Karachi City Diagnostic attempts to present detailed data on the economy, livability and key urban services of the city. It also proposes pathways towards the transformation of Karachi into a more livable, inclusive and economically competitive city by outlining and prioritizing key policy actions.
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has awarded the ESCAP Human Resources Development (HRD) Award in almost every year since 1990. The award recognizes exceptional contributions made in the area of human resources development. The theme of the ESCAP HDR Award for 2001 was Empowering the Rural Poor through HRD. This document contains six of the most innovative papers submitted for the award.
