During the nineteenth century in Rome, three generations of the Castellani family created what they called “Italian archaeological jewelry,” which was inspired by the precious Etruscan, Roman, Greek, and Byzantine antiquities being excavated at the time. The Castellani jewelry consisted of finely wrought gold that was often combined with delicate and colorful mosaics, carved gemstones, or enamel. This magnificent book is the first to display and discuss the jewelry and the family behind it. International scholars discuss the life and work of the Castellani, revealing the wide-ranging aspects of the family’s artistic and cultural activities. They describe the making and marketing of the jewelry, the survey collection of all periods of Italian jewelry on display in the Castellani’s palatial store, and the Castellani’s activities in the trade of antiquities, as they sponsored excavations, and restored, dealt, and exhibited antiques. In the world of modern art, the idea of appropriation, or the conscious manipulation of the recognised world of another artist, has long been accepted as a legitimate strategy in criticism of the tradition of art authorship, challenging the context of viewing contemporary work and the manipulation of omnipresent media images. The world of art itself is fair game to be pillaged or mined in the production of new art, but there is almost no recognised equivalent aesthetic in architecture. An international workshop on the Cult Statue of a Goddess was held at the Getty Villa on May 9, 2007. Sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Museum, it brought together distinguished speakers from Italy, New Zealand, and the United States as well as observers from the Sicilian Regional Ministry of Culture and Environmental Heritage, the Archaeological Institute of America, and colleagues from across the Getty. The topics addressed comprise pseudo-acrolithic sculpture in Archaic and Classical Greece, art-historical observations about the Cult Statue, petrographic and micropalaeontological data about the statue, survey of soil residues from the statue, and pollen analysis of those soil residues. The research undertaken and the information provided by this group will help better to determine the Cult Statue's ancient origins. The results of this workshop were a part of the Getty Museum's final stages of research before the statue was sent to Italy in 2011.
