Stafford, nestled in the hills of Northeastern Connecticut, was settled in 1719. Originally an agrarian community, the town has a diverse history. The discovery of iron ore led to a thriving iron industry that produced various items, including cannons and shot for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. The mineral springs, long known to the Native Americans, became a destination location, attracting visitors such as John Adams, future president of the United States. Stafford hosted one of the earliest agricultural fairs in the state, which ran until 1969. The biggest influence on the town was the introduction of the textile industry in the early 19th century. As immigrants of many ethnicities came to town to work, Stafford experienced unprecedented growth and the population diversified. Stafford's mills became major contributors to the country's textile industry, particularly wool manufacturing.
As Houston steadily grew in the early 20th century, the commercial and civic elite focused on the community's industrial expansion and economic prosperity. Aviation played a significant role in that aspiration. With the earliest birdmen of the skies offering a suggestion of the economic potential of flight, Houston-area policymakers solicited and welcomed military aviation, first at Ellington Field and later on Galveston Island. As early as the 1920s, the burgeoning Houston energy industry realized the value and utility of aircraft as business tools. Aircraft were uniquely capable of quickly traversing the great distances that separated the oil fields from the centers of commerce and industry, and their use made Houston an epicenter for modern business aviation. Between World War I and World War II, the federal post office subsidized the development of commercial passenger service while the city fathers provided the necessary infrastructure through the funding and establishment of the Houston Municipal Airport. The triptych of business, commercial, and military aviation would come to define Houston's aviation lineage.
Forced to flee the brutal pogroms of Europe, Jewish immigrants sought refuge in the beauty of Boston's North Shore. Based on courthouse records--primarily marriage bonds, licenses, ministers' returns, and marriage registers--the combined lists, which are fully indexed, contain references to approximately 50,000 persons!
Willington, incorporated in 1727, is located in Connecticut's northeast corner, providing easy access to Hartford, Connecticut, and Boston, Massachusetts. With steep hills and mineral-laden soil, Willington proved to be a challenging terrain for early farmers trying to grow crops. Instead, they came to rely on a variety of animals, which they sold in markets as far away as New York City. Although the area was rural in nature, button, thread, and glass industries all existed in Willington; residents claim Willington as the place where America's first spool of thread was made. Today, businesses include art galleries, gift shops, and independent restaurants. Through photographs, Willington captures how a small community that once had 11 one-room schoolhouses has managed to grow into a modern community with two schools for students from kindergarten through eighth grade all while maintaining elements of its original historic charm. This charm can be seen in the form of 18th- and 19th-century homes that dot Willington's quintessential country roads.
