Beginning in the late 1970s and early 1980s, significant numbers of Haitian immigrants began to arrive and settle in Miami. Overcoming some of the most foreboding obstacles ever to face immigrants in America, they have diversified socioeconomically. Together, they have made South Florida home to the largest population of native-born Haitians and diasporic Haitians outside of the Caribbean and one of the most significant Caribbean immigrant communities in the world. Religion has played a central role in making all of this happen. Crossing the Water and Keeping the Faith is a historical and ethnographic study of Haitian religion in immigrant communities, based on fieldwork in both Miami and Haiti, as well as extensive archival research. Where many studies of Haitian religion limit themselves to one faith, Rey and Stepick explore Catholicism, Protestantism, and Vodou in conversation with one another, suggesting that despite the differences between these practices, the three faiths ultimately create a sense of unity, fulfillment, and self-worth in Haitian communities. This meticulously researched and vibrantly written book contributes to the growing body of literature on religion among new immigrants. Terry Rey is Associate Professor of Religion at Temple University. He is the coeditor (with Alex Stepick and Sarah Mahler) of Churches and Charity in the Immigrant City: Religion, Immigration, and Civic Engagement in Miami. Alex Stepick is Professor of Sociology at Portland State University and Professor of Global and Sociocultural Studies at Florida International University. But there are remarkable differences in how these religious satirists express their outrage.The changing costumes of religious satirists fit their times. The earthy coarse language of Martin Luther and Sir Thomas More during the carnival spirit of the late medieval period was refined with the enlightened wit of Alexander Pope. The sacrilege of Monty Python does not translate well to the ironic voices of Soren Kierkegaard. The religious satirist does not even need to be part of the community of faith. All he needs is an eye and ear for the folly and chicanery of religious poseurs. To follow the paths of the satirist, writes Lindvall, is to encounter the odd and peculiar treasures who are God’s mouthpieces. In God Mocks, he offers an engaging look at their religious use of humor toward moral ends.

Honest Weight is the 20th century story of Toledo Scale, beginning with their fight in the first decade for weights and measures laws to outlaw dishonest scales. In narrative form, it tells the living history of the company, beginning with the founder after he was dramatically fired by National Cash Register Company. Henry Theobald then started a scale and cash register company to compete with his old boss, the legendary John Patterson of NCR. It’s the story of the inventors, leaders, craftsmen and technical breakthroughs, beginning in the first year of the 20th century up to current times. Included is the story of the innovative sales techniques developed by Theobald that led to tight-fisted merchants being willing to spend four and five times as much for a Toledo “No Springs—Honest Weight” scale than for the scale it replaced. This led to Toledo becoming the best known scale brand in the nation. It includes the story of how a plastic came to be developed for Toledo Scale under the leadership of the company’s second president Hubert Bennett that led him to establish a separate, wholly owned company. This company, Plaskon, became the largest plastic company in the United States for a brief time. It tells of Toledo Scale’s World War II contributions in which the company played a top-secret part in the production of the Norden bombsight and the atomic bomb. The story includes quotations from both retired company executives and current employees. It includes information obtained from an unpublished factual manuscript covering the company’s first 50 years, other company archives and the Toledo Blade. A dozen historical photos are displayed, which include the first DeVilbiss computing scale, a Toledo Cash Register, and a Phinney scale which was the first patented computing scale. A few Phinney scales were manufactured in 1870. Since Toledo Scale couldn’t locate one to prove they were actually manufactured, they lost a huge lawsuit to Dayton Scale that almost broke the company. Also shown is a photo of Norman Bel Geddes’ 1929-30 radical designs of a new factory and plant campus for Toledo Scale, never built due to the depression. The story includes the transition to electronic scales begun by the company’s third president Harris McIntosh. This transition was completed in the final quarter of the century. And finally, the human story that resulted from the evolution of several different ownership’s is told, until just a few years ago, Toledo Scale disappeared as a separate brand and was merged into Mettler-Toledo, Inc.

In 2007 Terry Crawford-Browne published the explosive Eye On The Money. It was primarily an account of the international banking sanctions campaign against apartheid during the 1980s, but also dealt with the early stages of the now well-documented South African arms deal scandal. Eye On The Diamonds is a sequel to the earlier book and provides updated information on the uncovering of the scandal. Its purpose is to keep the arms deal saga and the venality of the war business in public focus. In 2008 Crawford-Browne was asked to lead a public interest application to the South African Constitutional Court after huge volumes of evidence confirmed how BAE and other arms companies paid massive bribes to politically well-connected members of the African National Congress - the so-called 'black diamonds' - to secure their contracts. His application forced President Jacob Zuma's reluctant appointment in October 2011 of a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the scandal. Eye On The Diamonds' focus on diamonds links the colonial and apartheid histories of South Africa with the close histories of Israel and Palestine. It demonstrates how De Beers, the South African originated company which dominated the diamond cartel for more than a century is fast losing control to far more ruthless Israeli players. Crawford-Browne suggests that the diamond trade, which is critical to the twenty-first century war business, makes every diamond a 'blood diamond'. Blood diamonds provide the ultimate money laundering opportunity for organised crime, while the Israeli war business thwarts efforts at peaceful resolution of conflict. Israel itself has become a 'promised land' for organised crime where assassinations, money laundering and other criminal activities are justified in the 'national interest'. Crawford-Browne shows in this well-researched and hard-hitting book that the international war business and the corruption it unleashes is completely out of control.

Allen Curnow (1911–2001) was at the time of his death regarded as one of the greatest of all poets writing in English.
