In this laugh-out-loud funny and inspiring autobiography, one of Hollywood’s best-loved comediennes muses about movies, men, motherhood, and MS In a book that is at once Hollywood hilarious and personally moving, Teri Garr, star of such classic films as Young Frankenstein, Oh God!, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Mr. Mom, and Tootsie, for which she received an Academy Award nomination, writes about her life with the same wit and warmth that have won the hearts of fans for over three decades. From sipping Cokes with Elvis Presley to hangin’ with the Beatles; from her secrets to succeeding in Hollywood without losing her sanity, to dealing with the fear, anxiety, and denial of being plagued by mysterious physical problems that eluded diagnosis for over twenty years—the insights in Speedbumps, while always couched in Garr’s trademark humor, are honest, heartfelt, and often profound. BACKCOVER: “The driven comedian tells (almost) all…[and] she’s as dizzily funny as ever.” —Entertainment Weekly “Garr sticks to the truth whether it’s hysterically funny, or, at times, heart wrenching. Read this book, it’s a lesson in courage.” —Mel Brooks
Receiving a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, or some other brain-related illness is devastating. It feels like life, as you know it, is over, and you are powerless to do anything about it. Your future may seem like nothing but a long black tunnel of decreasing cognitive function, declining mobility, depression, and premature death. Even your physician may share this gloomy view. The good news is, you have more control over your brain health than you think! With the exception of cancer, many brain illnesses can be reversed through a combination of diet, exercise, supplements, proper sleep, avoiding and removing toxins from the body, and taking an epigenetic (turning good genes on and not-so-good genes off) approach to your healing. Several “jump start” techniques, including oxygen therapy, microbiota therapy (Gut Flora Transplant or GFT), photobiomodulation therapy (PMT), venous angioplasty, and even cannabis can enhance your recovery in as little as a few weeks. Never before have we had so many safe approaches with little or no side effects. Best of all, these treatments are now available on almost every continent, including Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America. It is time we let go of our paternalistic concept that “doctor knows best.” This book describes all the above treatments and more, providing a roadmap to enhance your brain recovery. You may not feel like it right now, but you can win the brain game, and this book can show you how!

Recent history suggests the United States is within reach of its first woman president. This book examines the media experiences of women political pioneers who helped pave the way to the breaking of the glass ceiling. It analyzes newspaper treatment of four pioneering politicians between the 1870s and 2000s and explores how media discourse of women politicians has and hasn’t changed over 150 years. The women featured are Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president; Jeannette Rankin, the first woman elected to Congress; Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman to receive a presidential nomination at a major party’s convention; and Sarah Palin, the first Republican woman vice presidential candidate. The social, political, and journalistic cultures of each woman’s era are also explored to provide context for the women’s media coverage. The findings illustrate that the press has used a variety of discursive strategies to delegitimize the candidacies of women politicians throughout history, which might have contributed to negative voter attitudes toward women in politics. Gendered stereotypes, gendered news frames, and double binds utilized in news coverage served to protect a male-dominated status quo. Yet a significant finding in Palin’s coverage indicates that gender bias in news coverage is increasingly facing criticism, suggesting the tide may finally be turning in favor of more equalized discourse.
