The last half century of international educational development has generated many positive accomplishments, including school access expansion and curriculum quality improvement. However, it has not produced sustainable or comprehensive results, mainly because key institutions and local culture are frequently ignored. Simultaneous to the production of these mixed results in developing countries, education scholars and faculties of education in wealthier countries have pursued an agenda of professionalization of the educational occupations—through higher qualification requirements, more stringent entry standards, and explicit evidence to guide practice. Furthermore, higher education internationalization has increased its scope and expanded its volume. Yet in these three areas—educational development, educational professionalization, and higher education internationalization—there has rarely been any convergence. This book makes a case for this vital union.

As sergeant major for a battalion of 800 men, it was Ted Arthur's job to see them through this jungle hell and get them back home again. Command Sergeant Major Ted G. He advances what he believes is a commonsensical notion: a state's domestic identity has an enormous effect on its international policies. Hopf argues that foreign policy elites are inextricably bound to their own societies; in order to understand other states, they must first understand themselves. To comprehend Russian and Soviet foreign policy, "it is just as important to read what is being consumed on the Moscow subway as it is to conduct research in the Foreign Ministry archives," the author says.Hopf recreates the major currents in Russian/Soviet identity, reconstructing the "identity topographies" of two profoundly important years, 1955 and 1999. To provide insights about how Russians made sense of themselves in the post-Stalinist and late Yeltsin periods, he not only uses daily newspapers and official discourse, but also delves into works intended for mass consumption--popular novels, film reviews, ethnographic journals, high school textbooks, and memoirs. Ted Van Dyk, a shrewd veteran of countless national political and policy fights, casts fresh light on many of the leading personalities and watershed events of American politics since JFK. He was a Pentagon intelligence analyst during the Berlin Crisis of 1961 and an aide to Jean Monnet and other leaders of the European movement before serving at the Johnson White House as Vice President Humphrey’s senior advisor and alter ego. In 2001 the Bellingham, Washington, native returned to the Northwest to write a regular editorial-page column for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Van Dyk’s memoirs contain many previously untold stories from an historic period of national politics, portray brilliant and not-so-brilliant leaders and ideas, and also illuminate politics’ darker side.
