To Bear Witness is a series of essays plus other material having to do mainly with persons no longer living who have left an indelible imprint on the life of the writer, though he has known most of themonly through their work. They include among others Martha Graham, Ruth Draper, Isadora Duncan, Louis Horst, Shakespeare, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Maurice Ravel. Margaret Beals, Meredith Monk and John Devers, In all of the selections aspects of their life and output are describeddiscussedcommented upon. Many are an act of memory. Three of them contain extensive quotations. But every one of them has been done in homage out of deep appreciation, respectand love.
Winterreise is a collection of stories, theatre pieces and poems most of them reflecting the author's background, experience, and gay sensibility and ranging all the way from serious narratives to off the wall humor. However with but a few exceptions they are not autobiographical. Included among them are a few excerpts from larger works.
TRIPTYCH-a Mystery (Part 1-The Painting) deals with a well known biblical figure during several incarnations through which he finally achieves complete self awareness and self-acceptance. It is a self contained novel within a larger three part structure including Part 2 (Preliminary Studies) and Part 3 (Afterimages), which though formally related to Part -and dealing with the creative process, but telling their own stories-are not printed here. Part 1-The Painting is written in its own three part structure and is in the form of a mystery story-to which the word, "mystery," is to be applied in more than one definition: To begin with it is not a "Whodunit?" but "Whoisit?" And though the answer to this question should become apparent by halfway through the work, the final denouement can be perceived as either diabolical or holy-or both-depending upon the reader's point of view.

Like Ted Dalbottens previous books, Winterreise and Triptych a Mystery (Part I, The Painting) which among other material dealt with various aspects of both the performing and non performing arts, the present volume aside from its examination of the human condition concerns itself particularly with musical matters, though not only performing issues. Since music has been the predominant activity of the author now in his eighty fourth year it was almost inevitable he would eventually seek to explore this aspect of his life in some extended fictional form and in some depth. Aside from his work as both dance and vocal accompanist, for the last twenty four years he has been involved in a small group calling themselves Two Piano- Eight, which meet regularly and of which he is one of the founding members. Their activity is reading through arrangements of mainly orchestral and chamber works for two pianos, eight hands to which he has contributed over seventy five of his own transcriptions of both large and smaller works.
