Never in its long history has the South provided an entirely comfortable home for the intellectual. In this thought-provoking contribution to the field of southern studies, Tara Powell considers the evolving ways that major post--World War II southern writers have portrayed intellectuals -- from Flannery O'Connor's ironic view of "interleckchuls" to Gail Godwin's southerners striving to feel at home in the academic world. Although Walker Percy, like his fellow Catholic writer O'Connor, explicitly rejected the intellectual label for himself, he nonetheless introduced the modern novel of ideas to southern letters, Powell shows, by placing sympathetic, non-caricatured intellectuals at the center of his influential works. North Carolinians Doris Betts and her student Tim McLaurin made their living teaching literature and creative writing in academia, and Betts's fiction often includes dislocated academics while McLaurin's superb memoirs, often funny, frequently point up the limitations of the mind as opposed to the heart and the spirit. Examining works by Ernest Gaines, Alice Walker, and Randall Kenan, Powell traces the evolution of the black American literacy narrative from a stress on the post-Emancipation conviction, which saw formal education as an essential means of resisting oppression, to the growing suspicion in the post--civil rights era of literacy acts that may estrange educated blacks from the larger black community. Powell concludes with Godwin, who embraces university life in her fiction as she explores what it means to be a southern female intellectual in the modern world -- a world in which all those markers inscribe isolation.

This atlas is the result of research involving over 3,000 patients consecutively recruited since 2004. Clinical practice gives the opportunity to observe many more Aβ axonal lesions (axonotmesis) than transections (neurotmesis), consequently the mapped hypo aesthetic territories are partial. Therefore, the authors define for each cutaneous nerve branch, the autonomous territory and the boundary markers of the largest territory of cutaneous origin. Each anatomical chart of a cutaneous branch is the superposition of tens, even hundreds of observations seen in clinical practice – based on 3,133 maps of observed cutaneous hypoaesthetic territories. The data collected has also been cross-referenced with that published in nearly 100 other anatomy books. This 1st English edition – based on the 3rd French edition published by Sauramps Medical – illustrates the usefulness of anatomical knowledge for clinical practice. More precisely, it seeks to demonstrate how these topographic elements can offer valuable support, both for the clinical anamnesis, and for the clinical examination of neuropathic pain patients. This atlas is at the crossroads between the medical and rehabilitation disciplines. Accordingly, it addresses the needs of medical doctors, from GPs to specialists, and of pain therapists, and offers a valuable asset for all health professionals who are dedicated to the management of pain and associated problems.

It is organized through twelve mantras for higher education in this interregnum, and offers new, radical, edgy and passionate methodologies, epistemologies and ontologies for a University sector searching for a purpose. This is a feminist book which targets a feminist audience, both inside and outside higher education. It presents a clear focus on how this Peterson moment can be managed and challenged, when in future such academics deploy social media in this way. This book is also a part of higher education studies, exploring the role of the public / critical / dissenting / organic intellectual in debates about the political economy, identity/politics and leadership. A question of our time – through a climate emergency, a pandemic and polarized politics – is why Professor Jordan Peterson gained profile and notoriety. The Jordan Peterson moment commenced in September 2016 with his YouTube video, “Professor against political correctness,” and concluded with his debate with Slavoj Zizek on April 19, 2019. From this moment, his credibility was dented, if not destroyed. Jordan Peterson infused scholarly debates with Punch and Judy extremism and misunderstandings.
