This book presents critical perspectives on the impacts of globalization in Africa with particular reference to the crisis of development and governance, the crisis of peace and security, and the environmental crisis. It explores both global and local factors that exacerbate these crises, and seeks solutions to these challenges. With a strong slant on African experience and perspectives, the book reveals that globalization has presented Africa with both challenges and opportunities for governance and existence in an increasingly inter-connected planet.
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2011 in the subject Pedagogy - Higher Education, grade: 95%, Webster University (Sarasota), course: MKT5000, language: English, abstract: Because of a troubled economy that is showing no signs of improvement, the cost of a college education is experiencing questioning. Some may believe that it is a much better solution to take those four years and start working their way up because experience is key. Others claim that there are statistics to back that the earnings of a college graduate are substantially higher than one with a high school diploma. That putting in the work, and the investment will be worth it over time. However, with the economy showing no sign of improvement, along with a very low employment rate, the number of individuals with an undergraduate degree is becoming very over-saturated. The search for a job is becoming much more barbaric in attempt to start a life, and paying off the long-term debt associated with one’s education. This survey, evaluates how important a college education is perceived in today’s society. The participants have been both male and female from different ages, educational levels, income levels, and states. A total of 24 participants responded to this survey, however there was an expected goal of 50. The results that have been gathered may be shocking to some, and no surprise to others.
Essay aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich VWL - Fallstudien, Länderstudien, Webster University, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: George Jenkins found Publix Super Markets in 1930 (“About Publix”, n.d.). He decided to take a risk at becoming an entrepreneur, and walked away from the security of a wonderful job. His store “set not only a new precedent for cleanliness and beauty, but also the Publix standard for employee relations” (“About Publix”, n.d.). He had a very friendly persona, and was known to the employees as “Mr. George” (“About Publix”, n.d.). Within the first four years, gross annuals sales went from $100,000 to $120,000 by 1934 (“About Publix”, n.d.). George Jenkins stayed ahead of his competitors by traveling the country to seek out products to send back to his store (“About Publix”, n.d.). This also provided him ideas on ways that he could improve upon his store to maintain a competitive edge. In 1940, George’ s desire to be the best seemed almost obtainable. He mortgaged his orange grove, and put the capital toward building Florida’s first supermarket, introducing technologies yet to be seen in this industry.

This book provides an important critical analysis of the autobiographies of nine major leaders of national liberation movements in Africa. By examining their self-narratives, we can better understand how decolonisation unfolded and how activist-politicians sought to immortalise their roles for posterity. Focusing on the autobiographies of Peter Abrahams, Albert Luthuli, Ruth First and Nelson Mandela (South Africa), Nnamdi Azikiwe (Nigeria), Kenneth Kaunda (Zambia), George Mwase (Malawi), Kwame Nkrumah (Ghana), Maurice Nyagumbo (Zimbabwe), and Oginga Odinga (Kenya), the book uncovers the social and cultural forces which galvanized the anti-colonial resistance movement in African societies. In particular, the book explores the disdain for foreign domination, economic exploitation and cultural imperialism. It delves into themes of African cultural sovereignty before the colonial encounter, the disruptive presence of colonialism, the nationalist ferment against European imperial domination, the achievement of political autonomy by African nation-states and the corpus of contradictions which attended postcolonial becoming. With important insights on how these key historical figures navigated the process of self-determining nationhood in Africa, this book will be of interest to researchers of African literature, history, and politics.

Collectively, the essays brought together in this book represent a discursive confluence on Nollywood as a local film culture with a global character, aspiration and reach. The governing concern of the book is that texts, including film texts, are animated by a particular sociology and anthropology which gives them concrete existence and meaning. The book argues that Nollywood, the Nigerian video film text, is deeply rooted in the sub-soil of its social and cultural milieux. Nollywood is therefore, engaged in the relentless negotiation and re-negotiation of the everyday lives of the people against the backdrop of their cultural traditions, social contradictions and the politics of their ethnic/national identity, longing and belonging. The essays weave an intricate and delicate argument about the critical role of Nollywood to the idea of nationhood and the logic of its narration with implications for language, politics and culture in Africa. The book is a valuable addition to the critical discourse on the important place of film and cinema studies in national engineering processes.
Various forms of academic co-operation criss-cross the modern university system in a bewildering number of ways, from the open exchange of ideas and knowledge, to the sharing of research results, and frank discussions about research challenges. Embedded in these scholarly networks is the question of whether a global template for the management of both higher education and national research organisations is necessary, and if so, must institutions slavishly follow the high-flown language of the global knowledge society or risk falling behind in the ubiquitous university ranking system? Or are there alternatives that can achieve a better, more ethically inclined, world? Basing their observations on their own experiences, an interesting mix of seasoned scholars and new voices from southern Africa and the Nordic region offer critical perspectives on issues of inter- and cross-regional academic co-operation. Several of the chapters also touch on the evolution of the higher education sector in the two regions. An absorbing and intelligent study, this book will be invaluable for anyone interested in the strategies scholars are using to adapt to the interconnectedness of the modern world. It offers fresh insights into how academics are attempting to protect the spaces in which they can freely and openly debate the challenges they face, while aiming to transform higher education, and foster scholarly collaboration. The Southern African-Nordic Centre (SANORD) is a partnership of higher education institutions from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe. SANORDs primary aim is to promote multilateral research co-operation on matters of importance to the development of both regions. Our activities are based on the values of democracy, equity, and mutually beneficial academic engagement.
This book essentially negotiates African literature as a veritable site of artistic and cultural production and situates it within the dynamic of postcolonial cultural politics. It critically evaluates African literature as a contour of cultural contestation with the imperial politics of knowledge production about others and as an ideological strategy for knowing them. The book’s main contribution to the critical discourse on African literature and culture inheres in the fact that politics constitutes the enduring concern of society as it re/shapes and over-determines discourses which have continued to remain crucial to societal engineering. It, however, imagines the discursive existence as necessary for the evolving of a dynamic African literary tradition with an abiding fidelity to the verities of history. The book is useful for literary scholars, historians, critics, experts and students of postcolonial/cultural studies as well as general readership interested in African studies.
Since the late 1980s the changing dynamic of global development has driven the tide of democratic expansion in the developing world. In Africa, western donors have sought to impose 'neo-liberal' visions of socio-economic and political institution-building, spreading political reforms and economic liberalisation with far-reaching consequences. Associated with external interventions, but also sometimes conflicting with them, are internal protests against authoritarianism, which have problematically reinforced and/or undermined the donor agenda for democratic reform. Here, Usman Tar questions the assumption that Africa was lacking the essential components for a spontaneous transition to democracy. He explores the dynamic, but contradictory, links between external and internal dimensions of neo-liberal democratic expansion in Africa, focusing on Nigeria. Tar dissects the struggles for democracy, and for democratic policy and practice in a country with rich economic potential but a troubled political dispensation.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2013 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A+, Webster University, course: BUSN 6120-2R, language: English, abstract: When reflecting on technology, and the progress that we have made in the last ten years, it is hard to imagine where we would be today without it. We as a society have integrated technology into our lives every single day. A large part of this is due to the ability to connect to the world with our fingertips whenever and wherever we may be. Whether we are surfing the web, listening to music, face timing with our friends and or loved ones, or simply checking in on our social networks. Technology has become a norm and a hygiene factor of our society that most of us could not live without. Apple Inc. and its former CEO, Steve Jobs deserve a substantial amount of credit for these changes. They have led the way in innovation, user friendliness, and ascetically pleasing products that many have tried to contend with and have had no success. Apple Inc. has created a brand so powerful, that their products themselves have become fashionable and almost a never-ending trend. Their brand loyalty is so deep that consumers will stand in lines for not hours but, days awaiting the release of the newest product, even if the changes that are made to it are minimal. They are the first and only company to create a line of products that seamlessly integrate together, and are accessible anywhere with a cellphone signal. However, many question the company’s viability due to the recent passing of former CEO Steve Jobs. Will Apple Inc. be able to continue in its predecessor’s footsteps? Or will Apple Inc. dwindle away like last years fashion trend? This paper will examine Apple Inc. using a SWOT Analysis, and will bring to light Apple Inc. areas of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

If we take ads as a metaphor of psychoanalysis, the consumer who buys the product or the brand as represented in the ads, has set out on a fantastic journey, in a sense. Ads try to make the journey of the consumer a journey to the unconscious mind as much as possible, with phase and stages of the product such as presentation, store layout, and all other launching activities, like the stages that a patient goes through in the treatment process in clinical psychology. Almost every time it succeeds. Moreover, this journey is as effective as the complexes or neuroses that Freud stated; The purchased product and brand definitely changes us. This is a change in dreams. Actually, this is usually the reason to go shopping: To create a new style, a new trend, and even to climb the social ladder. The product will change our lives. This is often the slogan written on the box. Even with a higher expectation, we want the product to change not only our lives but also us, ourselves. This is often clearly written on the package, and a completely new "you" is promised after several uses. The book in your hand, Ads That Touch Psychopathology takes a look at a global phenomenon occurring between advertisement and human psyche with a specific focus on a local example, productions in the Republic of Turkey at the start of the millennium. Because the human mind works similarly regardless of geography and today's economy works the same in almost every place globally, I think that readers from different countries will not be unfamiliar with the examples given in the book and sometimes even see their daily lives just like in a mirror. Familiar to such an extent that in many of the examples the average reader around the world will be feeling as if they see the consumer psyche out of a mirror reflected in this book. This will give the reader an opportunity to see how much global society functions the same in any place. After all, although we may, more or less, be from different geographies, cultures, and even political systems, we belong to the same economic life.

This Discussion Paper critically examines the pivotal role religion plays in Nigerian politics, particularly as it relates to the ways Islamic and Christian identities have been manipulated by competing political elites in their struggle for power. It provides a concise but well-informed history of the evolution of the religious factor in politics and its adverse implications for Nigeria's democracy. Its point of departure is a critique of the notion of a secular Nigerian state (as prescribed by the constitution), which shows how governments and politicians have taken advantage of constitutional loopholes and used state resources to foster the politicisation of religion, with serious consequences for society at large. Some of the adverse consequences identified include religious conflict, political instability, insecurity and the undermining of the country's democracy and development.
