This book is about a family finding themselves in a desperate situation after the loss of their mother. With help from caring individuals, a home was found for the children at the Methodist Children's Home in Winston - Salem, NC. "Pop" Woosley and his dedicated and understanding care givers provided the education and leadership that directed the children toward an opportunity for a better life. The life of the boy, Fred Tanner, and what his physical and emotional experiences were well documented as he describes the daily life at this home where he lived for 16 years. In some instances, living in an orphanage is much better than living in some family situations. The structured living environment was so designed that one home mother could manage the behavior of 30 boys. The boys had the opportunity to get into boyhood mischief, and that they did! Boys had their own understanding of "orphan humor." Some boys lived the life that would rival Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer while some boys were mellow and studious. Through sports, work responsibility, scouting and some social events the boys were mellowed somewhat into responsible young boys. Hard work and discipline were a matter of fact and became the life habits of most of that were raised at this home. Opportunity for further education was made available through work programs and college assistance to those that wished to attend. Most all boys served a tour in the military. Children and their parents, many in not much better situations than we were, gave their pennies and nickles so that we could have a pair of shoes or a decent set of clothes. This was most humiliating. Other people of means were kind enough to see the need of over four hundred children.

Following a decade-long hunt, he was captured and acquitted of killing a former Texas Ranger. After this near brush with prison or execution, he headed for South America, where he gained fame as the leading Gringo rustler. It wasn’t until the 1940s that Musgrave’s age and poor health brought an end to a criminal career that had spanned two continents and two centuries. Incorporating previously unknown facts about the career of this frontier outlaw, the Tanners thoroughly document Musgrave’s half-century of crime, from his childhood in the Texas brush country to his final days in Paraguay.

The transition from adolescence to adulthood has undergone significant changes in recent decades. Unlike a half century ago, when young people in industrialized countries moved from adolescence into young adulthood in relatively short order at around age 20, now the decade from the late teens to the late twenties is seen as an extended time of self-focused exploration and education in pursuit of optimally fulfilling relationships and careers. Recognition of this new period is stronger than ever, but an important question remains: should emerging adulthood be considered a developmental stage, or a process? In Debating Emerging Adulthood: Stage or Process? two pairs of developmental psychologists take sides in a debate that is central to the very concept of emerging adulthood. Arnett and Tanner argue that as young people around the world share demographic similarities, such as longer education and later marriage, the years between the ages 18 and 25 are best understood as entailing a new life stage. However, because the experiences of emerging adults worldwide vary according to cultural context, educational attainment, and social class, these two scholars suggest that there may not be one but many different emerging adulthoods. An important issue for this burgeoning area of inquiry is to explore and describe this variation. In contrast, Hendry and Kloep assert that stage theories have never been able to explain individual transitions across the life course; in their view, stage theories-including the theory of emerging adulthood-ought to be abolished altogether, and explanations found for the processes and mechanisms that govern human change at any age.
