In Angola all these are manifest, yet the authors fell in love with the country, with the wonderful people, the children and the women, whose daily struggle for survival arouses both sympathy and admiration, with Angola’s enchanting natural beauty, mysterious cultures, rare biodiversity and fiery sunsets over an endless ocean. For many years a bloody war of independence raged and, as soon at it ended, the country was thrown into a terrible civil war, during the height of the Cold War. Tamar Golan was born in Haifa and is a former member of Kibbutz Lahav in southern Israel. She first visited Africa in 1961 with her husband Avihu, lecturing at the Agricultural College of Ethiopia in Harar for the Israeli Foreign Office Department for International Co-operation. Avihu was killed there. In 1964 she went to New York, where she completed a PhD in Law and Government at Columbia University, specializing in Africa. From 1967, she worked as a journalist for the BBC’s African Service, the Israeli daily, Ma’ariv and the Israeli Army radio station, reporting from Africa, the Arab states and Paris. In 1994, Tamar was appointed Israeli ambassador to Angola. After her term, she later returned to Angola as a United Nations expert, to assist in establishing a National Commission for Landmine Action, annexed to the Angolan presidency. She returned to Israel in 2002 and now lectures on African Affairs at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. Tamar has written two books: Black White; White Black (MOD Publishers, 1986) and, with Amnon Dankner, Africa, Africa (Ma’ariv Publishers, 1988). Tamar Ron was born and raised in Jerusalem. She has a BSc Biology and an MSc in Environmental Biology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. From 1992–2000 she worked as the wildlife ecologist for the Nature Reserves Authority of Israel. In 1998, at the behest of the Angolan Ministry of Environment, she represented the Israeli Foreign Office Department for International Co-operation in Angola. Through NORAD, the Norwegian agency, she was appointed as UNDP-Angola Chief Technical Adviser on Biodiversity Conservation. She returned to Israel in 2005 where she continues her work in conservation. She recently proposed a framework for transfrontier conservation areas (TFCAs) in southern Africa, now adopted by regional governments, SADC, the Southern African Development Community.

In Spoiling the Stories, Tamar Merin presents the as yet untold story of the rise of prose by Israeli women, while further exploring and expanding the gendered models of literary influence in modern Hebrew literature. The theoretical idea upon which this book is based is that of intersexual dialogue, a term that refers to the various literary strategies employed by Israeli female fiction writers expressing their voice within a male-dominated and (still) inherently Oedipal literary tradition. Spoiling the Stories focuses on intersexual dialogue as it evolved in the first three decades after the establishment of the state of Israel in the works of Yehudit Hendel, Amalia Kahana Carmon, and Rachel Eytan. According to Merin, these three women writers were the most important in the history of modern Hebrew literature: each was a significant participant in the poetic development of her time.

This book discusses the predicament of the Israeli peace movement, which, paradoxically, following the launching of the Oslo peace process between Israel and the Palestinians in 1993, experienced a prolonged, fatal decline in membership, activity, political significance, and media visibility. After presenting the regional and national background to the launching of the peace process and a short history of Israeli peace activism, the book focuses on external and internal processes and interactions experienced by the peace movement, after some basic postulates of its agenda were actually, although never explicitly, embraced by the Rabin government. The book concludes that, despite its organizational decline and the zero credit given to it by the policy makers, in retrospect it appears that the movement contributed significantly to the integration of new ideas for possible solutions to the Middle East conflict in the Israeli mainstream political discourse.

A nostalgic interest in the past is a well-recognized feature of fast-changing, contemporary societies. It finds its expression in a variety of history-making practices of which the establishment of local heritage museums is a major manifestation in many parts of the world today. The state of Israel and the Palestinian nation are at a monumental juncture in their histories. In Milk and Honey, Tamar Novick writes a revolutionary environmental history of the state that centers on the intersection of technology and religion in modern Israel/Palestine. Focusing on animals and the management of their production and reproduction across three political regimes—the late-Ottoman rule, British rule, and the early Israeli state—Novick draws attention to the ways in which settlers and state experts used agricultural technology to recreate a biblical idea of past plenitude, literally a “land flowing with milk and honey,” through the bodies of animals and people. Theorists of autobiography tend to emphasize the centrality of the individual against the community. By contrast, in her reading of Hebrew autobiography, Tamar Hess identifies the textual presence and function of the collective and its interplay with the Israeli self. What characterizes the ten writers she examines is the idea of a national self, an individual whose life story takes on meaning from his or her relation to the collective history and ethos of the nation. Her second and related argument is that this self - individually and collectively - must be understood in the context of waves of immigration to Israel's shores. Hess convincingly shows that autobiography is a transnational genre deeply influenced by the nation's literary as well as cultural history. This book focuses on the complex network of relationships between the poet Uri Zvi Grinberg and the Labor Movement in Mandate Palestine from 1923 to 1937. Making use of letters found in the Uri Zvi Grinberg Archive at the National Library of Israel (NLI), the author reconstructs the characteristics of Grinberg’s pioneer readership, attesting to their special relationship with his poetry. In the 1920s, it is argued, they considered Grinberg’s poetry an authentic expression of their complex spiritual world and especially of the reality of their lives. On his side, Grinberg accepted the pioneering ethos as the ideological basis of his works, becoming an outstanding poet of the Labor Movement. The chapters of this book track the various phases of Grinberg’s life and poetry, from his emigration to Palestine through to the 1930s, when he joined the Revisionist Movement and became increasingly ostracized from the Labor Movement. The story of Grinberg’s relations with the pioneers was emotionally charged—a mixture of enchantment and rejection, spiritual closeness and repulsion.
