This study analyzes New Theses (Shinron) by Aizawa Seishisai (1781–1863) and its contribution to Japanese political thought and policy during the early–modern era. New Theses is found to be indispensable to our understanding of Japan’s transformation from a feudal to a modern state. Focusing on Aizawa, Bob Wakabayashi traces the development of xenophobia during the Tokugawa period and examines the basis of anti-Western sentiment. He shows how knowledge of Christianity inspired Aizawa to develop the potent concept of kokutai (“what is essential to a nation”). His analysis explains why the Edobakufu’s policies of national isolation (sakoku) and armed expulsion of Westerners (jōi) gained widespread support in the late Tokugawa. Wakabayashi also describes how information on Western affairs and world conditions decisively altered Tokugawa Confucian conceptions of civilization and barbarism, and how this in turn enabled the Japanese to redefine their nation’s relationship to China and the West. Rather than place Aizawa and his New Theses of 1825 at the beginning of a process leading up to the Meiji Restoration, Wakabayashi discusses New Theses in conjunction with the bakufu’s Expulsion Edict issued in the same year. He concludes that the convergence of the two events in 1825 marks the emergence of modern nationalism in Japan, and therefore should perhaps be seen as more epoch–making than the 1868 Restoration itself. The study also presents a complete translation of New Theses.

It was the year of 1969 when this monograph was originally published in Japanese by Professor TADASHI KAWAI, titled as "The Plasma Proteins, Their Fundamental and Clinical Aspects." After I read through the Japanese edition, I was impressed by its rather complete coverage of the subjects and their detailed descriptions. I have felt that this excellent monograph should be distributed not only among our Japanese scien tists but also among many other colleagues throughout the world. I am happy, the refore, to know that the English edition of his monograph, partly revised, is ready to be published at this time. Professor KAWAI received his postgraduate medical training in U.S.A. for seven years, and was certified by the American Board of Pathology in both Anatomical and Clinical Pathology in Fall, 1962. Thus, I believe, he is the most suitable fellow for publishing the English edition of this kind.

This chapter treats several approaches for employing nanophotonics or near-nanophotonics concepts to create low-power switches. The partly interrelated issues of low-power dissipation and small device footprint are elucidated and figures of merit for switches formulated. Both optically and electronically controlled optical switches are treated and the crucial role of material development emphasized, illustrated by several examples, including both theoretical analysis of switch concepts and experimentally realized switches. Thus, electronically controlled switches based on hybrid, metamaterial, and nanoparticle plasmonics, electrooptic polymers as well as switches based on silicon and photonic crystals are discussed. The all-optical switches focus on third-order nonlinear effects and carrier-induced refractive index changes in III–V materials, as well as on emerging concepts of near-field-coupled quantum-dot switches. A brief comparison to electronic switches is done.
Bioceramics, Volume 9 contains a compilation of the papers presented at the Ninth International Symposium in Ceramics in Medicine which was held in Otsu, Japan in November 1996. Over 150 papers were submitted to this symposium from 19 countries and 120 contributed papers and 8 invited papers for panel discussion were accepted. The readers will get a good overview of the recent progress in this discipline. The variety of ceramics and fields of their clincal applications are steadily growing and this book will undoubtedly contribute to the progression of this research area. In this symposium, a panel discussion on current status and future trend of ceramics in medicine was held by invited speakers doing research on the next generation of ceramics. General sessions consisting of the contributed papers were classified according to the kind of materials so that active discussion could arise concerning the respective material between ceramic scientists and medical scientists.
