Unto ALLAH belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and the earth. ALLAH is ever Knower, Wise" - (4:170).

Radicals tells the story of a group of radical Malay men and women from ordinary social backgrounds who chose to oppose foreign rule of their homeland, knowing full well that by embarking on this path of resistance, they would risk imprisonment or death. Their ranks included teachers, journalists, intellectuals, housewives, peasants, preachers, and youths. They formed, led, and contributed to the founding of political parties, grassroots organizations, unions, newspapers, periodicals, and schools that spread their ideas across the country in the aftermath of the Great Depression, when colonialism was at its height and evident in all areas of life in their country. But when their efforts to uproot foreign dominance faltered in the face of the sanctions the state imposed upon them, some of these radicals chose to take up arms, while others engaged in aggressive protests and acts of civil disobedience to uphold their rights. While some died fighting and hundreds were incarcerated, many lived to resist colonialism until their country attained its independence in August 1957, all of these Malay radicals were devoted to becoming free men and women and to claiming their right to be treated as equals in a world riddled with prejudice and contradictions. Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied's innovative study brings to light the less charted and unanalyzed terrain of the radical experience—becoming and being radical. He argues that the experiences and histories of radicals in colonial Malaya can be elucidated in a more nuanced way by interrogating them alongside evolving local and global circumstances and by analyzing them through the lenses of a set of overarching and interconnected mobilizing concepts—a set of ideas, visions, and notions that the radicals used to reason and justify their advent—that were internalized, lived, and utilized in the course of their activism. These mobilizing concepts were their weapons and armor, employed to organize, strategize, protect, and consolidate themselves when menaced by the tentacles of the colonial state as they embarked upon the agonizing path towards independence. Those interested in Malaysian history, colonial history, radical movements, and resistance groups will enjoy this fascinating study.

He got his high school education from a Catholic Missionary school, the best in town, and went on to get a bachelors and masters degree in entomology. He then got into the University of California at Riverside and earned a PhD in entomology under the supervision and guidance of Prof. Paul H. DeBauch, a world authority in biological control. Growing up in India with proper social/ethical values instilled by his elders and his school gave him the background to lead a decent life in different parts of the world. His professional career started after his masters and includes research and teaching in entomology in India, Kenya, Zimbabwe, England (Oxford University), Jordan (with the USAID), and USA (California) where he primarily worked for the state of California as a research scientist. His work in Kenya was with an international research organization (UN funded). He has eighteen scientific publications to his credit, published in internationally known/recognized scientific journals. In his social life, he has been deeply involved in community work and drafted to lead several institutions/organizations throughout his adult life. He is also the founder of an Islamic school (nationally recognized) and a Muslim cemetery in Sacramento, California. Retired in 2009, he devotes most of his time to community work. This current venture is an effort to convey to the reader the down-to-earth meaning and the real values of life, the understanding of some of the natural sciences from a laymans perspective, and above all, leading a content life.

Rather than a unified reading of Islam, Hyder reveals multiple, sometimes conflicting, understandings of the meaning of Islamic religious symbols like Karbala. He ventures beyond traditional, scriptural interpretations to discuss the ways in which millions of very human adherents express and practice their beliefs. By using a panoramic array of sources, including musical performances, interviews, nationalist drama, and other literary forms, Hyder traces the evolution of this story from its earliest historical origins to the beginning of the twenty-first century. Today, Karbala serves as a celebration of martyrdom, a source of personal and communal identity, and even a tool for political protest and struggle. Rural development remains a major challenge for governments of developing countries such as Pakistan. While a broad range of state and donor interventions impact the lives of poor farmers -who provide a significant proportion of the labour force - comprehensive consideration of these combined interactions remains inadequate. Focussing on Pakistan, this book discusses the political economy of agrarian poverty and underdevelopment in the region. The book provides an in-depth exploration of the combined impact of state and donor interventions, as well as that of resistance attempts, to alter the status quo within Pakistan. It questions the relevance of state institutions and policies contending with the problems of farmers in Pakistan, and how donor-led policies and programmes also influence their lives. It draws on findings that have emerged from interviews of over 200 respondents including government officials, donor agency representatives and different categories of poor farmers, during eleven months of fieldwork in the provinces of Sindh and Punjab. This research reveals some divergences between state and donor policies, but it finds more prominent convergences, which in turn enable the landed rural elite to benefit from market-based and capital-intensive processes of agricultural growth, without offering substantial opportunities for poor farmers. Reflecting the need to become less insular when discussing solutions to rural development, and demonstrating how state policies and institutions can interconnect with donor funded programmes, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of South Asian Politics and Development Studies.

He authored around 400 works in the cities of Islamic Spain like Cordoba, Jativa, Almeria, Majorca, Valencia, Seville and Niebla. A reader of his books will come to realize the smartness of Ibn Hazm and will be impressed by his intellectual voracity, deep knowledge in various sciences, razor-sharp critical analysis, eloquent language and originality of his research. In his outstanding work,“Ibn Hazm Khilal Alf Aam”, Abu Abdul Rahman bin Aqeel al-Zahiri listed the works, including published books and manuscripts, from the 5th century A.H. till 1400 A.H. – a span of a thousand years - which discuss Imam Ibn Hazm.
