It is a great privilege to write the foreword for this classical work of Professor Charles Drake. There is no doubt that intracranial aneurysms have existed since the beginning of time. This terrifying disease of the brain arteries, with its dramatic consequences for the patient, has surely been observed in all human collectives, although clear definition and description in the literature began only 300 years ago. During the last century, clinical signs and symptoms have been carefully observed and analyzed, and 100 years ago, the first attempts were made for surgical treatment, such as the ligature of external and internal carotid and vertebral arteries. With the introduction of angiography, an entirely new dimension of diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the vascular diseases of CNS, was accomplished. In the years between 1945 and 1970, the neurosurgeon was increasingly stimulated to directly eliminate intracranial aneurysms. The most respected and avoided location, the aneurysms at the bifurcation of the basilar artery, remained as a "dark corner. " Several pioneers of neurosurgery attempted to explore the interpeduncular fossa, but finally retreated. Not so Charles Drake. His vision must have been stronger than his anxiety, after experiences of initial fatalities, to persevere more decisively in this desperate fight instead of to yield. Such steadfastness requires enormous courage. But what distin guishes courage! Surgical courage is not just a fearless or unscrupulous action.

Because of its importance in such areas as catalysis and electronic-device fabrication, the subject of chemisorption is of interest to a wide range of surfacists in physics, chemistry, materials science, as well as chemical and electronic engineering. As a result, a vast lite- ture has been created, though, despite this situation, there is a surprising scarcity of books on the subject. Moreover, those that are available tend to be experimentally oriented, such as, Chemisorption: An Experimental - proach (Wedler 1976). On the theoretical side, The Chemisorption Bond (Clark 1974) provides a good introduction, but is limited in not describing the more advanced techniques presently in use.

Advances In The Zoology of Tapeworms, 1950-1970 was first published in 1974. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. This volume is a sequel to the comprehensive study by Professors Robert A. Wardle and James A. McLeod, The Zoology of Tapeworms, published by the University of Minnesota Press in 1952. The new book is based on research and publications which have become available since the earlier volume was published. While much of the information in the earlier book was devoted to the identification, description, and classification of families, genera, and species, research efforts in the last two decades have been focused in new directions. Although some researchers have been engaged in revising the original classification in the light of new findings, others have been exploring specificity, serology, and genetics, and have undertaken studies of host-parasite relationships, pathogenesis, and therapeutics in the treatment of tapeworm infestation. These investigations have been facilitated by laboratory techniques which were not available for earlier studies. Following introductory chapters on the recent expansion of tapeworm research and the phylogeny of tapeworms, the authors devote a chapter each to 21 orders of tapeworms. The material is based on a survey of the literature including more than 2,000 papers on tapeworm zoology published since 1950. Chapters on laboratory propagation and on therapeutics complete the text, and there is an extensive list of references. Many drawings illustrate the text.

Originally published in the early 1950s, The Scalpel, the Sword celebrates the turbulent career of Dr. Norman Bethune (1890-1939), a brilliant surgeon, campaigner against private medicine, communist, and graphic artist. Bethune belonged to that international contingent of individuals who recognized the threat of fascism in the world and went out courageously to try to defeat it. Born in Gravenhurst, Ontario, Bethune introduced innovative techniques in treating battlefield injuries and pioneered the use of blood transfusions to save lives, which made him a legend first in Spain during the civil war and later in China when he served with the armies of Mao Zedong in their fight against the invading Japanese. He is today remembered amongst the pantheon of Chinese revolutionary heroes. In Canada Bethune’s strong left-wing views made him persona non grata, but this highly readable and engaging account has helped to sustain the memory of a great man.

Dr. Bonnick has applied her very careful and exact scientific approaches to expand and improve on her widely regarded initial text. In addition to the chapters in the first edition on the science of bone densitometry and its clinical appli- tion, this text has new chapters and a CD-ROM that come at a very critical time in our field. The clinical use of bone densitometry is increasing exponentially as more professional societies have endorsements and guidelines on the application of bone densitometry in the assessment and management of osteoporosis. The recent endorsement of population screening by the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has now provided g- ernmental validation to this technology, whose proper use Dr. Bonnick has pioneered. In a new chapter, Dr. Bonnick compares the similarities and differences in the recent gui- lines from the USPSTF and the National Osteoporosis Foundation, American Assoc- tion of Clinical Endocrinologists, American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the North American Menopause Society.
