Interpreting the Republic focuses on contemporary French literary and cinematic works (1986-2003) that reflect on what it means to belong to a nation such as France by giving voice to those who find themselves marginalized by French society. While citizenship and belonging can be, and indeed are, interpreted differently depending on the socio-cultural and political context, it is the foundational universalist republican principle of egalitarianism that has remained the sacred cow of French society. One of the major claims of this study is that the rigidity of French national discourse that attempts to impose a certain homogeneity in its official identificatory practices--all citizens are French, and thus difference (ethnic, sexual or other) ceases to matter--is but one of the many possible interpretations of the notion of the Republic. Vinay Swamy seeks to show how such supposedly unshakeable principles, too, can be, and often are, reinterpreted in novel ways by the works analyzed in this study, which carve out niches for their protagonists that are otherwise foreclosed in the French national space. Swamy examines the different tactics of identification deployed in works ranging from early "romans beurs" by Azouz Begag, Farida Belghoul and Soraya Nini, and Allah Superstar, the 2003 satirical novel by Y.B., to a number of films including Gazon maudit (1995), Ma vie en rose (1997), Le Placard (2001), Chouchou (2003), all of which (re)interpret the Republic in an effort to legitimize their protagonists' otherwise marginalized social position(s). He demonstrates how all these works put pressure, in a variety of ways, on an unacknowledged understanding of the institutional positions.

This short monograph which presents a unified treatment of the theory of estimating an economic relationship from a time series of cross-sections, is based on my Ph. D. dissertation submitted to the University of Wisconsin, Madison. To the material developed for that purpose, I have added the substance of two subsequent papers: "Efficient methods of estimating a regression equation with equi-correlated disturbances", and "The exact finite sample properties of estimators of coefficients in error components regression models" (with Arora) which form the basis for Chapters 11 and III respectively. One way of increasing the amount of statistical information is to assemble the cross-sections of successive years. To analyze such a body of data the traditional linear regression model is not appropriate and we have to introduce some additional complications and assumptions due to the hetero geneity of behavior among individuals. These complications have been discussed in this monograph. Limitations of economic data, particularly their non-experimental nature, do not permit us to know a priori the correct specification of a model. I have considered several different sets of assumptionR about the stability of coeffi cients and error variances across individuals and developed appropriate inference procedures. I have considered only those sets of assumptions which lead to opera tional procedures. Following the suggestions of Kuh, Klein and Zellner, I have adopted the linear regression models with some or all of their coefficients varying randomly across individuals.
Hindu civilization, the author argues, cannot be defended or protected merely by individual or personal piety or by performing of pujas. Hindus to survive collectively require a new mindset today to meet the growing challenge from this highly sophisticated multi-dimensional siege that is international in character, or risk over the next millennium perishing like the ancient Greeks, Egyptians, or Babylonians. It was a new mindset of the Jews after World War II that has kept Judaism alive and vibrant today. Hindutva or Hinduness, the author defines, is a collective mindset that identifies India as the motherland from the Himalayas to the Indian Ocean. Therefore, however pious a Hindu is, however prosperous Hindu temples become from doting devotees' offerings, it is this collective mindset of the people that matters, and not the piety of the individual in that collective.

This issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America provides a summary of several more common maternal-fetal-infant infectious diseases. Several experts in the field of maternal and perinatal infection have contributed to this issue to provide an overview of the up-to-date preventive strategies, screening and diagnostic methods, and treatment guidelines. While guidelines such as universal vaccination to prevent influenza during pregnancy are fairly well justified by supporting data, there is much uncertainty about the appropriate screening guidelines for conditions such as cytomegalovirus, where the lack of a proven effective treatment diminishes the value of screening. Moreover, increasing issues of antibiotic resistance and the lack of significant advancement in developing newer effective agents imply that both providers and health care facilities must follow guidelines of antimicrobial stewardship (ie, coordinated efforts to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials). It is our hope that this issue will aid providers in navigating these complex issues while also understanding the current state-of-the-science
Muthuraj Swamy provides a fresh perspective on the world religions paradigm and 'interreligious dialogue'. By challenging the assumption that 'world religions' operate as essential entities separate from the lived experiences of practitioners, he shows that interreligious dialogue is in turn problematic as it is built on this very paradigm, and on the myth of religious conflict. Offering a critique of the idea of 'dialogue' as it has been advanced by its proponents such as religious leaders and theologians whose aims are to promote inter-religious conversation and understanding, the author argues that this approach is 'elitist' and that in reality, people do not make sharp distinctions between religions, nor do they separate political, economic, social and cultural beliefs and practices from their religious traditions. Case studies from villages in southern India explore how Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities interact in numerous ways that break the neat categories often used to describe each religion. Swamy argues that those who promote dialogue are ostensibly attempting to overcome the separate identities of religious practitioners through understanding, but in fact, they re-enforce them by encouraging a false sense of separation.
