This book explores the place of feminism and uptake of trauma in contemporary work against sexual violence. Egan presents a refreshing alternative position on arguments about the co-optation or erasure of feminism within institutionalized, professionalized services for sexual assault victims. Using original research on Australian sexual assault services, Putting Feminism to Work effectively illustrates how feminist concepts and ideas have become routinized in contemporary services and enacted in daily practices with survivors and communities. The book engages with, yet resists, the notion that feminist engagement with knowledge (trauma) based in psychiatry and clinical psychology is incompatible with feminism or inevitably reduces sexual violence to a problem of individual healing. Indeed Egan argues that the productive ways practitioners integrate neurobiological understandings of trauma into their work suggests rich possibilities for reintroducing a non-essentialist biology of the body into feminist theories of sexual violence. Scholars, students and practitioners working in the fields of violence against women, sociology, women’s and gender studies, health, social work and policy studies, as well as the emerging field of sociologically informed trauma studies, will find this book of interest.

Edward Coles, who lived from 1786-1868, is most often remembered for his antislavery correspondence with Thomas Jefferson in 1814, freeing his slaves in 1819, and leading the campaign against the legalization of slavery in Illinois during the 1823-24 convention contest. In this new full-length biography Suzanne Cooper Guasco demonstrates for the first time how Edward Coles continued to confront slavery for nearly forty years after his time in Illinois. Not only did he attempt to shape the slavery debates in Virginia immediately before and after Nat Turner's rebellion, he also consistently entered national political discussions about slavery throughout the 1830s, 40s, and 50s. On each occasion Coles promoted a vision of the nation that combined a celebration of America's antislavery past with an endorsement of free labor ideology and colonization, a broad appeal that was designed to mollify his fellow-countrymen's sense of economic self-interest and virulent anti-black prejudice. As Cooper Guasco persuasively shows, Coles's antislavery nationalism, first crafted in Illinois in the 1820s, became the foundation of the Republican Party platform and ultimately contributed to the destruction of slavery. By exploring his entire life, readers come to see Edward Coles as a vital link between the unfulfilled antislavery sensibility of men like Thomas Jefferson and the pragmatic antislavery politics of Abraham Lincoln. In Edward Coles' life-long confrontation with slavery, as well, we witness the rise of antislavery politics in nineteenth-century America and come to understand the central role politics played in the fight against slavery.

Creative non-fiction based upon the romance & actual love letters between two Kentuckians from 1900-1904. Before radio, television, and autos, they carried on their romance separated by 100 miles, a full day's round trip by train and not manageable by buggy or horseback. Times and love were fraught with danger. They faced deadly plagues, putrid water systems, horrific accidents, violence, murders, and vicious political turmoil that included the assassinations of Kentucky Governor William Goebel and U.S. President William McKinley. Women had no vote, few rights, and were blocked from many occupations. Men were expected to be sole financial providers, reliably smart, brave and stable. Life's choices thwarted dreams as both yearned for a bit or sweetness to make life bearable. About the only reliable things they had were local daily newspapers and US Postal Service mail delivery 365 days a year (366 in leap years), including Sundays and holidays. Their letters engendered curiosity & this book.

Suzanne Jill Levine, his principal English translator, draws upon years of friendship as well as copious research and interviews in her remarkable book, the first biography of the inimitable writer. Manuel Puig (1932-1990), Argentinian author of Kiss of the Spider Woman and pioneer of high camp, stands alone in the pantheon of contemporary Latin American literature. Strongly influenced by Hollywood films of the thirties and forties, his many-layered novels and plays integrate serious fiction and popular culture, mixing political and sexual themes with B-movie scenarios. When his first two novels were published in the late 1960s, they delighted the public but were dismissed as frivolous by the leftist intellectuals of the Boom; his third novel was banned by the Peronist government for irreverence. His influence was already felt, though-even by writers who had dismissed him-and by the time the film version of Kiss of the Spider Woman became a worldwide hit, he was a renowned literary figure. Puig's way of life was as unconventional as his fiction: he spoke of himself in the female form in Spanish, renamed his friends for his favorite movie stars, referred to his young male devotees as "daughters," and, as a perennial expatriate, lived (often with his mother) everywhere from Rome to Rio de Janeiro.
