The advent of modern neurobiological methods over the last three decades has provided overwhelming evidence that it is the interaction of genetic factors and the experience of the individual that guides and supports brain development. Brains do not develop normally in the absence of critical genetic signaling, and they do not develop normally in the absence of essential environmental input. The key to understanding the origins and emergence of both the brain and behavior lies in understanding how inherited and environmental factors are engaged in the dynamic and interactive processes that define and direct development of the neurobehavioral system. Neural Plasticity and Cognitive Development focuses on children who suffered focal brain insult (typically stroke) in the pre- or perinatal period which provides a model for exploring the dynamic nature of early brain and cognitive development. In most, though not all, of the cases considered, the injuries affect substantial portions of one cerebral hemisphere, resulting in patterns of neural damage that would compromise cognitive ability in adults. However, longitudinal behavioral studies of this population of children have revealed only mild cognitive deficits, and preliminary data from functional brain imaging studies suggest that alternative patterns of functional organization emerge in the wake of early injury. Neural Plasticity and Cognitive Development posits that the capacity for adaptation is not the result of early insult. Rather, it reflects normal developmental processes which are both dynamic and adaptive operating against a backdrop of serious perturbation of the neural substrate.

This is a collection of my favorite motivational quotes all in one place! Some are sales related, some are business related, but most are simply life related. They are in no particular order, just a random thought for each day of the year to help keep you on a positive note. If the old saying “misery loves company” is true, then motivation must breed happiness! I have spent my entire career, in one form or another, in sales. As such, I have dealt with rejection almost every day of my working life. Don’t get me wrong, I have had a very successful career, but no sales person hears "yes" all the time. In fact, it is just the opposite. We hear "no" many more times than we hear yes. In sales, rejection is just something we deal with every day. When we let it get us down, it shows to everyone we meet, including our customers, our colleagues and our family. Essentially, our negative attitude becomes our worst enemy. Even if you are not is sales, if you let your negative thoughts get the best of you, you are your own worst enemy too. Given my profession, I have been asked many times how do I stay positive? It can’t be easy to keep the right attitude when you have to deal with rejection every day, right? Yes, actually, it can be. I stay positive because I choose to stay positive. I actually make a conscious effort to not be negative and to only be positive. I discovered long ago that a motivational quote always puts me in the right frame of mind. I started searching the internet for a daily quote that made me smile or motivated me in some way. Each day I did this, I found that I became better mentally prepared to tackle the day. More importantly, I was just happier! I started to share what I found online. I would put a daily motivational quote in my Facebook and LinkedIn statuses, I would blog about them, and I would tweet them on Twitter. Friends, family, and business associates all enjoyed them so much they started calling me "The Quote Lady." More importantly, everyone’s positive attitude seemed to be contagious. The more the motivation spread, the more everyone became motivated! That’s when I decided to pull together a collection of my favorite motivational quotes all in one place, and this eBook was created. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do. The Webb School of Bell Buckle is the oldest continuously operating boarding school in the South. In Culleoka, Tennessee, in 1870, William Robert "Sawney" Webb Sr. founded the school, and classes were taught in the basement of a Methodist church. Webb's brother, John Maurice, joined as coprincipal in 1873. Having family ties to the town of Bell Buckle, the Webbs moved the school to its permanent home in 1886. With Sawney known for his drive and discipline and John known for his "saintly character, deep learning, and the gift of imparting it," according to Vanderbilt University professor emeritus Edwin Mims (Webb School class of 1888), the brothers were a powerful force in education and later became founding members of the Southern Association of Independent Schools. In addition to 10 Rhodes Scholars, the school has produced governors, university presidents, diplomats, CEOs, actors, artists, and several award-winning authors. The Webb School celebrates its sesquicentennial in 2020.

A reading of contemporary women's fiction in Spanish America in which space, rather than time, is seen as the driver of the narrative. Space is critical to imaginative writing. As English novelist Elizabeth Bowen has observed: 'nothing can happen nowhere'. This book offers an interdisciplinary framework for reading novels, and in particular women's fiction in Spanish America, with a focus on geoplot, on space rather than time as the narrative engine. Following the work of Lefebvre and Friedman, the author examines recent works by Spanish America's most visible women novelists - Angeles Mastretta [Mexico], Isabel Allende [Chile], Rosario Ferré [Puerto Rico], Sara Sefchovich [Mexico] and Laura Restrepo [Colombia] -and the ways in which their female protagonists challenge the spatial barriers erected by capitalist hegemony. Margins, borders, liminal spaces, the chora-space, and the body are emphasized as potential sites of transgression. The analysis identifies spatial negotiation as a mechanism both for cementing and for undermining authority, thus exposing the strategies through which literature constructs and represents power. SUSAN CARVALHO is Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at the University of Kentucky, and Director of the Middlebury College Spanish School.
