Between 1942 and 1945, the British government conducted a propaganda campaign in the United States to create popular consensus for a postwar Anglo-American partnership. Anticipating an Allied victory, British officials feared American cooperation would end with the war. Susan A. Brewer provides the first study of Britain's attempts to influence an American public skeptical of postwar international commitment, even as the United States was replacing Britain as the leading world power. Brewer discusses the concerns and strategies of the British propagandists—journalists, professors, and businessmen—who collaborated with the generally sympathetic American media. She examines the narratives they used to link American and British interests on such controversial issues as the future of the empire and economic recovery. In analyzing the barriers to Britain's success, she considers the legacy of World War I, and the difficulty of conducting propaganda in a democracy. Propaganda did not prevent the transition of global leadership from the British Empire to the United States, Brewer asserts, but it did make that transition work in Britain's interest.

Because natural water changes seasonally and with other factors, monitoring the disinfection of it should include a feedback system that tests the outcome and adapts the disinfection chemical to maintain a constant desired level of microorganisms being suppressed. Springthorpe and Sattar (both environmental microbiology, U. of Ottawa) investigate the feasibility of using such a dynamic system to deliver a continuous residual. They enclosed the test microorganisms within a hollow fiber cartridge originally developed for use in kidney dialysis, and delivered the disinfectant through the semi-permeable membrane bundle of the cartridge from a plant or pilot plant effluent at a constant residual. Life was hard, money was short for some, though others earned good wages in the ammunition works. It soon became obvious that many men would never come back.But life in the city went on, everyone played their part, the cinemas and theatres stayed open, as did the pubs (though with reduced hours). Concerts kept the people entertained and helped to raise vital funds, and news films kept them up-to-date with the latest from the Front. But, eventually it was over and the city had a different set of problems to deal with
