This book has a wistful feel to it as it chronicles a period when Maybole's famous shoe factories employed 1500 people and sold a million pairs of shoes and boots a year. Also included are the villages of Culroy, Dunure (one of my own favourite places), Croy Shore, Maidens, Straiton, Crosshill, Kirkmichael and Turnberry.
An entertaining history of the 'Bonnet Toun' and its near-neighbours accompanied by 51 excellent photographs taken in the days when local people could still expect a job for life in the mills, enjoy a visit from a pioneering aviator, and rejoice in the fact that Stewarton was the bowling capital of Scotland!
