Nestled in a deep gorge along the Mohawk River, Little Falls first came into being as a village in 1811 and became Herkimer County's only city in 1895. With its close proximity to main routes of transportation via the Erie Canal system and railroad, as well as its access to waterpower from the Mohawk River, Little Falls became a manufacturing leader and Herkimer County's largest populated area. It was famous nationwide for its cheese market and innovations in dairy and cheese manufacturing equipment. It was the site of one of the worst train wrecks in the history of the New York Central Railroad, boasts the sixth-highest lift lock in the world, and is the hometown of a famous radio personality who started the televised dance show Twist-A-Rama in the 1960s.

Students that attended this school were enriched by the values of the Free Methodist Church. Originally, Spring Arbor Seminary was a private school for elementary and secondary students. In the 1920s, Spring Arbor Seminary added a junior college. In 1963, Spring Arbor High School and Junior College became Spring Arbor College, which attained university status in 2001. One hundred fifty years after the school's original conception, Spring Arbor University maintains its original dedication to impart the sound Christian doctrine of the Free Methodist Church to its students. This dedication is embodied by the university's mission statement, which is better known as 'the Concept.

By the early eighteenth century, this scientific interest was spreading to wealthy people in search of a rest cure. Bathing in the sea, drinking the waters and spending time in the bracing air became a widespread activity, and by the nineteenth century this had expanded thanks to extensive advertising and publicity about its beneficial effects. Specific forms of entertainment also developed, such as piers, aquaria, winter gardens and cinemas.
