The guide is designed to illustrate how it is realistic and possible to teach in a target foreign language, propose effective instructional strategies and techniques, and offer suggestions for inservice teacher workshops on the approach. It is proposed that language students need to experience the target language as a real means of communication, have a chance to develop their own built-in learning system, and bridge the gap between controlled, secure classroom practice and the unpredictability of real language encounters. The guide begins with a discussion of teacher concerns about teaching in the target language, sources of meaning other than verbal in communication, classroom techniques for providing messages without use of language, and providing messages using limited language. The second section offers specific strategies for implementation in the classroom, including simple instructions and other expressions, techniques for encouraging student participation and satisfaction, and areas in which teachers can cooperate. Specific activities are provided and illustrated. The final section gives ideas for departmental inservice workshops on teaching in the target language, including activities, and recommendations for troubleshooting in classroom communication. (MSE)
Issues in the teaching of grammar in a second language are explored, and classroom presentation methods are discussed. The first chapter introduces four views of grammar and its use: as description; terminology; rules; and pattern. Each is illustrated with examples from instructional materials in several languages. In the second chapter, the direct and indirect approaches to teaching grammar are distinguished, and three approaches used in practice are described and illustrated: (1) grammar presented and practiced implicitly; (2) explicit grammar practiced as pattern; and (3) explicit grammar formally discussed. The third chapter addresses the teacher's choice of approach, noting that the choice will rest primarily on the language elements concerned and the learners' needs. The fourth chapter outlines some points on which the teacher may want to reflect in selecting the appropriate technique for teaching grammar. Contains a six-item list for further reading. (MSE)
This title is based on two of CILT's earliest and most influential Pathfinders. It shows how it is possible to develop an ethos of communication in the target language involving teacher to pupil, pupil to teacher, and pupil to pupil interaction. The material has been updated and written, where appropriate, to take account of current curriculum initiatives and research.
This book will help teachers to organize language lessons so that they offer opportunities for real communication and lively interaction while still maintaining a positive atmosphere for pupils and teachers alike. It describes strategies for dealing constructively with problems and reducing the need for too much overtly imposed control.
This text focuses on disaffected or potentially disruptive pupils. It sets out practical ways of engaging and helping them to succeed in their language learning. The publication provides an appraisal of how we can address the inclusion agenda in the MFL classroom through motivating activities and strong classroom management.

This book takes a unique approach to the examination of the eating disorder, anorexia nervosa (and bulimia). White, middle-class, heterosexual women share their insights into the emergence of their illnesses through detailed interviews that consider perceptions of the role of family, the influence of cultural messages regarding thinness and beauty, the agency these women exert in the use of weight control to cope with life’s stressors, the meaning they attach to their eating disorders and how these issues together perpetuate their disease. The book uses a Symbolic Interactionist framework and a grounded theory approach to examine the narratives which emerge from these women’s stories. Themes of family, culture, and self arise in their narratives; these form the theoretical underpinnings for this book, and combine to shape the comprehensive model of eating disorders that emerges from this study. Haworth-Hoeppner’s book will appeal to researchers and advanced students of sociology, women’s studies, family studies, social psychology, and gender studies.

Sweet and Clean? challenges the widely held beliefs on bathing and cleanliness in the past. For over thirty years, the work of the French historian, George Vigarello, has been hugely influential on early modern European social history, describing an aversion to water and bathing, and the use of linen underwear as the sole cleaning agent for the body. However, these concepts do not apply to early modern England. Sweet and Clean? analyses etiquette and medical literature, revealing repeated recommendations to wash or bathe in order to clean the skin. Clean linen was essential for propriety but advice from medical experts was contradictory. Many doctors were convinced that it prevented the spread of contagious diseases, but others recommended flannel for undergarments, and a few thought changing a fever patient's linens was dangerous. The methodology of material culture helps determine if and how this advice was practiced. Evidence from inventories, household accounts and manuals, and surviving linen garments tracks underwear through its life-cycle of production, making, wearing, laundering, and final recycling. Although the material culture of washing bodies is much sparser, other sources, such as the Old Bailey records, paint a more accurate picture of cleanliness in early modern England than has been previously described. The contrasting analyses of linen and bodies reveal what histories material culture best serves. Finally, what of the diseases-plague, smallpox, and typhus-that cleanliness of body and clothes were thought to prevent? Did following early modern medical advice protect people from these illnesses?
In 1922, when Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon discovered the tomb of Tutankhamen, much of what was then known about mummies came from the writing of Greek historian Herodotus and from the paintings on the walls of Egyptian tombs. Even before 1922, the mummy had been the subject of fiction, with such writers as Bram Stoker and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tackling the subject, and early films dating back to 1901. In this work, the authors present the religious, social and scientific aspects of mummies as well as an in-depth discussion of facts about them (largely Egyptian, but including other kinds of mummies). Then, how mummies are portrayed in fiction and in the movies is discussed. Stories and films in which the mummy is a focal character are listed.
Documenting Impossible Realities explores the limitations of conventional accounts through which belonging is documented, focusing on the experiences of adoptees, deportees, migrants, and other exilic populations. Susan Bibler Coutin and Barbara Yngvesson speak to the current historical moment in which the dichotomy between an "above ground" inhabited by dominant groups and an "underground" to which unauthorized immigrants, political exiles, and transnational adoptees are relegated cannot be sustained. This dichotomy was made possible by the illusion that some people do not belong, that some forms of kin are not real, or that certain ways of knowing do not count. To examine accounts that challenge such illusions, Coutin and Yngvesson focus on the spaces between groups, where difference is constituted and where the potential for new forms of relationship may be realized. By juxtaposing and moving between entangled realities and modes of expression, Documenting Impossible Realities conveys the emotional experience of oscillating between being here and gone, legitimate and treated as counterfeit.
This book is concerned with the history of the idea of human rights. It offers a fresh approach that puts aside familiar questions such as 'Where do human rights come from?' and 'When did human rights begin?' for the sake of looking into connections between debates about the rights of man and developments within the history of capitalism. The focus is on England, where, at the end of the eighteenth century, a heated controversy over the rights of man coincided with the final enclosure of common lands and the momentous changes associated with early industrialisation. Tracking back still further to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century writing about dispossession, resistance and rights, the book reveals a forgotten tradition of thought about central issues in human rights, with profound implications for their prospects in the world today.

Between 1982 and 1993, Susan Sapsed kept a diary that is referred to throughout this book. She began this diary when she was 37 years of age, convinced that she was suffering from Ménière’s disease (a disorder of the inner ear). Nearly 40 years later, Susan discovered the diary by chance. It told a story of personal illness, practitioner misunderstanding, patient frustration and familial loss. It was clear to the authors of this book that it could be used as a starting point for a meditation on patient power and powerlessness, and as an analytic comparison between healthcare systems at play in the past and in the present. Using psychoanalytic frameworks, this book invited a more mature Susan to reflect on her earlier self and on treatment that was not always worthy of the name. It explores ideas of agency and what purpose a diary really serves. Although the diary is not presented in its entirety, some passages have been left unedited. The book explores the earlier contributions, presenting a narrative that combines the old and the new.

Antisthenes was famous in antiquity for his studies of Homer's poems, his affiliation with Gorgias and the sophistic movement, his pure Attic writing style, and his inspiration of Diogenes of Sinope, who founded the Cynic philosophical movement. Antisthenes stands at two of the greatest turning points in ancient intellectual history: from pre-Socraticism to Socraticism, and from classical Athens to the Hellenistic period. Antisthenes' works form the path to a better understanding of the intellectual culture of Athens that shaped Plato and laid the foundations for Hellenistic philosophy and literature. Antisthenes of Athens keeps in mind the goals and polemics framing each philosophical and textual discussion. The volume considers the ancient traditions about Antisthenes' rejection of Plato's "Theory of Forms," his assertion of the paradox, "It is impossible to gainsay," and his denial that definition of essence is possible, as well as the plausible intentions of Antisthenes. In cases where these questions are not easily settled, and where modern interpretation has varied, Susan H. Prince identifies the roots of the disagreements. The goal and meaning of Antisthenes' other famous ancient paradox, "I would rather go mad than have pleasure," is illuminated by comparison with other evidence showing that pleasure does have a place in his ideology. Evidence for his relationship to Diogenes of Sinope, and for his receptions by the Cynics, Stoics, Skeptics, Christians, and Neo-Pagans is examined for both its historical value and its distorting tendencies.
