This book recovers the lives of four men masked behind one legend. Reinterpreting recently rediscovered documents shows a Tuscan artist Leonardo da Vinci was banished from Florence around 1477, when at the same moment another Leonardo arrived from the East, an Ottoman agent from Genoese Caffa in the Black Sea. This Leonardo was a military engineer, who began writing technical notes backward in a flourishing Italian script. In Florence, around 1500, he met the alchemist and polymath Zoroastro, who collaborated in producing the scientific Notebooks. However, by the mid-sixteenth century, all memory of Zoroastro had been erased, and the two Leonardos had been conflated into one identity. Crucially, an archived document, rediscovered around 2021, proved that the Tuscan painter Leonardo da Vinci died in 1499. This information leads to the recovery of the artist who really painted the Mona Lisa, Giovanni Antonio Boltraffio.

Euromissiles is a history of diplomacy and alliances, social movements and strategy, nuclear weapons and nagging fears, and politics. To tell that history, Colbourn takes a long view of the strategic crisis—from the emerging dilemmas of allied defense in the early 1950s through the aftermath of the INF Treaty thirty-five years later. The result is a dramatic and sweeping tale that changes the way we think about the Cold War and its culmination.

Being an American citizen born outside the United States in the forties and fifties was pretty commonplace. World War II had taken its toll and influenced many people's lives; the war is over but not forgotten. Many servicemen encountered loneliness, displacement, and depression in their military leaves away from their country, families, and friends and found solace in the arms of beautiful, passionate, loving women in different countries all over the world. They started new lives, new families, and encountered numerous business opportunities in countries that suffered from the devastation of war. My father was one of the men who saw the needs of a country and the potential for development of natural resources with unlimited manpower. He saw the desire of an impoverished nation to improve the lives and existence of its countrymen. This is how my father ended up in the Philippines, met my mother and married her, and started a new family that included myself. My father's foresight into the potential of the Filipino people to be hardworking, industrious people--and the realization that this country could be industrialized and produce its own viable commodities that would enable the populations to have jobs and feed their families and become independent of the countries that had monopolized, manipulated, and created dependencies for years--was real. My father proved that this Filipino nation, when given an opportunity, could become an extremely productive nation that would become self-sufficient and be able to walk with pride. He taught a nation of people about self-worth and the rewards of hard work. His true plight did not occur until he had accomplished wealth, power, and recognition for being successful in industrializing the Philippines and creating jobs for millions of people. His insight into the needs of a country wallowing in poverty and the devastating effects and aftermath of war and his desire, foresight, intelligence, and energy to create employment for people who were eager to reconstruct and improve their lives was endless and rewarding for all. Having been born in the beginning phase of his business endeavors, I watched and rode the wave of his ascent to financial success with him and enjoyed, marveled, and was proud of who my father was and all of his accomplishments. I still am and will forever be proud of who my father was.

Apulia (or Puglia) is the heel of Italy, stretching down from the spur of the Italian boot. It is featured on radio and television; travel supplements describe its beaches and its cooking, supermarkets stock Apulian wine, oil, bread and pasta. Yet almost nothing about the region has been published in English since the days of Norman Douglas and the Sitwells. One can find 'holiday histories' of Tuscany, but there is no popular introduction to Apulian history, not even in Italian. Our book, which grew out of what was originally intended as a travel book, has been written to fill the gap by providing a simple, readable account.

Making wise decisions about the alarmingly expensive goods that composed a fashionable wardrobe became a matter of pressing concern, especially when the market caught on and became awash in cheaper editions of luxury wares. Focusing on the luxury trade in fashionable wear and accessories in Venice, Florence, and other towns in Italy, Gilding the Market investigates a major shift in patterns of consumption at the height of medieval prosperity, which, more remarkably, continued through the subsequent era of plague, return of plague, and increased warfare. A fine sensitivity to the demands of "le pompe," that is, the public display of private wealth, infected town life. The quest for luxuries affected markets by enlarging exchange activity and encouraging retail trades. As both consumers and tradesmen, local goldsmiths, long-distance traders, bankers, and money changers played important roles in creating this new age of fashion. In response to a greater public display of luxury goods, civic sumptuary laws were written to curb spending and extreme fashion, but these were aimed at women, youth, and children, leaving townsmen largely unrestricted in their consumption. With erudition, grace, and an evocative selection of illustrations, some reproduced in full color, Susan Mosher Stuard explores the arrival of fashion in European history.
