An air of mystcry surrounds Cleopatra. A record of her reign as queen of Egypt simply doesn't exist and we must piece together her story from fragments, artifacts, and historical writings. Was she a selfish, extravagant, and overly ambitious tyrant? Or was she a patriotic advocate for her people with the courage to stand up to those who held power in Rome? Cleopatra spent her reign fighting for her right to rule and struggling to maintain Egypt's independence. Love, power, and political advantage became intertwined as Cleopatra aligned herself with the dominant political figures of her time. These partnerships both helped and hurt her beloved Egypt. So who was Cleopatra? Her motives may be open to debate, but it cannot be denied that she was a savvy political mastermind, a powerful queen, and a force to be reckoned with - in any age. This book explores the career paths of Australian women who have succeeded in achieving professorships and beyond, where for the most part, such positions are predominately occupied by males. It also explores the gendered culture that exists across faculties and universities as reported by participants in a survey questionnaire of 525 new professors (female and male), and nearly 30 interviews of women in Australian higher education, either in small focus groups or individually. Futher, it identifies catalysts for and inhibitors of success for women and looks in depth at “the boys’ club” and how it impacts women’s progression. The book also highlights how critical life decisions — doctoral study, work and family — shape the careers of academic women. It identifies five distinct career profiles for women academics and the pressure points and effective support for each profile. Thus, this book can assist women academics who are making life decisions and those supporting their career progression. It also provides insights into why affirmative action initiatives to improve the proportion of women in the professoriate have had minimal impact despite considerable investment over the past 30 years.
As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. Who touched me? Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you. But Jesus said, Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me. Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. Then he said to her Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace (Luke 8:4048 NIV). How wonderful it is to touch the very hem of His garment each time we open His words of truth in the Biblehidden treasures revealed through the presence of His Holy Spirit.
Life is full of drama. How can we know the Lord is speaking to us? How can we hear God when our lives are so busy? 1 Kings 17–2 Kings 2 is the story of the prophet Elijah and his example of using basic spiritual disciplines to hear God’s voice. Elijah’s circumstances were not so different than ours. His story is full of highs and lows. He was consumed by fear for his life, depression, fatigue, and too many demands. But when Elijah listened for God’s gentle whispers he was confident, he had God’s power to perform miracles, he had a fiery attitude to take on anything or anybody, he had supernatural strength and energy, he led others’ to recognize Truth, and he had acute hearing of God’s voice. This story begins and ends with the same amazing scene for Elijah ... and for us. It is a miracle more powerful and life changing than fire from heaven or a limitless supply of oil in a jar. It is the miracle of knowing God. Everything that God offered Elijah, He offers to us: His power, His Word, and His Presence. Through the use of basic, daily spiritual disciplines we can prepare our hearts, as Elijah did, to hear the voice of God. Will we allow God to interrupt the harried pace of our days to speak to us? If we are still, we will hear His gentle whisper. Listen closely. He is calling.

Exploring Social Geography, first published in 1984, offers a challenging yet comprehensive introduction to the wealth of empirical research and theoretical debate that has developed in response to the advent of a social approach to the subject. The argument emphasises the essentially spatial structure of social interaction, and includes a succinct discussion of geographical research on segregation and interaction, which has combined numerical analyses and qualitative ethnographic field research. A distinctive view of social geography is adopted, inspired by the Chicago school of North American pragmatism, but also incorporating the formal sociological theories of Simmel and Weber. Exploring Social Geography will be of value to students of urban geography in particular. However, it will also indicate a wide-ranging and distinctive perspective for all students of the social sciences with a special interest in debates concerning urban, ethnic, racial, anthropological and theoretical issues.

Explaining why and how we should study Economics, the book contains invaluable information on course content, learning techniques, revision, writing essays and dissertations, and examination assessment.
From tongue-in-cheek sonnets to lyrical free verse, this collection of poems explores the many kinds of home animals make for themselves. Readers will meet better-known animal dwellings like the spiderweb and the bird's nest as well as the more unusual: a fawn's thicket bed, a hare's bowl-shaped ground nest, and a sea anemone's ever-changing tide pool home. Readers experience different habitats—desert, grasslands, shoreline, wetland, and woodland—and the animals that build their dwellings there. Jamie Hogan's expressive line art complements this clever anthology. Back matter provides more information on the highlighted habitats, poetic forms, and the writing process.
