The "Simple" stories, Langston Hughes's satirical pieces featuring Harlem's Jesse B. Semple, have been lauded as Hughes's greatest contribution to American fiction. In Not So Simple, Donna Akiba Sullivan Harper provides the first full historical analysis of the Simple stories. Harper traces the evolution and development of Simple from his 1943 appearance in Hughes's weekly Chicago Defender column through his 1965 farewell in the New York Post. Drawing on correspondence and manuscripts of the stories, Harper explores the development of the Simple collections, from Simple Speaks His Mind (1950) to Simple's Uncle Sam (1965), providing fresh and provocative perspectives on both Hughes and the characters who populate his stories. Harper discusses the nature of Simple, Harlem's "everyman", and the way in which Hughes used his character both to teach fellow Harlem residents about their connection to world events and to give black literature a hero whose "day-after-day heroism" would exemplify greatness. She explores the psychological, sociological, and literary meanings behind the Simple stories, and suggests ways in which the stories illustrate lessons of American history and political science. She also examines the roles played by women in these humorously ironic fictions. Ultimately, Hughes's attitudes as an author are measured against the views of other prominent African American writers. Demonstrating the richness and complexity of this Langston Hughes character and the Harlem he inhabited. Not So Simple makes an important contribution to the study of American literature.
After the Civil War, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad took the lead among southern railroads in developing rail systems and organizing transcontinental travel. Through two world wars, federal government control, internal crises, external dissension, the Depression, and the great Ohio River flood of 1937, the L&N Railroad remained one of the country's most efficient lines. It is a southern institution and a railroad buff's dream. When eminent railroad historian Maury Klein's definitive History of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad was first published in 1972, it quickly became one of the most sought after books on railroad history. This new edition both restores a hard-to-find classic to print and provides a new introduction by Klein detailing the L&N's history in the thirty years since the book was first published.

Wealthy Hugh Grimes is best known for his speeding around town in his bright red sports car. Farm and ranch women are the heart of an important American institution, agriculture. Their strength is a critical resource for their families and communities. This book offers those women their own special prescription for health and well-being in one hundred small doses. Some “capsules” remind of care to be taken daily, some to be taken regularly, others to take as needed, several to give to family and friends and still more to apply to the community. Reading this book won’t make you immediately “feel good” like a warm beverage or a serving of your mother’s best meal. It won’t always bring a tear of nostalgia to the eye or a longing for the good old days. But like a good tonic, these capsules of advice and encouragement will stimulate you. You’ll find essays that will boost your morale. Others will prompt you to be grateful. Several instruct about health matters. And some will even make you laugh. There’s no better prescription than that, is there? TEDDY JONES, R.N., Ph.D., is a Family Nurse Practitioner. Before she and her husband began farming his family’s land near Friona, Texas, she was a Professor at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, in Lubbock, Texas. Growing up in a rural town in central North Texas, she spent lots of happy times with cousins on their families’ wheat and dairy farms. Those experiences and her admiration for those who farm and ranch prompted her to develop and teach elective courses in Rural Health Nursing. That same interest spurred her to develop the concept for her health promotion column, “In The Middle Of It All,” which appears monthly in “The Farmer Stockman.” She practices part-time as a Nurse Practitioner in New Mexico and writes when she’s not helping with the farm work. SUE JANE SULLIVAN, B.S.Ed., teaches in the only school in the only town in Borden County, Texas. That rural school is not far from the area where she grew up, surrounded by ranches, farms and oil wells. Like most people in farming and ranching areas, she can and does fill many roles. She teaches English, Spanish, history and government and coaches Interscholastic League literary events including debate, journalism, and spelling. She’s a free-lance newspaper writer and her newsletter, “A New Song,” is a regular source of encouragement for the special group of friends for whom she publishes it. A major inspiration for her work is her maternal grandmother who was widowed at 41, during the Great Depression. She managed to keep and operate the family farm and raise five children long before the term single parent was invented.
Eleven Miles South of Half Moon Bay is a shout of joy and a howl of grief. It is a single golden instant and all eternity. It is a story mundane as boys playing marbles yet vast as life and death. It is the story of two free spirits: cousins for a mortal moment, brothers forever.

It could be a book about anywhere USA, and in reading the compendium of columns, the reader will get to know people they dont know, and will feel as if they did know them. Each brief biographical sketch gives you not only an understanding of the person and their times, but a feel for the contributions their lives made in the overall quality of life in their communities. As a daughter of one of the subjects wrote to the author, You gave my mother a great gift-recognition for her lifes achievements She was uplifted by your telling of her story, and we are forever grateful to you for putting the cherry on top of her career. Memories, in the end, are all we have, and the sweeter the memory, the more appreciation there is for lives well lived. There are lots of sweet memories, and lifes lessons learned in this book. The author hopes you enjoy reading about them as much as he enjoyed writing about them.

In this contemplative yet explosive novel, Chuck Rainer is an experienced Marine serving in Iraq. He questions why the U.S. invaded, because to him, things just don't add up. It is too much to accept all the young soldiers around him being killed, without seeing a good reason for war. After his discharge, he runs for Congress to get answers. What he discovers will astonish you! "This book is definitely worth the read. You would have to keep in mind of course that it's fiction. It can give you so many aspects of what potentially could have gone on, not to mention the action and thrills that are in the book." - Tyler Jones, U.S. Army "This book will give readers a prospective of one of the many possibilities that could have gone on with regard to the Iraq war, but if nothing else, the action and the mystery make it a good read. It would definitely give the public something to think about and the reason to get involved civilly in our democracy. - Michael Walsh, U.S. Navy "As a soldier who served several tours in Iraq, I found Rainer's War to be very refreshing and well worth the read. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to explore the potentials of how a war can start, and how and why young men and women are asked to risk their lives." -

In Seven Dirty Words, journalist and cultural critic James Sullivan tells the story of Alternative America from the 1950s to the present, from the singular vantage point of George Carlin, the Catholic boy for whom nothing was sacred. A critical biography, Seven Dirty Words is an insightful (and, of course, hilarious) examination of Carlin's body of work as it pertained to its cultural times and the man who created it, from his early days as amore-or-less conventional comedian to his stunning transformation into the subversive comedic voice of the emerging counterculture. Sullivan also chronicles Carlin's struggles with censorship and drugs, as well as the full-blown renaissance he experienced in the 1990s, both personally and professionally, when he became an elder statesman to a younger generation of comics who revered him. Seven Dirty Words is nothing less than the definitive biography of an American master who changed the world, and also a work of cultural commentary which frames George Carlin's extraordinary legacy.

A riveting courtroom drama about the victims of one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. history—and the country lawyer determined to challenge the notion that, in America, justice can be bought For more than fifty years, a power plant in the small town of Kingston, Tennessee, burned fourteen thousand tons of coal a day, gradually creating a mountain of ashen waste sixty feet high and covering eighty-four acres, contained only by an earthen embankment. In 2008, just before Christmas, that embankment broke, unleashing a lethal wave of coal sludge that covered three hundred acres, damaged nearly thirty homes, and precipitating a cleanup effort that would cost more than a billion dollars—and the lives of more than fifty cleanup workers who inhaled the toxins it released. Jim Scott, a local personal-injury lawyer, agreed to represent the workers after they began to fall ill. That meant doing legal battle against the Tennessee Valley Authority, a colossal, federally owned power company that had once been a famous cornerstone of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Scott and his hastily assembled team gathered extensive evidence of malfeasance: threats against workers; retaliatory firings; disregarded safety precautions; and test results, either hidden or altered, that would have revealed harmful concentrations of arsenic, lead, and radioactive materials at the cleanup site. At every stage, Scott—outmanned and nearly broke—had to overcome legal hurdles constructed by TVA and the firm it hired to help execute the cleanup. He grew especially close to one of the victims, whose swift decline only intensified his hunger for justice. As the incriminating evidence mounted, the workers seemed to have everything on their side, including the truth—and yet, was it all enough to prevail? The lawsuit that Scott pursued on the workers’ behalf was about their illnesses, no doubt. But it was also about whether blue-collar employees could beat the C-suite; if self-described “hillbilly lawyers” could beat elite corporate defense attorneys; and whether strong evidence could beat fat pocketbooks. With suspense and rich detail, Jared Sullivan’s thrilling account lays bare the casual brutality of the American justice system, and calls into question whether—and how—the federal government has failed its people.
Author John L. Sullivan has spent the vast majority of his adult life working with the heroic men and women of law enforcement. Hes been a part of, dealt with, and has witnessed mans selfishness, cruelty, and inhumanity to his fellow citizens. But he can also give testimony to the caring and gentle side of man demonstrated each day by the citizen who wears the badge. In Chief of Detectives, Sullivan offers snapshot accounts of some of the experiences throughout his service. He shares stories of his trials and tribulations beginning with his career in a small, six-person suburban police department in the Midwest; rising through the ranks; and completing a thirty-four-year law-enforcement career as deputy chief, chief of detectives for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. This memoir narrates the story of Sullivans long-standing service in law enforcement that was filled with highs and lows and was exciting, adventurous, challenging, and harrowing at times. Chief of Detectives pays tribute to those officers with whom Sullivan served during his thirty-four year career as a police officer.
