Combining thematic analysis and stimulating close readings, 'The Collar' is a wide-ranging study of the many ways - heroic or comic, shrewd or dastardly - in which Christian clergy have been represented in literature, from George Herbert and Laurence Sterne, via Anthony Trollope, G.K. Chesterton, T.S. Eliot, and Graham Greene, to Susan Howatch and Robertson Davies, and in film and television, such as 'Pale Rider', 'The Thorn Birds', 'The Vicar of Dibley', and 'Father Ted'. Since all Christians are expected to be involved in ministry of some type, the assumptions of secular culture about ministers affect more than just clergy. Ranging across several nations (particularly Britain, the U.S., and Canada), denominations, and centuries, 'The Collar' encouragescreative and faithful responses to the challenges of Christian leadership and develops awareness of the times when leadership expectations become too extreme. Using the framework of different media to make inquiries about pastoral passion, frustration, and fallibility, Sue Sorensen's well-informed, sprightly, and perceptive book will be helpful to anyone who enjoys evocative literature and film as well as to clergy and those interested in practical theology.
Understanding and Evaluating Research: A Critical Guide shows students how to be critical consumers of research and to appreciate the power of methodology as it shapes the research question, the use of theory in the study, the methods used, and how the outcomes are reported. The book starts with what it means to be a critical and uncritical reader of research, followed by a detailed chapter on methodology, and then proceeds to a discussion of each component of a research article as it is informed by the methodology. The book encourages readers to select an article from their discipline, learning along the way how to assess each component of the article and come to a judgment of its rigor or quality as a scholarly report.

Providing care and treatment for patients usually requires moving and handling activities associated with high rates of back injuries. The personal and financial cost of back pain and injuries to health staff means there is an urgent need to improve practice in this area. Over the past twenty years a number of guidelines have been published, however, these have been based on professional consensus rather than evidence. Evidence-Based Patient Handling tackles the challenge of producing an evidence base to support clinical practice and covers tasks, equipment and interventions. This book questions previously held opinions about moving and handling and provides the foundation for future practice.
Executive coaching is a professional and personal development intervention that organizations introduce to address and improve those areas in managers and leaders behavior, attitude, and interactions with others that do not allow him/her to work at full potential and also to further improve one's own strengths. The end objective, besides the development of the managers and leaders, is for the organization to benefit in the long-run from the coachee's improved performance. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the executive coaching field both in terms of practice and in terms of relevant research on executive coaching outcomes. It assesses the empirical research on executive coaching outcomes and links the executive coaching field with the fields of leadership and leadership development. The book will be of value to both practitioners (coaches, HR professionals, executives, consultants etc.), academics and researchers with an interest in coaching or leadership development.
This book presents a set of essays on the globalization and intra-urban dynamics of the Asian cities conducted by Taiwanese and French researchers. It covers four main themes: “culture-led regeneration projects,” “dynamics of second-tier cities,” “urban redevelopment and land issues,” and “new urban spaces of regulation, associational life, and civic action.” It involved comparing research subject priorities in this field as well as the approaches chosen to deal with them within a geographical zone extended from Northeast to southern Asia. Rather than a comparison between Western and Asian visions of the same urban objects, the project aimed to highlight differences and/or similarities in the approaches of scientific communities, inevitably influenced by national issues. With great articulation and discourse between urban reality and theories, it also observes distinctive approaches of urban research teams respectively in France and Taiwan.
The Cost of Being Female is 30 cents, say the authors of this new book on discrimination against women. They demonstrate their thesis by constructing an index that documents the costs of discrimination against women in five aspects of life: economic, political, social, education, and health. The index compares the costs for American women with those of women in Sweden, Norway, France and China, and measures the costs for three time periods: 1990s, 1950s, and the 19th century. The authors interviewed over 70 women, providing a human approach to the statistics of earnings, occupations, political participation, marriage, divorce, childrearing, education, and women's health. The women's narratives are living testimony to the experiences of the costs of being female.

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2020-502/ Abstract [en] The present study has investigated and collected sales statistics of pharmaceuticals in Sweden, Norway and Iceland. A literature review of waste water treatment plants (WWTP) and the efficiency of different WWTP techniques was conducted and combined with a literature review of metabolization of pharmaceuticals in humans. These data have been linked and used for calculations of the amount of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites that actually reaches the aquatic recipient. A future recommendation is to include metabolites of pharmaceuticals in environmental impact studies to be able to assess and account for the chemicals that actually pass through a WWTP to the aquatic environment. No large differences regarding pharmaceuticals used were observed, and many were common in both Sweden, Iceland and Norway.

Donald Trump's rapid - and seemingly improbable - ascension from reality show star to polarizing president threw into question many assumptions about how our media and political worlds work. His habit of lying, history of racist statements, and disdain for conventions upended traditional journalist-elite relations. Taking an expansive view of the contemporary media and political environment during the Trump years, News After Trump portrays a media culture in transition. As journalism's very relevance comes to be increasingly questioned, we focus on how different actors - from Trump to small-town newspaper editors - use their cultural power to define journalism, assess its value, and question what the news should look like. The chapters chronicle how Trump and his allies turned attacks on journalists into a central component of a rightwing populist formula, with journalists positioned as just one more self-interested, out-of-touch elite. Over time, this anti-press rhetoric escalated, with Trump regularly debasing journalists as the enemy of the people. While journalists responded by falling back on cherished norms of objectivity and neutrality to trumpet their democratic role, many among their ranks questioned whether past commitments still had value in a changed media culture and if their reporting practices did more harm than good. To move forward, News After Trump does not advocate for a nostalgic return to the past, but instead argues for a journalism that is more assertive in speaking in a moral voice on behalf of communities, more comfortable in rendering judgments, and more self-aware of its shortcomings"--
Want to travel back in time to your high school prom? Wish your brain had a "hard drive" that remembered all of your appointments? Wouldn't you love to have a permanent size 6 figure? Why can't robots make your bed every morning? Believe it or not, these questions aren't as far-fetched as they sound. In How to Clone the Perfect Blonde, award-winning journalist Sue Nelson and Richard Hollingham show how cutting-edge science has the power to make all of your wildest dreams come true. Every page brings fresh and new scientific insights. In the chapter explaining "How to Shorten Your Commute," you'll learn how Austrian scientists "teleported" a photon across a laboratory--and why human beings could be next. In the chapter describing "How to Clone the Perfect Blonde," you'll descover that people have been harvesting and eating clones for centuries (strawberries and potatoes are just two of the many plants that are identical to their parents). And in the chapter "How to Live Forever," you'll tour America's thriving cryonics industry (where recently deceased volunteers are frozen to -320°F and stored indefinitely). In the tradition of bestselling pop-science books like The Physics of Star Trek and How to Build a Time Machine, this entertaining read explores the science of science fiction─and proves that anything is possible!

Turn Uncomfortable Conversations into Meaningful Dialogue If you believe that talking about race is impolite, or that "colorblindness" is the preferred approach, you must read this book. Race Talk and the Conspiracy of Silence debunks the most pervasive myths using evidence, easy-to-understand examples, and practical tools. This significant work answers all your questions about discussing race by covering: Characteristics of typical, unproductive conversations on race Tacit and explicit social rules related to talking about racial issues Race-specific difficulties and misconceptions regarding race talk Concrete advice for educators and parents on approaching race in a new way "His insistence on the need to press through resistance to have difficult conversations about race is a helpful corrective for a society that prefers to remain silent about these issues." —Christopher Wells, Vice President for Student Life at DePauw University "In a Canadian context, the work of Dr. Derald Wing Sue in Race Talk: and the Conspiracy of Silence is the type of material needed to engage a populace that is often described as 'Too Polite.' The accessible material lets individuals engage in difficult conversations about race and racism in ways that make the uncomfortable topics less threatening, resulting in a true 'dialogue' rather than a debate." —Darrell Bowden, M Ed. Education and Awareness Coordinator, Ryerson University "He offers those of us who work in the Diversity and Inclusion space practical tools for generating productive dialogues that transcend the limiting constraints of assumptions about race and identity." —Rania Sanford, Ed.D. Associate Chancellor for Strategic Affairs and Diversity, Stanford University "Sue's book is a must-read for any parent, teacher, professor, practioner, trainer, and facilitator who seeks to learn, understand, and advance difficult dialogues about issues of race in classrooms, workplaces, and boardrooms. It is a book of empowerment for activists, allies, or advocates who want to be instruments of change and to help move America from silence and inaction to discussion, engagement, and action on issues of difference and diversity. Integrating real life examples of difficult dialogues that incorporate the range of human emotions, Sue provides a masterful illustration of the complexities of dialogues about race in America. More importantly, he provides a toolkit for those who seek to undertake the courageous journey of understanding and facilitating difficult conversations about race." —Menah Pratt-Clarke, JD, PhD, Associate Provost for Diversity, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Health care needs assessment provides information to plan, negotiate and change services for the better, and to improve health in other ways. The first edition of this series established itself as a key source on health care needs for specific conditions supported by the Department of Health. Now in its second edition it provides vital updates taking into account how health care has moved on and how the structure of the UK's health service has changed. Each of the chapters follows the same structure; each analysing its topic, reviewing the incidence and prevalence, the range of services available, and the effectiveness of those services. It describes the central role and aim of health care needs assessment in the NHS health care reforms and explains the 'epidemiological approach' to needs assessment and its effectiveness. Volume 1 includes diabetes mellitus, renal disease, stroke, lower respiratory disease, coronary heart disease, colorectal cancer, cancer of the lung, osteoarthritis affecting the hip and knee, cataract surgery and groin hernia. Volume 2 includes varicose veins and venous ulcers, benign prostatic hyperplasia, severe mental illness, Alzheimer's disease, alcohol misuse, drug misuse, learning disabilities, community child health services and contraception, induced abortion and fertility services. All health professionals, including policy makers and shapers and those assessing quality of service will find this book an essential resource.
This title considers a wide range of 20th and 21st century literary works that feature literary deceptions and false memories and in which the relationship between text and author is not what it seems. By exploring a variety of examples of false or embellished memoirs, purportedly autobiographical novels that are in fact thoroughly fictional, as well as bogus authorial personae, it discusses whether it is possible to judge veracity by means of textual clues alone. It also argues that literary deceptions and false memoirs have particular cultural value and significance.
This volume of the Human Molecular Genetics series covers such genotype-phenotype correlations as clinical and environmental aspects, gene structure, expression, and mutation. Also discussed are models of certain diseases and future prospects for treatment and prevention. This book provides the reader with a basic overview of the physical expression of genetic disease before discussing in detail the most recent research and therapeutic developments.
This new resource in the series provides vital perspectives across entire new disease and service areas not previously covered in other volumes. The books of the first and second series are well established as the key sources of data on needs assessment. Together, they describe the central role and aim of health care needs assessment in the National Health Service. The epidemiological approach to needs assessment is explained thoroughly, and is then applied to the effectiveness and availability of services. This definitive guide is ideal for all those involved in commissioning health care. It is invaluable for public health professionals, epidemiology and public health academics, and students of public health and epidemiology. Key reviews of the First Series: "An excellent balanced account...the definitive resource" - "Journal of the Association for Quality in Healthcare". "Excellent...it should be delved into deeply" - "Pharmaceutical Times". "This excellent work moves us closer to implementing a market in health care" - "British Medical Journal".
