Life in the West Country of England in the early 1800’s had its hardships and struggles. Sailing to America brought a final separation for brothers, sisters and friends. With their faith, love and kinship it made life worthwhile. In 1836 the Haine family purchased land in Bloomfi eld, Ohio. Their daughter Frances, at age twenty, could never imagine that her diary would be read, 150 years later. Her writing described country life in Ohio, her impending marriage, and the sorrow of the Civil War. Her home, Clover Hill, is still alive connecting the past to the present. Living in Ohio in the 1970’s and finding the old family Bible, was the start of my research. On the center pages of the Bible, I saw births and marriages listed, along with the name “William Dredge Hawkins, born the 7th of August, 1804” at Chesterblade Hill, Evercreech, Somersetshire, England, but where was this place called Somerset? Meeting cousins from around the world has been part of the fun and journey.

First published in 1997, this volume contributes to the debate on the ground-breaking Technical and Vocational Education Initiative (TVEI) introduced by Margaret Thatcher by exploring the implications of its equal opportunities policy. The scheme was announced in 1982, piloted in 1983, extended nationally in 1987 and ended in 1997. It responded to criticisms that the education system was failing to meet the needs of employers and committed to equal opportunities for boys and girls along with increasing access to technology at the genesis of the computing era. The TVEI represented the first major intervention by central Government in curriculum development in England and was organised on a local authority level. The author, Sue Heath, had experienced mixed messages for what students of each gender could expect to achieve and she remained fascinated by the implications of the TVEI for 1980s school curriculums. Based on research begun in 1989, the volume reassesses the significance of the TEVI as a landmark policy in education. The study of crime has focused primarily on why particular people commit crime or why specific communities have higher crime levels than others. Anger is an emotion that affects everyone regardless of culture, class, race, or gender—but at the same time, being angry always results from the circumstances in which people find themselves. In On Anger, Sue J. This guidebook presents the Dartmoor Way, a 175km (109 mile) walk around Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Walked in 10 day-long stages between 12.75 and 20.5km (8 and 12.75 miles) in length, this waymarked route skirts the edge of England's largest granite moorland, passing through towns including Ivybridge, Ashburton, Okehampton and Tavistock. Also included is the 2-day High Moor Link, which crosses the moor's higher ground. Cornish officers and crew sailed on the ships of the Falmouth Packet Service which took the mail to and from the Caribbean. Methodism was strong in Cornwall and Methodist missionaries and their wives came to the Caribbean to evangelise both the enslaved and the newly free. The most striking transfer of Cornish skills to the Caribbean was to be found in mining.
