Cleaning buildings is an industrial process which should be handled by specialists. Often, though, general building operatives (and even householders) have attempted cleaning without understanding many of the health, safety and environmental implications. A lack of formal training arrangements has meant that many cleaning operations have not been adequately planned, and equipment, techniques, chemicals and materials have not been correctly used. Consequently, the safety of operatives and the proper care and stewardship of the environment has been jeopardised. This Digest sets out to provide building owners, contractors, operatives, building designers And local authorities, with basic advice on three important issues relevant to building cleaning (especially matters relating to health and safety): legislation, procedures and good practice, and discharging waste to the environment.
When buildings become soiled and stained, owners, occupiers and managers must decide whether and how they should be cleaned.
