U.S Army captain and recruiting commander Kevin Callahan is stabbed to death, his body is found in a guardhouse at Hudson Technical University, a small private engineering school located in College Heights, a decayed community in New Yorks Hudson River Valley. A message left on Callahans shirt reads, No more lies. The news media and pro-military and anti-war activists believe the murder was committed in opposition to unethical army recruiting. Angered by the biased media coverage and bothered by the armys deference to the civilian investigators in the Orange County sheriffs office, Callahans uncle, Philadelphia area urban planner Jack Donnelly, wants to conduct his own investigation. He is not afraid to step on toes in College Heights, a community where town-gown relations have reached their worst. Fearing Donnellys investigation will further embarrass the university, but, desperately needing his help to save her school, Hudson Tech president Martina Tiernan asks him to become her special assistant for campus planning. While Jack believes that Tiernan is trying to buy his silence, he reluctantly comes aboard. He learns that the murder is the lynchpin to a larger scheme that could close Hudson Techs doors for good.

New Jersey native Greg Mandell, a rookie reporter for the Ocean Republic, accepts an assignment to cover the Parent's Alliance for Schools and Teachers (PAST) and the state's public hearings on sex education. Formed to stop sex education, PAST has influenced the election of three hundred like-minded candidates to school boards across the Garden State. While on assignment, Mandell falls for Andi Gilardi, a popular history teacher up for tenure at Mandell's alma mater, Averdell High School. PAST has accused Gilardi of manipulating her students to fight for sex education and has labeled her a "morally unacceptable" teacher who must be denied tenure. Mandell's respect and affection for Gilardi forces him to make a choice between his professional objectivity and his personal integrity. Based on true events, The Sex Ed Chronicles recounts a journalist's brave efforts to stand up for his beliefs in the emotionally charged arena of sex education in public schools.

Hildesheim is a mid-sized provincial town in northwest Germany. Ordinary Germans in Extraordinary Times is a carefully drawn account of how townspeople went about their lives and reacted to events during the Nazi era. Andrew Stuart Bergerson argues that ordinary Germans did in fact make Germany and Europe more fascist, more racist, and more modern during the 1930s, but they disguised their involvement behind a pre-existing veil of normalcy. Bergerson details a way of being, believing, and behaving by which "ordinary Germans" imagined their powerlessness and absence of responsibility even as they collaborated in the Nazi revolution. He builds his story on research that includes anecdotes of everyday life collected systematically from newspapers, literature, photography, personal documents, public records, and especially extensive interviews with a representative sample of residents born between 1900 and 1930. The book considers the actual customs and experiences of friendship and neighborliness in a German town before, during, and after the Third Reich. By analyzing the customs of conviviality in interwar Hildesheim, and the culture of normalcy these customs invoked, Bergerson aims to help us better understand how ordinary Germans transformed "neighbors" into "Jews" or "Aryans.
