The "Old Doctor", John Churchill Gordon, delightfully tells stories of growing up on a plantation in Virginia before the Civil War. His father was a farmer, a member of the Virginia Legislature, and a friend of Thomas Jefferson. Then came the Civil War. When Virginia seceded, the doctor was appointed assistant surgeon for the 38th Virginia Volunteers. After the Confederacy surrendered, his family suffered through the hardships of Reconstruction. They survived, and came through it with a home of their own in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. He and his beloved wife, Mary, had eight sons and two daughters. Edward Stuart Gordon wrote this book as if his grandfather, the "Old Doctor", was speaking. The author retells family stories of real-life people, places, and events in a way that preserves the richness, heritage, and hardships of the Civil War era from the perspective of a real southern Virginia family.

We need to state the obviousprayer is about asking. If we deny, dilute, or diminish that, the bones of our prayer lives will suffer from spiritual osteoporosis. It invites you into a comprehensive biblical study of asking and then encourages you to just do it. After all, it was Jesus who said, Ask and you will receive and then repeated the invitation no less than six times in his last conversation with his disciples. Arent last words important? The emerging consensus points towards a systemic failure involving not only the construction sector but also the entire system of regulation and compliance. Tracing the failings back over time and scrutinising the role played by previous generations of policymakers, Stuart Green ultimately argues that Grenfell was a disaster entirely foretold. The insightful and critical analysis of the industry contained within these pages is essential and timely reading for anyone who wants to understand how the construction sector arrived at where it is today, and with that knowledge, give further thought to where it might go next.
