In a society that aims above all to safeguard life, how might we reckon with ethical responsibility when we are complicit in sacrificial economies that produce and tolerate death as a necessity of life? Arguing that biopower can be fully exposed only through an analysis of those whom society has “let die,” Stuart J. Murray employs a series of transdisciplinary case studies to uncover the structural and rhetorical conditions through which biopower works. These case studies include the concept of “sacrifice” in the “war” against COVID-19, where emergent cultures of pandemic “resistance” are explored alongside suicide bombings and military suicides; the California mass hunger strikes of 2013; legal cases involving “preventable” and “untimely” childhood deaths, exposing the irreconcilable claims of anti-vaxxers and Indigenous peoples; and the videorecording of the death of a disabled Black man. Murray demonstrates that active resistance to biopower inevitably reproduces tropes of “making live” and “letting die.” His counter to this fact is a critical stance of disaffirmation, one in which death disrupts the politics of life itself. A philosophically nuanced critique of biopower, The Living from the Dead is a meditation on life, death, power, language, and control in the twenty-first century. It will appeal to students and scholars of rhetoric, philosophy, and critical theory.

What occurs where (and why) and why do some places harbor more species than others are basic questions for ecologists. Some species simply live in different places: fish live underwater, birds do not. Adaptations follow: most fish have gills; birds have lungs. "A fish out of water" is the expression for a person -- and an animal -- in the wrong place. But not all patterns are trivial. Travel along any gradient -- up a mountain, from forest into desert, from a north-facing slope to a south-facing slope, from low tide to high tide on a shoreline, from Arctic tundra to tropical rain forest -- and the species change. What explains the patterns of these distributions? Some patterns might be as random as a coin toss. But as with a coin toss, can ecologists differentiate associations caused by a multiplicity of complex, idiosyncratic factors from those structured by some unidentified, but simple mechanisms? Can simple mechanisms that structure communities be inferred from observations of which species associations naturally occur? This book is about the identification and interpretation of nature's large-scale patterns of species co-occurrence and what we can deduce from them about how nature works. It draws upon a critical debate between Jared Diamond and Dan Simberloff, one which resonates today as the dynamics of species occurrence are shifting rapidly in a changing global environment.

These papers deal with the various scientific and technical aspects, designs, and technology of refrigeration used in food, as well as advances in air-conditioning, and heat pumps. One paper discusses the refrigeration of meat, fruit, or vegetables, and the reaction rate of proteolysis in low temperatures. The paper points out that meat preservation by freezing is not economical below 60 degrees centigrade citing the reason that cathepsines are still catalytically active in lower temperatures. Other papers discuss the effects of freezing of beef, pork, turkey, chicken, sweet corn, spinach puree. As regards fruit and vegetable storage, the air needs to be purified to inhibit infections, retard fungal or bacterial growth, and dissipate ripening gases or foul odors. Another paper examines the reasons for doing away with floor insulation in refrigeration plants used in storing fresh meat during the summer and winter months. This collection is suitable for engineers in the area of refrigeration, and also for food technologists involved in food research and preservation.

The story moves from early colonial settlement in Florida, Quebec and the Bahamas and ends in the Highlands, where James’ new wife becomes involved in a adulterous liaison. James, who was then challenged to two duels, succumbed to ill health and moved back to his childhood home in New Abbey in southwest Scotland. A Scion of Heroes is an easy-to-read but fully referenced and researched adult biography that will be of interest not only to biography aficionados but also to local history enthusiasts and students of social and military history of the Georgian period of British history.
